SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County officials warn we may officially drop into the dreaded, most restrictive, purple tier next week due to the rising COVID-19 case rate.“This is not a rollback, this is a devastation,” said Jon Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop in the East Village. “The same metrics that work in smaller counties don’t necessarily work in larger counties.”Under the state’s purple tier, restaurants would have to close indoor dining and move outside. Right now, in the red tier, they’re allowed to operate inside at 25% capacity.“We’re on 10th Avenue, we don’t have any space to put any outdoor seating, we’re on a busy street,” said Weber, who got through the first shutdown with PPP money, which is now gone.“If we close, we may never open again,” he said. “The idea of laying off 50 employees right before the holidays is pretty hard.”Other restaurants able to operate outside worry rain and cold weather will keep customers from dining outdoors.“There’s going to be challenges with cold weather, some of this stuff is just out of our control,” said Cesar Vallin, the managing partner at Cloak & Petal. “If you stay open, now you’re opened illegally, now you open yourself up to lawsuits from staff, ABC can come in and take your liquor license.”Like Weber, Vallin also worries about layoffs when moving from the red to the purple tier.“It’s not a light switch, I have to lay everybody off properly and then bring people back on, and not everybody comes back,” said Vallin. “There’s no support from the government, they’re still asking us for employment taxes, they’re still asking us for sales taxes; It’s a major letdown.”Under the red tier, gyms and fitness centers can operate inside at 10% capacity.Scott Lutwak, the founder and CEO of FIT Athletic Club, said that capacity is already a difficulty at his five locations across the county.“We’re mortified at the concept of moving into that purple tier, which represents us at zero capacity, being closed 100 percent,” said Lutwak.“We’ve been conducting classes outside regardless of weather, but now it gets dark earlier,” he said. “In our facilities, we have millions of dollars’ worth of really extensive equipment that can’t be brought outside because as soon as you bring it outside with saltwater air, you can’t bring it back inside.”He said right now he does not plan on shutting down inside or moving equipment outside.“As long as I feel like I can provide a safe environment for my employees and safe environment for my members, which we have proven we’re able to do so, I think we have every intention on keeping our doors open until we’re forced to do otherwise.”Lutwak said he believes his centers are essential, and therefore should be able to remain open.“We’re providing rehabilitation services, we consider our facilities as essential, and we have sent some letters out to each of the mayors in the cities where we’re conducting business,” he said he has yet to hear back.Besides restaurants and fitness centers, houses of worship, movie theaters, museums, zoos, and aquariums would also have to end indoor operations.San Diego County will find out next week if we have officially moved back into the purple tier. 3240
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego business leaders reacted with alarm to President Trump's plan to slap tariffs on goods imported from Mexico.On June 10, the President plans to place a 5% tariff on items like avocados, tomatoes, cars and medical devices that come from south of the border. They would increase until reaching 25% on Oct 1. Trump says the tariffs would continue until Mexico addresses the issue of migrants at the border. The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce has come out strong against the tariffs. The Chamber says Mexico is San Diego's biggest trade partner, with a .5 billion manufacturing supply chain that's now at risk. Jerry Sanders, the chamber's CEO, says every manufacturing job in Tijuana leads to half a new job in San Diego. "If consumers cut back because of the price of goods, that means there will be fewer jobs and there will be less production on both sides of the border," he said. Some consumers already appear wary. Mancher Nasar, who lives in Rancho Bernardo, said he expects his grocery bill to rise as the tariffs kick in. "I'm concerned about middle class families," he said. "You're putting a 25% tariff but you're not getting 25% more in your paycheck."University of San Diego economist Alan Gin said tariffs are normally used for economic purposes, not political ones. "This is as far out as we've ever seen in the use of tariffs," Gin said. Gin said San Diegans will feel them, but that states like Texas and New Mexico will fare worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police are investigating how a teenager ended up unconscious near a Walgreens store in Chollas View after her mother reported the girl had been kidnapped.The 13-year-old girl's mother called police shortly after 4 p.m. Monday and said her daughter was supposed to be at a friend’s house, but she later learned her daughter somehow ended up with a man she didn’t know.It is unclear how the woman determined her daughter was with the man.About 20 minutes later, police found the teen unconscious but breathing in the 600 block of Euclid Avenue. She was taken to the hospital, but her condition is unknown.Police said they are looking for the man that was believed with the teen. He is described as Hispanic, in his early 20s, with long hair. He was wearing reading glasses, a white T-shirt and possibly a black baseball cap. 860
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Officers are patrolling the College Area, cracking down on noise and health order violations as San Diego teeters on the edge of the red tier for coronavirus restrictions.Friday eight cease and desist orders were issued to College Area houses. The reason being the residence "intends to hold large gatherings on Oct. 30, 2020, - Nov. 1, 2020, in blatant violation of the Order of the State Health Officer, the County Order of the Health Officer and Emergency Regulations, and CDPH's October 9, 2020 gathering guidance."Saturday on Dorothy Drive near Dorothy Way it was easy to hear music, excited yelling, and chatter from multiple homes. A steady stream of young people came and left various houses.Normally, Jean Hoeger says it gets pretty wild, but when she went out Friday, "it was pretty quiet you didn't see the hoards of kids walking on the street which is kinda common in the College Area."Hoeger is a representative of the College Area Public Safety Committee."There were parties but they all seemed to be inside small groups, loud noise was not really present so nothing you could call into the police department for a noise disturbance," Hoeger said. She said she was proud the students seem to be abiding by the rules, saying, "If they're partying inside their houses with their little group of friends that's fabulous!"Hoeger said huge parties are the most "disconcerting to us any time of the year because it's just disruptive to the whole neighborhood, when they leave most of them are drunk and unfortunately a lot of sexual assaults happen."Any San Diego State students found violating the university's Stay Home order, which lasts through Monday, Nov. 2 at 6 a.m., could face disciplinary action, up to expulsion.Since Aug. 24, SDSU has issued nearly 970 violations, according to a statement from the university."They should be afraid of the consequences of their actions, whether related to COVID or in regards to the San Diego Municipal Code with regard to noise," Hoeger said.Violating the cease and desist orders could result in a misdemeanor offense and a ,000 fine. 2135
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans will soon have four new restaurants for dining along the San Diego Bay, as Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined Port of San Diego officials and The Brigantine Inc. for the ribbon cutting ceremony Monday for Portside Pier. Portside Pier is an over-the-water dining complex that has been years in the making. It will have four restaurants -- Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel's Cocina, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Coffee & Gelato. The dining complex replaced Anthony's Fish Grotto, a staple for 52 years along the bay. The dining complex is now owned by The Brigantine Inc. The restaurants are opening amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The design of the restaurants have plenty of outdoor space to seat about 500 people, with all social distancing guidelines in place. The complex has capacity for about 1,000 people, once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Portside Pier is the first of several projects along the waterfront, to improve and update the embarcadero. The coffee and gelato bar are already open. The other restaurants officially open on July 28. 1090
