WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — An 8-year-old has gone above and beyond this holiday season.Aiden Foster didn’t give up until a West Palm Beach woman found her cat which ran away weeks ago.The past 10 years Ashley Goldstein and her furry friend, Tobin, have been inseparable. But just days after they settled into a new home, Tobin disappeared.“I was desperate to find him. I put flyers up,”Goldstein said. She searched for several days which then turned into weeks, still no sign of Tobin.“Honestly I thought I was never going to see him again. I kinda gave up,” she said.At that moment, a glimmer of hope.Ashley received a phone call with the news that she’d been desperately waiting for.“It’s this little boy telling me that he thinks he saw my cat,” she explained. It was Foster, the neighborhood pet detective, who promised to help.“I saw him in the backyard he ran over the fence,” Foster said.Aiden kept his word and went above and beyond, using a little creativity in the process.“So I tried to go after him and I just couldn’t so I just put my cat food that was there, I put a trail all the way down there left a whole big pile over there ,” Foster said.60 days after his disappearance, Ashley received her Christmas miracle. She found Tobin less than a mile away from home where Aiden last saw him.“He not only made my Christmas, my holiday, but he brought my family back together,” She said.Ashley rewarded Aiden with 0.She also gave him an extra 0 that she raised for him through a fundraising site. This story originally reported by Kamrel Eppinger on WPTV.com. 1578

Watching your dog get old is hard. You see the pain in their eyes when they can't get into the car or run after the ball.Veterinarians across the U.S. say it's not just old age, but arthritis that's causing your dog pain, and a new drug trial is working to make your furry companion feel better. One of the clinics testing the new drug is Paradise Animal Hospital in Catonsville, Maryland. Dr. Cheryl Burke says she to qualify for the trial, dogs have to have obvious signs of arthritis and cannot have cancer. At the clinic, they conduct blood tests, x-rays and a physical exam.Hannah, a blonde chow mix, came in for the procedure."She has a lot of trouble getting up and when she goes to walk up and down the stairs, she stares, like can I do this? Can I do this? Breaks my heart when I see that," Hannah's mom, Donna Foster said.Foster found out from a friend this clinic was conducting the trial and thought she'd take a chance, "I mean she's fourteen years old and basically she's really healthy so if I can keep her for another 20 years, I know that's not realistic but I will and I want her to have a quality of life."The trial was created in San Diego, by Animal Cell Therapies, and uses canine stem cells to grow cartilage in the joint, so the dog has more cushion when he/she walks or runs."Stem cells are the body's primitive precursor cells and we all have them, and when we're born, there's a huge population of them in our umbilical cord," Dr. Burke said. The stem cells adapt to the needs around them, so they could turn cancerous, something Dr. Burke and pet parents don't want. That's why dogs go through several tests (for free) before they can qualify. The clinic is doing the entire trial for free, to get FDA approval, so other pet parents can one day buy the drug.Part of the study requires that the test be double blind, meaning no one, even Dr. Burke can see which drug is given to the dog. Each dog undergoes the same procedure. Then pet parents come back for a one month, three month and six month check up to see how the dog is progressing. If the study is approved any dog who didn't get the drug will get it for free."If it's approved, it could be a few years, before it's on the market but it could be wonderful," Dr. Burke said. There is no ballpark figure as to how much the drug may cost, but dog lovers are hopeful it could help their furry friend have a longer, better life. 2431

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Thursday passed a 7 billion defense policy bill that would give the military a 2.6 percent pay hike, the largest in nine years. The bipartisan 351-66 vote sends the measure to the Senate, where a key panel completed a companion measure in a closed-door session on Wednesday. The annual measure sets policies and a budget outline for the Pentagon that are funded by a subsequent appropriations bill that typically follows its parameters fairly closely. The military got a major budget increase under the terms of a bipartisan pact passed earlier this year that the Pentagon's many allies in Washington promise will address shortfalls in military readiness such as pilot training, maintenance of equipment, and procurement of new weapons systems.Readiness issues contributed to a situation in which almost four times as many military service members died in training accidents as opposed to combat. Just this spring, aviation accidents have claimed 25 lives.House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, said that the measure puts a particular focus on pilot training and retention."The key focus of this bill is restoring readiness to ensure that when our men and women in uniform go out on mission, they have the best equipment, the best training and the best support our nation can provide," Thornberry said. The measure would block the use of operational military units or military equipment if President Donald Trump carries out plans for a massive military parade in Washington, D.C., if it would hamper military readiness. 1581

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is calling on the Republican leadership to work with Democrats to raise the dollar amount of the direct payments in the relief package after President Donald Trump threatened to sink the bill without the increase Tuesday night.Pelosi said in a letter to House Democrats on Wednesday that she will go to the floor and ask for unanimous consent to bring a standalone bill that would increase the individual payments from 0 to ,000, which Trump requested in a video released on Twitter. To do so requires the agreement of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the same would also need to be done in the Senate.“If the president truly wants to join us in ,000 payments, he should call upon Leader McCarthy to agree to our unanimous consent request,” wrote Pelosi. The House is scheduled to go in for a pro forma session Thursday. If McCarthy agrees to the unanimous consent request, Pelosi tweeted, “This can be done by noon on Christmas Eve.”Mr. President, sign the bill to keep government open! Urge McConnell and McCarthy to agree with the Democratic unanimous consent request for ,000 direct payments! This can be done by noon on Christmas Eve!— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) December 23, 2020 Throughout the long negotiations over the COVID-19 relief bill, Democrats advocated for higher amounts of direct payments, but Pelosi says the GOP would never go above 0 and some cases, they proposed 0.Trump’s request came as a surprise to Democrats, but they’re hoping to get the increase in funds approved as soon as possible. Along with the 0 billion in relief, the bill also includes government funding, which will need to be approved by Trump by Monday to avoid a shutdown.“The entire country knows that it is urgent for the president to sign this bill, both to provide the coronavirus relief and to keep government open,” said Pelosi. However, even if Trump does decide to veto the bill that was passed by both the House and Senate on Monday, the legislation was cleared by lopsided votes in both chambers, so Congress could override it. 2116
