Tour promoter Live Nation has announced its first-ever drive-in concerts series in the U.S. for July, months after the live music industry has been on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The entertainment company on Monday announced “Live from the Drive-In” — a set of nine shows to take place July 10-12 in three different cities. Brad Paisley will headline shows in all three cities, while fellow country artists Darius Rucker and Jon Pardi will also perform in Nashville at Nissan Stadium. Nelly will perform in Maryland Heights, near St. Louis.The 3-day concert series will take place at the Ruoff Music Center in Indiana and Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Missouri - both are outdoor concert venues - and in the parking lot of Nissan Stadium, where the Tennessee Titans play. Each location will have LED screens and speakers around the lot, according to Live Nation. Ticketing is per vehicle with up to four people inside, and includes access to a parking space and adjoining "tailgate" area. Three weeks into the 2019 racing season, both attendance and overall betting handle are down at Del Mar. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says attendance is down about 5 percent, and handle is down 14 percent compared to 2018. Thoroughbred Club CEO Joe Harper says the issues surrounding the 30 horse deaths at Santa Anita have turned off some fans. "We've got to prove to our racing fans that we're doing the safest things we can to keep these horses healthy," he said. So far, three horses have died at Del Mar this season, all during training (two died in a freak accident when they collided head on before the second day of racing). Harper says the track has increased safety protocols that have been helping keep horses safe. "There's vets out there every morning keeping an eye on," he said. "They see a horse that maybe doesn't look that good, isn't warming up enough to where he'd be safe, we get him off the racetrack."Harper says the attendance and betting handle are on track with estimates. He says he hopes to see them both go back up over time. Through three weeks - 15 days of racing - the track is averaging about 13,089 fans per day. 1156

But exactly when students in some districts will go to class remains a mystery.Teacher strikes in two districts have already forced the cancellation of classes on their first day of school Tuesday.Evergreen Public Schools are closed because no deal has been reached between the school district and the Evergreen Education Association over salaries.Negotiations are ongoing, and the school district said it will give parents at least 24 hours' notice before classes will begin.The Washougal School District also missed its first day of school Tuesday due to a strike by the Washougal Association of Educators.School district representatives met with union members and mediators Monday to try to reach an agreement on teacher salary increases."The district and the association have worked hard to reach an understanding but, unfortunately, we were not able to come to an agreement," district Superintendent Mary Templeton said.Four other state school districts, which are scheduled to start classes Wednesday, could have those plans derailed by strikes over salaries and benefits.Vancouver Public Schools, Longview Public Schools, Battle Ground Public Schools and the Hockinson School District all announced that negotiations are continuing with teachers and mediators.The Hockinson School District said it's hoping to start classes on time but is asking parents to have backup plans for their children, just in case. 1515

They’re a lifeline to the local economy.“That’s crazy because, I mean, it’s our history,” said Pedro Bonilla, owner of El Buen Taco.Bonilla says these trees attract tourists and with Big Basin park closed for at least a year due to fire damage, his taco truck could have to close.“We weren’t prepared mentally or financially prepared for this,” he said.Thousands of acres have burned at Big Basin since fires sparked a few weeks ago, torching everything from the ancient trees to historic structures that were built in the early 1900s.“It’s hard to grasp you know how much damage the fire did to the infrastructure, said Mark McKenna of California State Parks.While McKenna says redwood trees are resilient, their recovery could take years.“The complexity of the rebuilding process, it's daunting when you see the damage that happened up there,” he said.That damage is both extensive and expensive. And though the total cost has not been tallied, people there say you can’t put a price tag on the park.“It’s like losing a loved one,” Bonilla said.While locals can’t replace the history that was lost during these wildfires, they’re still somehow optimistic about the future.“Just when it looked like the darkest time possible for the San Lorenzo Valley, we’re still standing here,” said local radio DJ, Sam Peacock.They're standing tall after flames burned the trees to the ground, because eventually, new life will sprout up even after this disaster.“It just shows that don’t underestimate Mother Nature,” Bonilla said. 1823

TORONTO (AP) — The United States has agreed with Canada and Mexico to extend their agreement to keep their border closed to non-essential travel to July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday's agreement extends the closure by another 30 days. "This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” the prime minister said in his daily press conference. Americans who are returning to the U.S. and Canadians who are returning to Canada are exempted from the border closure.Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf issued a statement Tuesday on why extending non-essential travel restrictions with Canada and Mexico was necessary. "The Department of Homeland Security will ensure that the measures taken at our borders will protect America from all threats, including threats against the health and safety of our citizens," Wolf said in the statement. "Based on the success of the existing restrictions and the emergence of additional global COVID-19 hotspots, the Department will continue to limit non-essential travel at our land ports of entry with Canada and Mexico. This extension protects Americans while keeping essential trade and travel flowing as we reopen the American economy. The Department of Homeland Security is in close contact with our Canadian and Mexican counterparts regarding this extension, and they agree on the need to extend their non-essential travel restrictions as well.
