HOUSTON, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- NASA Johnson Space Center on Tuesday formed a partnership with Texas's largest tech incubator and accelerator, the Houston Technology Center (HTC), to help reach its goals of increasing private and public collaboration.The strategic partnership is aimed at expanding HTC's mission of accelerating the growth of emerging technology companies in the Houston region to support NASA's goals of increasing private and public cooperation, the parties said in news release."We are excited to partner with NASA Johnson Space Center in an effort to foster entrepreneurial opportunities to the transitioning workforce in the Bay Area," said Walter Ulrich, CEO of Houston Technology Center."The combination of NASA's incredible technologies and HTC's powerful entrepreneurial resources presents the potential for immense economic development," he said.HTC is committed to growing a sustainable entrepreneurial network that will benefit the surrounding the space center for years to come including its future missions beyond low earth orbit. HTC will seed the future workforce through its close ties with the major universities and with science, technology, engineering, math programs and objectives, according to the news release.NASA and the Houston Technology Center began their partnership earlier this year when they originally formed plans to open an office to help former contractors near the Johnson Space Center.With the signing of the Space Act Agreement on Tuesday, the two sides move forward with retraining contractors and helping them get new jobs in the Houston area.An estimated 4,000 people are expected to lose their jobs when the space shuttle program is completed.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China (PBOC), China's central bank, announced Tuesday that it is banning local regions, institutions or individuals from setting up gold exchanges apart from the existing Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange.The country also bans the establishment of any gold trading platforms in other exchanges, a statement on the PBOC website said.The statement said the country has ordered a cease to the building of any new gold exchanges or trading platforms. Those which have opened for business must cease operations.The ban came amid bigger risks in gold trading after some local regions, institutions and individuals grew enthusiastic in setting up gold exchanges and trading platforms in recent years as gold prices soared, which led to a surge of illegal practices due to inadequate management, the statement said.It added the central bank will work with the Shanghai Gold Exchange and Shanghai Futures Exchange to boost the healthy development of the country's gold trading market.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday that China welcomes the EU's new measures for coping with the European sovereign debt crisis worked out at the recently-concluded EU summit."We hope relevant measures can help stabilize the market, boost confidence in the market, stop the crisis from worsening, promote employment and economic growth, and push forward European integration," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Weimin said at a routine press briefing.Last Friday at the summit in Brussels, EU leaders agreed on establishing a new "fiscal compact" based on inter-governmental treaties rather than the expected EU treaty changes. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- About one in 10 mobile phone subscribers in the United States is now using an Apple iPhone, said a new survey released on Friday.Latest survey results from research firm comScore showed that for the three-month period ending in October, Apple remained the No. 4 handset maker in the U.S. with its share of mobile subscribers rising to 10.8 percent from 9.5 percent in the previous three months.Among the top five mobile phone brands in the U.S. market, Apple is the only one that saw its market share increase in the quarter, according to the survey.Samsung was still the top handset manufacturer with 25.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG and Motorola taking the second and third place with 20.6 percent and 13.6 percent of share respectively.Research in Motion (RIM), maker of Blackberry, ranked No. 5 with a share of 6.6 percent.Except Apple, market shares of the other four brands remained unchanged or dropped from the previous quarter.Apple's gain in the quarter might be driven by the introduction of new model iPhone 4S which went on sale on Oct. 14, and the addition of Sprint as a carrier in the U.S. market, some analysts said.The survey by comScore, which involved more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, found that 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices by the end of October.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority said Tuesday that the country's northern regions will continue to have sunny weather for the coming 24 hours, while the south will see subdued rain and snow.Temperatures in most parts of the country are expected to rebound slightly, the National Meteorological Center said in a statement on its website.But the lowest temperatures in the areas south of the Yangtze River will remain around zero degree Celsius, the center said.Meanwhile, rain and snow will subdue in most parts of the southern regions over the next three days, although freezing rain is forecast to hit Guizhou and Hunan provinces, according to the statement.
