The RV industry, like every other sector of the travel industry, took a hit in business at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.“April was down about 30 to 35%,” said Jim Bracking.Bracking is the manager of the Loveland RV Resort in Colorado.“For every reservation we were gettingm we were getting a couple of cancellations,” Bracking added. However, about a month after a slew of cancellations came in, things have started to pick up significantly.“Reservations are up quite a bit,” said Bracking. “If you have been in the office, you could see the reservation clerks are very busy.”Vacationers started rebooking road trips as soon as Colorado and other states started to reopen.“You just got to get some form of normalcy back and yet be safe. This is one of the only ways we know how to do it,” said Suzie Limppo, who is vacationing in an RV at Loveland RV Resort.RV resorts, RV parks, and RV rentals are seeing a bounce back across the country.“We are now up over 1,000 percent from where we were in April,” said Jon Gray with RVshare.RVshare rents RV to vacationers and it’s just one RV rental company that has seen dramatic increases in rentals.“There is a premium on keeping your distance. There’s a premium on driving to where you want to go instead of flying, because people are afraid to get on airplanes right now,” said Gray. “So, we thought those things benefitted our business, but we didn’t realize it benefitted it as much as it has. It has been truly amazing.”The RV industry is one of the only sectors of travel and leisure seeing such a strong rebound, and until the threat of COVID-19 is behind us, industry experts expect continued high demand.“It is clear that this summer is a moment for the RV industry, for drive-to travel and for people kind of experiencing travel in a different way,” said Gray.Because of high demand, RV rental companies and resorts warn those interested in taking road trips and camping should book soon.“If somebody want to go camping, they should book their reservations now,” said Bracking. “For this year and even next year, because they are filing up and I suspect by July 4 they are going to be very full.” 2165

The trade war between the United States, China and many other countries is continuing to escalate. The Trump administration is now working toward imposing tariffs on another 0 billion worth of imports from China. The countries are imposing tariffs on each other, and there's no sign of any of this letting up. President Trump says he's working to level the playing field, reduce U.S. trade deficits and protect American technology. The U.S. is now targeting thousands of products, including aluminum, steel, and smaller ones that make microwaves and flashlights.Meanwhile, San Diego companies and consumers are caught in the middle."Really, before it even hit, when there was just talk of it in the industry, all that uncertainty really made people nervous," said Paul Cleary, executive director of the nonprofit GRID Alternatives, which installs solar panels on low-income homes. The organization buys its panels on the open market, and many of them are imported. Cleary said the Trump Administration's 30 percent tariff on the panels, and the reaction on the market, has added about a ,000 to the cost of each install. That's meant some layoffs and canceling raises.  1189

The video streaming service Netflix has been indicted by a grand jury in Texas over the film “Cuties,” alleging the company used “lewd” images."Cuties" is a French film that follows the story of an 11-year-old Senegalese immigrant in France who rebels against her family's Muslim traditions and joins a free-spirited dance crew. The film, directed by Ma?mouna Doucouré and originally called “Mignonnes”, won a directing award at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.A Tyler County, Texas grand jury moved to return an indictment against Netflix last month, according to multiple media reports. The complaint alleges Netflix knowingly promoted visual material which “depicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or public area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age at the time the visual material was created, which appeals to the prurient interest in sex, and has no serious, literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.”In response, Netflix stated “‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” according to a statement in Deadline. “This charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”Netflix was reportedly served a summons October 1.Earlier this summer Netflix was forced to apologize for what they called “inappropriate art work” used to promote the movie on their service. The main image Netflix originally used shows the four lead actresses, all girls, wearing black and turquoise dance outfits revealing their stomachs and most of their legs, while posed mid-dance.The images used in France for the film show the girls walking down the street holding shopping bags. The film is recommended for 16+, according to Netflix. The image and description for the film have been updated in Netflix. The poster sparked outrage online, and with some comparing the poster to pedophilia. In the days following the release of the artwork, thousands had signed a Change.org petition calling for the film to be removed from Netflix. The film is now available on the service.Doucouré said the film is based in part on her own childhood experiences, and those of girls growing up today.“This is most of all an uncompromising portrait of an 11-year-old girl plunged in a world that imposes a series of dictates on her.” She said in an interview with Cineuropa. She continued that it is important to not judge these girls, but to understand them, listen to them and give them a voice. 2458

The White House released official portraits of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence Tuesday morning.According to an official press release from the White House, the portraits were produced by the Government Publishing Office. The photos will be distributed and displayed in the offices of federal agencies across the country. The walls of federal agencies have been a bit bare since Jan. 20, when former President Barack Obama's portrait was taken down in all federal agencies following the inauguration. A September story by the Washington Post reported that the Trump administration was slow to release an official portrait — Obama's portrait was released by March of his first year in office, President Bill Clinton's was released by June. The White House also says the photographs will be made available for sale to the public.  859

The White House on Monday blamed Hamas for the deaths of 52 Palestinians who were killed by Israeli security forces during mass protests in Gaza on Monday."The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas," White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said. "Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response and as the secretary of state (Mike Pompeo) said, Israel has a right to defend itself."Pressed repeatedly on whether Israel bears any responsibility and asked whether Israel should show more restraint, Shah again pointed the finger at Hamas -- seemingly absolving Israel of responsibility."We believe that Hamas is responsible for these tragic deaths," Shah said, adding that the terrorist group bears "responsibility for the entire situation right now."The 52 deaths on Monday came on the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence while a delegation of US officials joined Israeli leaders to mark the opening of the new US embassy in Jerusalem. Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the US embassy to the city in December has ratcheted up tensions in the region, where Israelis and Palestinians have competing claims to the holy city. The city is home to holy sites from three major religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam.Israeli forces used lethal and nonlethal means on Monday in an attempt to disperse mass protests that took place at the security fence between Gaza and Israel, which included some Palestinians attempting to cross into Israel.Tuesday marks the "Nabka," or Catastrophe, which remembers the 700,000 Palestinians who were driven from, or left, their homes during the Arab-Israeli war that came with the creation of the Israeli state. 1734
