SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — You've likely seen the bar nestled next to Interstate 5 on India St., just across from the San Diego International Airport.Its plane-shaped sign pointed toward the heavens, glowing neon red as the sun sets on the city.The Aero Club has sat near the airport since 1947, serving residents of the Mission Hills area, factory employees who worked near the airfield, and service members passing through town or deployed to San Diego.MORE places to explore in San DiegoSince it was opened by Mariam Profit in 1947, originally as a place for employees working at the nearby aircraft factory, the bar has been a spot for the everyday worker.It's that colorful past that has added to the bar's history decade after decade, according to bar owner Bill Lutzius."Over the years, different groups come and go. For a long time we had the Coast Guard helicopter pilots coming in all the time," Lutzius recalled. "In the 70s, it was like a cop bar, they called it. I know it was like a biker bar for a while."Lutzius ran through the times of the day when certain clientele roll through: The neighbors first, those heading home from work second, people out for dinner next, the late-night crowd after, then finally the late-night workers just getting off a shift.Behind him, photos of past guests: Locals, military pilots, sailors, an array of aircraft nose art.He recalls the former Aero Club owners as well. One owner used to leave the keys for guests to lock up at the end of the night. Another owner was actually a group of Greyhound bus drivers."A lot of characters came and went ... A bar is an awesome place for the neighborhood because it's sort of a meeting place," Lutzius said. "Everybody catches up on what's going on."While not an owner, Lutzius said one frequent guest used to be a dog. The bar's then-owner would give it a free beer.Today, the bar continues to serve an eclectic crowd, boasting 1,200 different types of whiskey. The wall behind the bar is clad in bottles glistening against a ceiling covered with strings of lights.While the whiskey sign outside the bar reads 900, rest assured there's much more. Lutzius says it just became too much to continue updating it.But how did they all get there? That's on Lutzius."I guess I'm just an obsessive person. It may not even be logical, you know, to do it. But just because of my personality we'd just buy anything we can buy," Lutzius said. "We ended up with about 1,200 whiskeys ... There's lots of good stuff."I just had a vision of a wall of liquor, and that's what we started with ... it just evolved into being whiskey," he added. 2656

San Diego (KGTV)- After receiving a failing grade by the American Lung Association, the County of San Diego is rolling out some new tools to fight air pollution. In port-side communities like Sherman Heights, Logan Heights and Barrio Logan, the rates for Asthma are the highest in the state. This morning county leaders unveiled its new innovative monitors and cars. “This has never been done before,” says Aclima’s Chief Scientist, Melissa Lunden. For the past three months, two air quality cars have been driven around the county for 24 hours at a time collecting samples of air pollutants. “You get a map, a street by street map, of what the air pollution is and what the air pollutants are on those particular streets,” says Lunden. “That allows you to really locate in that region an area of concern.”Stationary monitors will also be set up in areas like Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights, and Logan Heights. Officials will be able to monitor what’s being inhaled by the people who live in these communities. “What we expect to happen is we’re going to find elevated levels of pollution at the street level that we didn’t see with our regional monitors,” says Assistant Director of the Air Pollution Control District, John Adams. With each monitor, the air is pulled into an inlet over 24 hours. The filter is then taken out and tested in a lab. The Air Pollution Control District has already placed monitors along Interstate 15 in Carmel Mountain and Interstate 5 in San Isidro. The FDA-approved sensor is easy to put on and can be worn for 10 days. "I feel like I have more control and diabetes has less control over me, which is the most freeing feeling in the world," said Keary, Zola's mom. Keary says Dexcom, a San Diego-based company, is not only simplifying their lives but also saving them, especially when their blood sugar levels get low. Keary can monitor both her and Zola's blood glucose levels on her smartphone, even if they're thousands of miles apart. The device will be readily available to consumers in June and is covered by most insurance companies.   1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two more people have died from the flu in San Diego County, bringing this season’s total to 11, according to County News Center. According to health officials, a 74-year-old man who was vaccinated died from complications from influenza B on December 31. A 64-year-old man also died from complications due to influenza A on January 3. The 64-year-old man hadn’t received his vaccination, according to the county. Overall, flu activity was down last week compared to previous weeks. Last year at this time, 91 people had died from the flu. Flu cases last week fell to 257 from 369 the previous week. Overall, just over 2,000 cases of the flu have been reported so far this season, which fell dramatically from more than 10,300 by this time last year. “It’s not too late in the season to get your flu shot,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Flu activity can last until April or May and the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others around you from influenza.”The CDC recommends that everyone 6-months-old and older get a flu shot every year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego police officers answered an unusual call to duty when an emergency struck, leaving two young children alone.SDPD officers Daniel Clark and Adrianni Vital have been a part of the department for about a year.Last Friday night, police received a call about a father in San Ysidro having a medical emergency, but he did not have any family or others to watch his two young daughters.After he was taken to the hospital, Clark and Vital stayed behind to watch the man’s 2-year-old and 4-year-old daughters.“Just to put a smile on their face, it meant a lot, it was a great interaction; it just made my day,” said Vital. “We just want to show people that we are human, too, and we do want to give back, and sometimes it comes in different shapes and sizes in how we do it."The officers did everything they could to keep the girls entertained so they would not worry about their dad.Using his own experience as a father, Clark learned more about the children’s likes and dislikes, and the officers eventually found out the girls loved the song “Baby Shark.”ABC 10News learned the girls’ father is doing OK and the family was reunited after about two hours. 1190
