DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland formally launched bilateral talks on a free trade agreement Friday.Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chinese Commerce Minister Cheng Deming said the agreement talks between China and Switzerland have attracted huge attention and interest from the countries' leadership and business communities.Cheng expected a successful conclusion of the FTA negotiations. Cheng said a free trade agreement would enhance mutual trust between the two sides and promote economic development and closer ties between China and Switzerland.Swiss Federal Councilor Johann Schneider-Ammann expressed similar aspirations for the agreement as did his Chinese counterpart."The free trade agreement would further enhance trade and investment relations on a mutually beneficial basis, but also create many new opportunities for close exchange and cooperation," Schneider-Ammann said.China and Switzerland have seen fast-growing bilateral trade and investments for decade. In the past 10 years, China's exports to Switzerland have grown by 18 percent while Switzerland registered an even stronger 25 percent surge in exports to China.Currently, China is the largest trading partner of Switzerland in Asia, while Switzerland ranks ninth among China's trading partners in Europe.The Chinese commerce minister is leading a delegation at Davos to attend the World Economic Forum, which started Wednesday.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft on Monday sued Barnes & Noble, claiming patent infringement by the largest book retailer in the United States.Microsoft said it filed legal actions on Monday in both the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington against Barnes & Noble, as well as Foxconn and Inventec, two manufacturers of Barnes & Noble's devices.According to Microsoft, the actions focus on the patent infringement by Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader and tablet, both of which run Google's Android operating system.The patents at issue cover a range of functionality embodied in Android devices that are essential to the user experience, including natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need, surfing the Web more quickly and interacting with documents and e-books, Microsoft said in a press release."The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft's patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights," Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, was quoted by the press release as saying.Writing in a separate company blog post, Gutierrez said that the latest actions bring to 25 the total number of Microsoft patents in litigation for infringement by Android smartphones, tablets and other devices.He noted that Microsoft has established a licensing program to address Android's ongoing infringement, and leading Android smartphone manufacturer HTC has taken a license under this program.Amazon.com also signed a patent license with Microsoft last year covering its Kindle e-reader, he added."Unfortunately, after more than a year of discussions, Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec have so far been unwilling to sign a license, and therefore, we have no other choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations," Gutierrez said in the blog post.

NEW YORK, March 9 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. stocks dropped on Wednesday, the two-year anniversary of the beginning of a bull market, as concerns of oil prices and Middle East unrest continued to weigh on investors' minds.U.S. crude oil price dipped on Wednesday as crude inventories rose more than expected, though Brent crude rose on fears caused by continued violence in Libya.Meanwhile, Rex Tillerson, the CEO of energy giant Exxon Mobil Corp., said on Wednesday that he didn't think the recent jump in oil prices was hurting the U.S. economy just yet, but it's getting close.The market was worrying that the surging oil prices would hurt global economic recovery. Adding to those concerns, the Portuguese government's two-year cost of borrowing hit the highest level since it joined the eurozone in a bond auction on Wednesday.Wednesday marked the two-year anniversary of the beginning of a bull market. On March 9, 2009, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 6,547 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index closed at 677. The Dow is back above 12,000 now and the S&P 500 index has almost doubled.Meanwhile, the wholesale report was slightly positive, but still failed to boost the market. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, the wholesale inventories climbed 1.1 percent in January. Sales at the wholesale level rose 3.4 percent, the largest gain since November 2009.Economists expected that as businesses kept expanding, demands for products would continue to grow. LOS ANGELES, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The California Department of Public Health on Friday announced a recall of hazelnuts which might be contaminated by E. coli bacteria.The department said it ordered the recall after seven people fell sick with E. coli bacteria from eating tainted hazelnuts.The seven illnesses include one in Michigan, three in Minnesota and three in Wisconsin, said Dr. Howard Backer, interim director of the department.The hazelnuts were distributed by DeFranco & Sons, a Los Angeles company, said the department.After being notified of the contamination, the company is voluntarily recalling the nuts, the department said.The hazelnuts affected by the recall were sold under the brand names Sunripe, George Packing, Firestone Farms and Northwest Hazelnut and were distributed nationwide from Nov. 2 to Dec. 22, according to the department.The 50-pound bags of hazelnuts and mixed nuts with hazelnuts may have been repacked or sold from bulk containers, the department said, adding people who had bought the hazelnuts should not eat them.Consumers should check with retailers to determine if their nuts are subject to the recall, and if they are, should discard them, the department added.People who develop symptoms after consuming hazelnuts should seek immediate medical attention, the department suggested.E. coli may cause symptoms that include bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps and dehydration. In extreme cases, patients can suffer potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which includes kidney failure.Young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to the risk.

BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) will vote on draft laws on vehicle and boat taxes at the end of its bimonthly sessions on Friday.The group is also expected to vote on protecting the nation's intangible cultural heritage and a draft amendment to the Criminal Law.The Chairperson's Council of the NPC Standing Committee adopted the decision at a Thursday meeting presided over by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo.The three drafts will undergo further deliberation and revision based upon the opinion of the members of the NPC Standing Committee before the laws are put to a vote.Under the draft law on vehicle and vessel taxes, there will be a reduction in taxes for vehicles with engines smaller than 2.0 liters, which accounts for 87 percent of China's cars. Vehicle owners would also be required to submit tax certificates in order to qualify for a road-worthiness certificate.
