SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A life-changing medical diagnosis forced a San Diego sailor to leave the military and start over. While devastating, he's now pursuing another career with help from his new best friend. "When I left the ship and went to MCRD I started getting really sick and thought it was the flu," said Hugo Reynoso.Instead, Reynoso was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was medically retired from the Navy. "It's kind of scary having a steady paycheck and then going to have to look for something else," said Reynoso.On several occasions, dangerously high blood sugar levels sent Reynoso to the hospital. A friend suggested he get a diabetic alert dog. "He has enough personality for the both of us! He's a special character," said Reynoso, referring to his service dog Sky.Sky can detect when Reynoso's blood sugar levels are too high or low, alerting him by tugging his shirt or howling. In one instance, Sky detected extremely low levels when Reynoso was sleeping, alerting him to get up. Sky was by Reynoso's side as he pursued a new career in the automotive field. Reynoso was commuting two hours to Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Rancho Cucamonga for a fast-track program. "I was commuting 167 miles, one way, I would have to wake up around 2:30 a.m., start my drive at 3," said Reynoso.Reynoso did this five times a week, running on just a few hours of sleep. Sky was there to ensure his blood sugar levels were steady. "Everyone told me when we were getting ready to graduate that they were going to miss me, but mostly they were going to miss him because he was their support too."While Reynoso's diagnosis took away his old dreams, he now has a partner to help achieve new ones. 1711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant destroyed by a fatal fire last October reopened just in time for the holiday crowds. Kojack's Greek American fusion restaurant has been a Mission Beach staple for more than three decades. But last October, a fire started near the roof of the building and destroyed the ice cream shop and Kojack's on the bottom floor, as well as the apartment rooms on the second floor. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said 36-year-old apartment tenant, Aaron Porter died in the fire. Since the tragedy, the building and restaurant owner, Mike Soltan says he has worked tirelessly to get back onto his feet to reopen on his favorite holiday. "I never miss the Fourth of July on this beach for 33 years. So we tried so hard to make it, and finally, we did it." Soltan said. Longtime customer, Steve Grebing said he could not miss the grand reopening. "He [Soltan] kept saying in two weeks, two weeks. He was getting there, but now he is back here, so it's great," Grebing said. While the building itself is rebuilt, the renovations for the second floor are on hold. So no apartment tenants are able to live upstairs. Soltan also owns the ice cream shop next to Kojack's. Both shops reopened on July 4. 1226

Thursday to talk about food insecurity among our nation’s military and veterans.San Diego County has the largest concentration of military and veterans in the world. The CEO of the company shared the group’s mission with lawmakers and how they can feed military families who don’t have enough to eat. Feeding San Diego works to serve thousands of people through food rescue. The organization gathers quality food that would typically go to waste. “Last year we rescued 24 million pounds of food that was going to leave the food system, and go to the waste system, from stores, farms, manufacturers and other sources,” says CEO Vince Hall. The hearing examined the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs programs that provide nutrition assistance to nearly 20 million veterans across the country. According to the San Diego County Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, 1.2 million residents are associated with the military. That’s 37 percent of the population. Feeding San Diego serves local veterans and military members through an initiative called “Feeding Heroes.” It reaches local families and veterans on or near base, in military housing, and public schools serving students of military families. Dana Henderson, with Feeding San Diego, says the high cost of living in the county is a big reason for food insecurity. “What they are receiving is just not enough to make ends meet.” She goes on to say, “People on a daily basis are having to make those tough decisions between a nutritious meal or paying other types of expenses.”Over 2.3 million meals were distributed to veteran and military families through Feeding San Diego last year. 1818

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken Allied Gardens homeowner is pleading for the return of a stolen trailer? which contained the belongings of her hospitalized mother.When Erin Rose went out to the driveway of her home on Delbarton Street Friday morning, she froze. "My heart just dropped into my stomach. I felt nauseous," said Rose.Missing from her driveway was her 5-ft x 8-ft trailer. Drag marks revealed how it left the home."You can see it extends all the way to the street ... and to the intersection," said Rose.Rose had locked up the trailer in two places. The only thing she found were the remnants of one of the locks."Just heartbreaking and sad," said Rose. The trailer contained all the belongings of her mother Gail, 74, a part-time San Diegan recently hospitalized in Wisconsin with a heart condition. Rose had been storing her mother's belongings since buying a home months ago."That's all my mom has left. Now she has nothing," said Rose.Inside the trailer: furniture, household items, and some jewelry, including family heirlooms. There was also a lifetime of photos. Most of them haven't been digitized. Rose waited a week to tell her mother, until she was strong enough to receive the news."She cried, she cried. She knew she couldn't get stressed out, couldn't get her heart rate up. Right now she's focusing on her health. Hasn't really hit her she's going to come back to nothing," said Rose.Rose is now hoping to change that by making a plea for tips."I just want when she comes back to be able to have her photos on her nightstand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A portion of City Hall in Downtown San Diego was evacuated after crews working in the building possibly disturbed asbestos.According to the city, construction crews working on the lobby possibly disturbed the asbestos around 2 p.m. Thursday. The city said in a memo that a contractor working on the sprinkler system accidentally dislodged a section of the ceiling, causing it to crash to the ground. "Immediate action was taken to isolate and contain the material,'' according to the memo. The substance hasn’t yet been confirmed as asbestos, but hundreds of people were forced to evacuate as a precaution. Crews plan to conduct air testing Thursday night with the expectation of reopening City Hall Friday morning. The City Clerk’s office remains open and is working out of a nearby location until Thursday evening so candidates running for office can meet their 5 p.m. deadline. 909
