NASA says asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, about 6.5 feet, and “poses no threat to Earth!”According to NASA, the asteroid has a .41% chance of entering our planet’s atmosphere and even if it did, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size.The asteroid was discovered in 2018 by astronomers in California who are on the lookout for dangerous space rocks and other cosmic surprises, The New York Times reports.Asteroid 2018VP1 seems to be making headlines because of its proximity to the contentious U.S. election, but another small asteroid buzzed by Earth just this month and it came closer to the planet than any other on record, according to NASA.The SUV-sized space rock passed 1,830 miles above the southern Indian Ocean on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 12:08 a.m. ET.Since 2005, NASA has been assigned by Congress to find 90% of the near-Earth asteroid that are about 460 feet or larger in size.“These larger asteroids pose a much greater threat if they were to impact, and they can be detected much farther away from Earth, because their rate of motion across the sky is typically much smaller at that distance,” wrote NASA. 1333

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Environmental regulators announced Monday that they will ease emissions standards for cars and trucks, according to the Associated Press.Current regulations from the EPA require vehicles by 2025 to get 36 miles per gallon in real-world driving. Regulators said the reason for the change is that the timeline put in place by the Obama administration wasn’t appropriate and set standards too high.The announcement will affect vehicles for model years 2022 through 2025.The changes could set up a legal battle with California, which has the power to set its own pollution and gas mileage standards.Other states also follow rules set by California and together account for more than a third of the vehicles sold in the U.S. Currently state and federal standards are the same.EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said in a statement Monday that the agency will work with California to finalize new standards.The agency said Monday that regulations set under the Obama administration, "presents challenges for auto manufacturers due to feasibility and practicability, raises potential concerns related to automobile safety, and results in significant additional costs on consumers, especially low-income consumers."Automakers praised the decision, saying current requirements would have cost them billions, raising vehicle prices."This was the right decision, and we support the Administration for pursuing a data-driven effort and a single national program as it works to finalize future standards," said Gloria Bergquist, vice president, communications and public affairs for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, in a statement. "We appreciate that the Administration is working to find a way to both increase fuel economy standards and keep new vehicles affordable to more Americans."Meanwhile, environmentalists warned the rollbacks will make U.S. cars more expensive to fill up, a growing concern in California."No one in America is eager to buy a car that gets worse gas mileage and spews more pollution from its tailpipe," said Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund. WASHINGTON (AP) — Winter hit U.S. honeybees hard with the highest loss rate yet, an annual survey of beekeepers showed.The annual nationwide survey by the Bee Informed Partnership found 37.7% of honeybee colonies died this past winter, nearly 9 percentage points higher than the average winter loss.The survey of nearly 4,700 beekeepers managing more than 300,000 colonies goes back 13 years and is conducted by bee experts at the University of Maryland, Auburn University and several other colleges.Beekeepers had been seeing fewer winter colony losses in recent years until now, said Maryland's Dennis vanEngelsdorp, president of the bee partnership and co-author of Wednesday's survey."The fact that we suddenly had the worst winter we've had ... is troubling," vanEngelsdorp said.Some bees usually die over winter, but until the past couple decades, when a combination of problems struck colonies, losses rarely exceeded 10%, he said.Bees pollinate billion worth of U.S. food crops. One-third of the human diet comes from pollinators, including native wild bees and other animals, many of which are also in trouble, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture."We should be concerned on multiple levels," said University of California, Berkeley, agricultural social scientist Jennie Durant, who has a separate study this week on loss of food supply for bees.Year-to-year bee colony losses, which include calculations for summer, were 40.7%, higher than normal, but not a record high, the survey found."The beekeepers are working harder than ever to manage colonies but we still lose 40-50% each year... unacceptable," Swiss bee expert Jeff Pettis, who wasn't part of the survey, said in an email.For more than a decade, bees have been in trouble with scientists blaming mites, diseases, pesticides and loss of food.This past winter's steep drop seems heavily connected to the mites, vanEngelsdorp said. Beekeepers report that chemicals that kill mites don't seem to be working quite as well and mite infestation is worsening, he said. Those mites feed on the bees' fats and that's where the insects store protein and center their immune response.Durant's study in this week's journal Land Use Policy found that changes in food supply in the Midwest's Prairie Pothole Region, a hot spot for honeybee colonies, has been a major factor in losses. That area has lost wetland areas with clover bees feed on.Other areas have been converted to corn and soy crops, which don't feed bees, she said.As bad as the survey numbers are, vanEngelsdorp said, "We're not really worried about honeybees going extinct... Weeks of nationwide protests against police brutality have placed a microscope on past instances of police use of force across the country — especially in the case of Elijah McClain.McClain, 23, died shortly after the Aurora (Colorado) Police Department arrested him on Aug. 24, 2019. An autopsy report says he suffered a heart attack on the way to the hospital after an officer placed him a chokehold, which has since been banned by the department.As of June 25, more than 2 million people have signed a Change.org petition calling for justice for McClain.What happenedAccording to Scripps station KMGH in Denver, McClain was walking home on Aug. 24 after purchasing iced tea at a convenience store.He was wearing a ski mask at the time. According to McClain's family, the 23-year-old was anemic and got cold easily.As McClain walked home, a bystander called 911 to report "a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms." Police tracked McClain down. Shortly after, police say he began "resisting." Body camera footage shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him.Police later told The Denver Post that "there were no allegations that McClain had done anything criminal."As police struggled to detain McClain, an officer placed him in a "carotid hold" — a maneuver designed to limit blood flow to the brain. When McClain became unresponsive, paramedics administered a shot of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state." Police insist that paramedics were the ones who chose to administer ketamine. Paramedics say the procedure is common in the area.McClain later suffered a heart attack and died six days later.AutopsyOn Nov. 10, a coroner released an autopsy report that listed McClain's death as "undetermined" — meaning they could not determine if McCain's death was an accident, a homicide or of natural causes.The report references multiple abrasions on McClains face, back and legs, and also references some hemorrhaging around his neck.Though the report notes that the levels of ketamine in McClain's body were at a "therapeutic level," examiners could not rule out that he had an unexpected reaction to the drug.The coroner ultimately determined that it was most likely McClain's "psychical exertion" that led to his death but stopped short of saying he died of natural causes.InvestigationShortly after the arrest, the officers involved in McClain's arrest were placed on leave. They've since been reinstated.On Nov. 23, the Aurora Police Department announced that the officers would not face charges."There is no evidence that any of the officers sought to cause injury or death to Mr. McClain," a letter from the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office read. The letter went on to say that the officers' use of force was appropriate given the circumstances.At a press conference, Aurora Police released police body camera footage from the arrest, which shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him. Video also shows McClain vomiting and telling him that he couldn't breathe.On June 5, the Aurora Police Department banned the use of the chokehold officers used during McClain's arrest.McClain's family has called for an independent investigation into the arrest for months. But it wasn't until June — about 10 months after McClain's death — that steps were taken to put an investigator in place.But less than 24 hours after Aurora City Manager Jim Twombly announced that Connecticut-based attorney Eric Daigle would lead the third-party investigation into McClain's death, the city severed its contract with Daigle. City Council members had raised concerns about Daigle's neutrality because, according to his website, Daigle's work includes "defending municipalities, police chiefs, and individual officers from law enforcement liability claims."City officials are still working through steps to conduct a third-party investigation into McClain's death. 4016

