SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From big box stores to locally based companies, a number of businesses in San Diego County are significantly scaling up their workforces to meet the demand caused by the coronavirus.Walmart, the nation’s largest employer, plans to hire 150,000 associates by May, including 6,200 in California. The company has boosted pay and bonuses, raising e-commerce employee wages by an hour as online orders surge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fixes are coming to elevators in a 14-story high-rise in downtown San Diego where senior tenants have faced challenges performing everyday tasks. But not soon enough for many.Some residents of the 65 and older Tower Apartments community have missed important appointments and had difficulties running errands, like trips to the grocery store, because of elevator outages.Some residents told 10News it's a long-running issue.RELATED: Seniors left with one elevator in 14-floor?San Diego buildingThe building is undergoing renovations - which residents say they appreciate. But they say the upgrades don't make it ok to shut down one of the two elevators and leave them with an elevator that they describe as unreliable at best. "Everybody is extremely upset," resident Carol Clark said. "And the thing is we don't seem to be getting many answers."One neighbor in a wheelchair broke down in tears during our interview. "It's people's safety," he said. "Not just mine, but everybody else."Shortly after running the story on 10News, management with the apartment complex sent a letter telling residents one of the elevators under renovations should be running by the end of June. That’s what many San Diego County restaurant owners felt after hearing the county has suspended enforcement activities on restaurants, for now.A judge’s ruling Wednesday allowed two strip clubs to stay open, and in a surprising twist, extended to the restaurant industry, allowing for in-person dining.While the county sorts out what it will do next, some restaurants are taking the opportunity to reopen for in-person dining, even if it’s short-lived.“I was thrilled to hear the judge’s ruling,” said Julian Hakim, co-owner of The Taco Stand. “I wish there was, even now, a little more clarity. We know the county is not going to enforce, but we’re not sure if ABC who holds our alcohol licenses or others choose to keep enforcing.”Hakim is cautiously optimistic and will now offer minimal outdoor dining options at his locations in downtown San Diego, La Jolla, Encinitas, and North Park.“I’m still prepared for anything,” he said. “There really isn’t any evidence that sitting outside is contributing to the COVID cases; I think there’s evidence of people being inside, so I would agree with that, and I wouldn’t open inside just yet.”Mikko Sushi’s Escondido, Carlsbad, and Vista locations reopened for outdoor dining and indoor dining at 25% capacity Thursday.“We decided to open with all the safety guidelines that are mandated by the county and state we will follow that,” said Mikko Sushi co-owner Mia Davis. “We debated actually, should we really open or not, but after thinking through overnight, many of our employees need jobs, this is right before Christmas, and they need to put the food on the table, they need to pay their rent.”Davis said she had to furlough 70% of her employees after the latest restrictions on restaurants went into place, and they could only offer takeout.Both Davis Hakim said they have many safety precautions in place, and they’re following what happens next closely.“We take this COVID-19 seriously, and we know the cases are increasing, and we just want to follow the rules.” 2069

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Democrat Ammar-Campa Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa have emerged as the favorites to represent East County's 50th Congressional District, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. The 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll comes one week before the March primary, in which voters will head to the polls for the first time since Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of felony campaign fraud. The poll, of 552 likely voters, shows Campa-Najjar, the lone household Democrat, leading the field with 35 percent of the vote. Former Congressman Issa, a Republican, comes in second with 21 percent, with former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio at 15 percent. The poll had 12 percent undecided and State Sen. Brian Jones, a Republican, at 7 percent. 837
