SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan to add bike lanes along 30th Street in North Park got a boost of support Tuesday from a group of 18 businesses.“We see protected lanes on 30th Street as just the beginning of the transformation of our streets to truly support biking, walking, and transit as meaningful transportation choices,” read the letter, which was sent to Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Councilmember Chris Ward.It was signed by the owners of 18 local businesses located near 30th Street, including Modern Times Beer, Union Cowork, Waypoint Public and Bottlecraft.On Twitter, Modern Times Beer posted the letter, adding “Our world-class businesses deserve world-class streets. We urge the city to stand firm in its commitments to climate, safety, clean air, & thriving business corridors, & stick with Option A.” Here's an important thing we care a lot about: building more bike lanes. The city estimates 258 parking spaces would be lost in the first stretch from Howard to Upas St. Another 162 parking spaces would also be lost in the second stretch from Upas to Juniper Street.The removal of the parking spaces would make room for protected bike lanes on both sides of the street and would preserve center turn lanes.That option has divided the community, however, with opposition coming from other businesses, residents and the North Park Main Street organization.“Why not meet in the middle?” said Angela Landsberg, executive director of North Park Main Street.She has been pushing the Mayor’s office for a plan known as “Option B.” That plan would create separate bike lanes but maintain some of the parking by creating “floating” parking spaces between the bike lane and vehicle traffic lanes. 2054
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan that has the potential to triple Mission Valley's population by 2050 will be voted on by the San Diego City Council Tuesday.The city will vote on the final draft of the proposed Mission Valley Community Plan. It replaces the last plan that was written back in 1985. Supporters say it will help address the region's housing crisis. "One of the biggest problems we've had in the city is our community plans haven't been updated in decades. So, whenever developers come in and want to build housing they have to get conditional use permits and that takes sometimes over years to get accomplished, and that drives the cost of housing up," said councilman Scott Sherman whose district includes Mission Valley.Currently, Mission Valley is zoned mixed-use and residential. The new plan would rezone it to almost all mixed-use. Developers would be able to build up to 145 housing units per acre, instead of 73 units per acre. "Apartments and condos, density around mass transit, that's the whole idea, we need housing so let's make it more dense around transit oriented hubs, cause we have the trolley that runs right through Mission Valley," said Sherman. People who work in Mission Valley are worried that traffic will be a nightmare in an area already known for gridlock. "It's already congested as it is, so to build more, where?" asked Eni O'Donnell. "It depends on how well they plan integrating it all in, if you bring in 50,000 people overnight, then obviously, that's not going to work," said Archie Kordestani who lives in Civita. The plan includes several new bike and pedestrian bridges, connectors to help with traffic, and more transit stops along the trolley's green line. "Busing, biking, trolleys, I think these are the ways to go," said Kordestani.The project also includes 160 acres of park space and two schools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A homeless man walking through a church parking lot was viciously mauled by two stray pit bulls early Wednesday morning.The victim was discovered by a passerby at around 1 a.m. outside the New Creation Church located at 3115 Altadena Ave. in the Chollas Creek neighborhood, according to San Diego police.The unidentified victim told 10News that he was walking through the parking lot when he was suddenly attacked by two pit bulls.He says the pit bulls repeatedly bit him in the face, head, and entire body until the dog owner pulled them off. The owner of the dogs did not stay with the victim or check on his status, the victim told 10News.The dogs whereabouts are unknown.Police found a dog harness at the scene and have turned the investigation over to county animal control.The victim was transported to an area hospital with multiple lacerations. His condition is unknown at this time.Police are searching the neighborhood for the owner of the two pit bulls. No description of the dogs or the owner have been issued at this time. 1066
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego hairstylist is suing Governor Gavin Newsom over closures of indoor salons. It comes even after a revised order that allows them to operate outside.Amy Mullins-Boychack doesn’t take just any client.“They might have to pace for 15 minutes before they can regulate their anxiety to get a hair cut,” she said.She’s been cutting hair for children with special needs at her salon “THAIRapy” for eight years. Under restrictions from the state, salons are only allowed to operate outdoors.She says that’s not an option with her clients.“I have clients that don’t have impulse control,” said Mullins-Boychack. “They don’t have the ability to just sit anywhere and get a hair cut.”So she joined a lawsuit filed against the governor in March. The plaintiff, JD Bols, is a landlord to several churches and beauty salons in San Diego.The lawsuit also names Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Sheriff Bill Gore, and the County Board of Supervisors as defendants. It claims the pandemic-related restrictions violate civil rights and have financially crippled businesses deemed non-essential.“This isn’t about vanity," says Mullins-Boychack. “This is a life skill for them, this is routine, this is repetition, this is part of their livelihood, part of their social skills.”In addition to the lawsuit, she’s working to get an exemption from the governor to continue her business indoors. 1398
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A pillar in San Diego's art community says it's being forced out of the neighborhood by high rent.La Bodega Gallery and Studios announced Tuesday it's closing its doors after six years following failed lease negotiations.