  

WASHINTON, D.C. -- Senate Democrats are unveiling a plan to extend additional unemployment benefits.This is for the extra 0 every week, on top of what states already offer for unemployment.The new proposal would decrease the added benefit as the unemployment rate drops.The Economic Policy Institute supports that plan, saying the additional benefit should stay in place as long as needed.“People are really, really uncertain about how this is going to unfold over the coming months, so putting some arbitrary end date on any provisions related to supporting the economy and the people in it during this crisis makes no sense,” said Heidi Shierholz, Senior Economist and Director of Policy at the Economic Policy Institute.The institute tells us the expansion makes a huge difference, not just for the individual, but for all of us. It estimates if it cuts off at the end of July, that could cost the U.S. 5 million jobs over the next year. That's because less spending creates a further drag on the economy.However, Republicans say the expanded benefit gives people a reason to not go back to work.Some studies have found the economy could actually be worse off if people don't get working again.The American Enterprise Institute agrees, saying the move was just meant to get through the initial lockdown.“This is becoming less of a, the pandemic caused us to initiate lockdowns and people are at home, and now it's just we have a large number of unemployed people, what should we do to assist them, and 0 addition to unemployment checks in a bad economy is a really unprecedented step,” said Matt Weidinger with the American Enterprise Institute.The group says extending the benefits could set that precedent for Congress to act similarly for any future recessions. 1781
