JPMorgan Chase, which is the parent company of Chase Bank, announced this week plans to make it easier for those with criminal pasts to be considered for employment with the company. As part of JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, the company will no longer ask employees to reveal if they have a criminal past during the application process. The company said this initiative allows for those with criminal backgrounds to receive the same consideration as any other applicant, when their background has no bearing on job requirements.The company said that in 2018, the company hired 2,100 people with criminal backgrounds, which represented 10 percent of all new hires for the year. JPMorgan Chase said those hired generally had been charged with low level offenses such as disorderly conduct, personal drug possession and DUI. These applicants were hired for positions in entry-levels jobs such as transaction processing, and lending and account servicing.“Business has a responsibility to partner with policy, business and community leaders to create an economy that works for more people. When someone cannot get their foot in the door to compete for a job, it is bad for business and bad for communities that need access to economic opportunity,” said JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon in a statement. “Giving more people a second chance allows businesses to step-up and do their part to reduce recidivism, hire talented workers, and strengthen the economy.”The financial services company's decision to ban the box is part of a broader initiative to advocate for reforms to make it easier for those with criminal backgrounds to be part of the workforce. JPMorgan Chase said it will advocate for restoration of Pell Grants to those with criminal pasts, training for people with criminal backgrounds, and support reforms to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's (FDIC) hiring rules. "The FDIC believes that at a minimum, each insured institution should establish a screening process that provides the insured institution with information concerning any convictions or program entry pertaining to a job applicant. This process would include, for example, the completion of a written employment application that requires a listing of all convictions and program entries," the FDIC said in a statement in 2018.JPMorgan Chase's plan has earned the support of two U.S. governors: Utah Governor Gary Herbert and Delaware Governor John Carney. “In Delaware, we know it’s important to offer our neighbors a second chance, to allow Delawareans who have a criminal history to compete for a job and contribute to our success as a state,” said Delaware Governor John Carney. “That’s why we are excited about these initiatives from JPMorgan Chase – a major employer in Delaware. Leanne Carrasco ordered 95 pizzas. The high school senior and her friends filled up goody bags and awaited a celebratory crowd. But this was not your typical graduation party.Carrasco didn't want that. Instead, she gave back with a pizza party at a homeless shelter for women and children in Houston, Texas."Not a lot of people have the same options as me. It's not fair," she told CNN. "There are a lot of people who need help. So I give it."It took her a month to prepareCarrasco had volunteered before, with her family, at the Star of Hope Family Development Center. But this time was different.She enlisted a bunch of her friends and got to work.In the month leading up to the party they collected toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand wipes and deodorant. They packed them into 400 hygiene bags to hand out to residents of the shelter.On Sunday, it was party time. The pizza was a hit, and so were the bags.But Carrasco and her friends gave the residents something more than just food and soap."They (the teens) had respect for the these people. They saw them as peers," said Scott Arthur, a spokesman for Star of Hope. "The residents saw this as a validation that people do care."For the shelter residents, it was a magical dayIn all Carrasco and her friends served about 200 people."It was a very magical day," Arthur said. "It gives you a hope for the youth of today. They (the high schoolers) were able to think of other people."Residents of the shelter gave Carrasco a standing ovation and lined up to hug her, moved by her compassion."I told her this was her final exam, and she got an A plus," Arthur said.But the praise won't go to Carrasco's head anytime soon. The graduating senior plans to enroll this fall at Briar Cliff University and study nursing."I think you should always know you're lucky to have what you have," she said. Lawrence County, Indiana, prosecutors filed criminal charges Thursday against a Mitchell Community Schools nurse for stealing students' medication and ingesting it herself.Carol Sanders is charged with felony official misconduct, felony neglect of a dependent and five counts of misdemeanor theft.Police arrested Sanders Thursday and she was booked into the Lawrence County Jail.A staff member at Burris Elementary launched an investigation earlier this month after medication belonging to students went missing.Sanders admitted to stealing amphetamines, Ritalin, Zyrtec and other medications from students at Burris Elementary and Hatfield Elementary.The school nurse also admitted to replacing some of the students’ medications with baby aspirin.Sanders said she stole the medications between February 25 and March 7 of 2019, court records show.“Carol stated she stole the medication because she is an addict,” read the probable cause affidavit. “Carol admitted to needing help with her addiction.”Carol Sanders also admitted that this is not the first time she’s been terminated from a nursing job for stealing and ingesting medication.Sanders said she omitted that information to the school district during the hiring process.Superintendent Dr. Mike Wilcox said the district performed an expanded criminal history check and no prior history was reported.Wilcox provided the following statement. “The Mitchell Community School Family is deeply concerned about this event. This, or any other, issue that forces us to question the safety of any Mitchell student immediately becomes our top priority. Our outstanding school administrators and school resource officer responded firmly, fairly, and in a timely manner. The parents of our students effected by this event, who were contacted immediately and have shown remarkable support. Mrs. Sanders is no longer employed by Mitchell Community Schools. She has submitted her letter of resignation, The Mitchell team of students, families, community members, and educators will continue to analyze current practices and collaborate on best solutions in regard to all Mitchell students."Sanders is scheduled for an initial hearing in Lawrence County on March 25. Jeff Marquise is taking small steps in distance, but he's making huge strides for science.Eight years ago, Marquise was paralyzed from a mountain biking accident.“It was a gap jump and I sort of just rolled over it and went over the handlebars on the other side of the jump and came down right on my head,” he recalls. “I sustained a C5 and C6 burst fracture.” Those injuries left Marquise unable to walk. Now, with the help of new technology and old-school physical training, he is leaving his wheelchair and walking again. “No one thought I could stand up on my own or step on my own,” he says. “So, being able to do it with the implant has brought some hope back to the equation.” The implant is an epidural stimulator that’s embedded near the spinal cord. Electricity then triggers the nervous system which can help restore brain-to-spine connectivity. Researchers at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville are calling this a scientific breakthrough.“It gives us hope that we know now that the spinal cord has this capability,” says Claudia Angeli, Ph.D., of the University of Louisville. “So, it’s a matter of being able to tap into that.”While Angeli is not calling this a quick fix for paralysis, she is finding excellent results.“You can actually see that activation of the muscles,” she says. “It’s the spinal cord responding to information. So, the more activity the more responsive or the more excitable the spinal cord is.”That excitement can be felt across the country.A recent study by the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation discovered that there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis in the United States.That breaks down to about 5.4 million people, or the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.“It is life changing,” Marquise says. “But I’m always careful not to oversell it. It’s not walking around the house doing chores.”While being brutally honest, Marquise says he’s also very happy to get back on his feet again. “When you first get hurt, a lot of people are told that they are not going to be able to walk again,” he says. “So, being able to do it in this setting has brought a ray a hope for me and other people.” 2235
