SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers arrested a driver who knocked over a light pole on Interstate 5, causing it to fall into the path of oncoming traffic Friday night.It happened on the northbound lanes of I-5 just before the State Route 163 connector.The driver of a white Chevy Impala went off the road crashed into two light poles, knocking one of the light poles onto the right lane and into oncoming traffic.CHP says at least seven cars smashed into the downed light pole, damaging the vehicles. However, there were no injuries.The driver of the Impala told CHP he merely fell asleep behind the wheel, but after a sobriety test, he was arrested.“He was arrested for DUI,” said Steve Jio, with the CHP. “Possibly drugs, and we’re taking him to our station to be evaluated."Three lanes of I-5 were closed off for about an hour as crews removed the damaged vehicles and the downed light pole.Crews plan to replace the light pole Saturday morning. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Barrio Logan businesses are moving outdoors on Saturday in hopes of bringing in some revenue. The businesses are hosting the first Walk the Block, which will include outdoor dining, live music and shopping. The business were struggling because of pandemic closures and they tell ABC 10News that they decided to get permits to be able to serve and sell to customers outdoors. All social distancing and mask rules will apply. Walk the Block will go on from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Chicano Park to 26th Street. 536

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members rallied Thursday to send a message to developers looking to build in Barrio Logan. This comes after a developer tried to bring an 80-room hotel to the area, but neighbors opposed it.Neighbors are worried the developers coming in would change the culture of the community. "I don't feel good at all. I think in the past, Barrio Logan has been assaulted and insulted," said resident David Heaney. "I'm afraid that they're going to go against the plan again, and there will be some kind of shenanigans where there the City Council will say it's done."Heaney has been living in his Barrio Logan home since 1998. It sits directly across from the proposed development site on Newton Avenue. RELATED: Gallery says gentrification is forcing them out of Barrio LoganProtestors gathered Thursday morning in opposition to the project and future developers who may want to come in. Last summer, a developer wanted to put a hotel at the location, but due to opposition from the community, it will now be a mixed-use space. Community members say there is simply no room for a project like a hotel or other large businesses because of the lack of parking in the area. Neighbors must have parking permits to park in the area. 10News reached out to developer Douglas W. Hamm, who initially proposed putting a hotel in the space. He sent a statement that read, in part: "I conveyed that I have zero interest in trying to build a project in their neighborhood that the community is not supportive of, much less opposes.
