ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Escondido Union High School District is celebrating a grant renewal of over million to go towards helping students.The ASSETs grant comes from the federal government and helps funds after-school programs and other support services for students and parents.The district has received this funding for the past 10 years and schools have put it to good use.San Pasqual High School has created unique clubs like ukulele, welding, robotics, and mountain biking. The money also funds academic tutoring as well as programs like Drivers Ed.Everything created through the ASSETs grant money is free for students. "I can tell you it has literally transformed the experience for hundreds of students, hundreds," said San Pasqual High School Principal Martin Casas.Up until last week, next year's grant money wasn't a sure thing. Casas says the district worried the money would be cut from the federal budget.ASSETs grant schools like San Pasqual were trying to figure out which programs they'd have to cut if the funding didn't come through. Casas estimates they would have had to cut half of their programs.But now that the funding is secured, schools can look forward to creating even more programs.They'll receive 0,000 each year for the next five years.Some new programs in the works include building skateboards, music production, and mariachi.In addition to San Pasqual High, Orange Glen, Escondido and Valley High Schools will be getting ASSETs funding.The district says over 75 percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, so these programs are vital.  1618

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors in Encinitas are warning people about the dangers of the Sago Palm after two dogs on the same street passed away from sago poisoning.Ronnie Steinau says her dog, Luna, died within 24 hours of eating some seeds from a Sago Palm."She was the happiest, tail wagging, loved everyone and 'she's the kind of dog that everyone loved because she was so sweet," Steinau says. "We had her for about a year. We miss her."After posting about Luna on social media groups, Steinau learned a neighbor had a similar experience."We had no idea there was something so deadly all around us," says Alissa Dalaut.Dalaut says her dog Saber ate some sago palm seeds in December and died a few days afterward, despite aggressive treatment from her vet."We felt horrible, and we wished we would have known how toxic and how fatal and how dangerous these plants are," says Dalaut.According to PetMD.com, the sago palm contains a toxin called Cycasin. It can cause severe liver damage. Other symptoms of sago poisoning include:VomitingBlood in fecesBloody diarrheaIcterus (yellow coloration of skin and gums)Increased thirstIncreased urineBruisingBleeding easily (coagulopathy, DIC)Neurological signs such as depression, circling, paralysis, seizures, comaDeathThe toxin is found in the sago roots, seeds and leaves. Veterinarians say you should seek medical attention immediately if you suspect your pet has eaten it. Children can also get sick from eating it.Dalaut had 12 sago palms in her house. She has since had them all removed. Steinau also had a sago palm removed from her backyard and has plans to cut down another on her porch.Now the two women are warning others of the dangers in their neighborhood."If you have them in your yard and you have children or pets, you're asking for trouble," says Steinau.Steinau would also like nurseries to do a better job of telling people about the dangers associated with sago palms and other trees when they're sold. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 15 in Escondido was ejected from her car after crashing into a freeway zipper machine early Wednesday morning.At around 12:45 a.m., the California Highway Patrol received multiple calls about a car going southbound on northbound I-15 near Via Rancho Parkway.Moments later, the CHP was notified that the vehicle crashed head-on into a zipper barrier machine.CHP officials said the female driver was thrown from her car and landed about 30 feet from the wreckage. The woman’s Toyota was completely destroyed on impact.ABC 10News learned the woman was unconscious when she was rushed to the hospital. Her condition is unknown, but she reportedly suffered major injuries.No other passenger vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported. 828

(KGTV) -- Fire crews Tuesday battled a small brush fire that threatened a structure in Fallbrook.According to Cal Fire, the four-acre blaze, dubbed the Cathy Fire, started on Daily Road and Lynda Lane. Cal Fire later tweeted that the forward rate of spread had been stopped. ERLANGER, Ky. -- Police shot a suspect outside a bar in Erlanger, Kentucky on Wednesday night after the suspect pointed a gun at the officers, according to Kentucky State Police trooper Charles Loudermilk.Loudermilk said two officers from the Erlanger Police Department had been pursuing 40-year-old Dexter Helton, of Florence, over an active felony drug warrant and located him inside Peecox Bar and Grill at about 8 p.m. He fled on foot out the back door of the bar, drew a firearm and pointed it at the officers, at which point an officer shot him. "This action caused a life threatening situation for the officers involved and they were forced to discharge their firearms," Kentucky State Police said in a news release. Helton was airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with "critical injuries" after the incident. Neither of the Erlanger officers were shot or injured. Identities of the police officers involved have not yet been released. Investigators are reviewing footage from the officer's body cameras. Authorities also seized a witness's phone who had posted a video of the moments after the shooting on Facebook. Surveillance video from the bar will also be analyzed, Loudermilk said. Kentucky State Police will investigate the shooting, Loudermilk said.  1359
