BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) - The first Chinese language study program for foreign diplomats concluded on Saturday at Hanban, the executive body of the Chinese Language Council International.The program, which started on February 27 with a two-hour class every Saturday, had attracted 31 diplomats from 16 countries to China. The countries included Slovenia, Benin, Poland, Cameroon, Kenya, Nepal, Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Afghanistan, and the Philippines."We have a lot to do in China and that makes us feel that it is necessary to learn Chinese. Not only have we learnt the Chinese language, we have also made friends with the dedicated teachers and volunteer students," said Tadeusz Chomicki, Polish Ambassador to China.During the 17-weeks of classes, the foreign diplomats learned how to greet others, shop and ask time in Chinese. They also had classes on Chinese culture, experienced the Peking opera, paper cutting, Chinese calligraphy, and shadow boxing."They were always keeping a very high spirit to learn in all weather," said Xu Lin, director-general of Hanban. "Their enthusiasm towards the Chinese language has moved us a lot," she added.Xu said Hanban had developed diversified methods such as open online classes and after-class online consulting, to help them learn Chinese better.To meet the demand of more foreign diplomats to learn Chinese, Hanban will launch the next Chinese language program in September, Xu said.

In Chengxiang village, people were forced to row make-shift boats -- made of plastic bottles and planks -- to commute through the flooded streets.Chen Jian, the region's chief weather forecaster, said heavy rains are expected to fall on six Guangxi cities from June 7 to 10.Local disaster relief officials were ordered to evacuate residents in low-lying areas in advance. Safety measures at reservoirs shall also be reviewed, officials said.In Jiangxi Province, where mudslides recently derailed a train and flooding forced the evacuation of 90,000 residents, government departments and agencies were ordered to ramp up flood prevention measures.Schools, coal mines, markets and other populated areas will be carefully monitored to prevent accidents that could lead to massive casualties, according to officials.The alert noted that water levels in Jiangxi's reservoirs and waterways remain high, posing serious threats to the government's flood prevention work.Alarms also rang in central Hubei Province. The provincial meteorological bureau forecast heavy storms to hit Hubei from June 7 to 8 and might trigger flooding in its southern mountainous areas.By June 3, floods have killed 125 people and left 34 people missing all over China, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said.More than 23.09 million people and 1.55 million hectares of crops were affected. CANBERRA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The relationship between China and Australia is expected to be further boosted with over 20 documents of cooperation signed during the visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Australia's media reported on Monday."The high-level visit of Xi and hundreds of aides has made it clear how keen the two countries are to do business," the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported after the announcement of the deal in Canberra on Monday.According to AAP, Chinese companies will build mines, railways and port facilities in Australia under a series of deals.The new agreements are not only in the resources and energy sectors, but also include telecommunications, education and a quarantine protocol for exporting Tasmanian apples to China.Under one deal, Chinese companies will help fund an 8-billion-U. S.-dollar coal mine, railway and coal-loading terminal near Bowen in Queensland.The deal would yield 4 billion Australian dollars (3.53 billion U.S. dollars) in exports each year for 25 years, Rudd said.

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Chinese have joined a heated discussion about new rules that are designed to curb corruption and increase transparency about the assets of government officials.A regulation that took effect Sunday extends the list declarable assets for officials and introduces dismissal as the maximum penalty for failing to report assets honestly and promptly.The regulation adds six more items to the list of declarable assets issued in 2006, bringing the total to 14. The new items include incomes from sources like lecturing, painting and calligraphy; homes owned by spouses and children; and equities and investments owned by officials, their spouses and children.A FIRM STEPThe new rules have struck a public chord and almost 50,000 people had left comments on China's two biggest Internet portal websites on Monday. Thousands more were joining the discussion on other news sites and discussion forums.More than 36,500 people had made online comments on a news entry about the regulation on leading portal Sohu.com as of 1:30 p.m., and more than 11,000 comments on an entry at Sina.com.cn.Most of the published postings welcomed the new rules, but some said they should go further."The fight against corruption has a long way to go, but I am really glad to see each firm step taken by the central authorities," said a posting from Shanghai on Sina."We want to see more detailed provisions and harsher punishments in the rule," said a post by "Shihuiwen 197" on Sohu.The regulation was issued by the General Office of China's State Council and the General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.It requires officials at deputy county chief level and above to annually report their assets, marital status and whereabouts and employment of family members.It also empowers local provincial level CPC committees and governments to expand the regulations to officials below deputy county chief level.A CPC statement said Monday that most village or town chief level officials are prone to power-for-money transactions and corrupt actions as they are dealing with practical issues involving personnel, finance and materials.But as there are a large number of them, requiring all of them to report personal information will require much work and high costs, said the statement jointly issued by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the CPC Central Committee's Organization Department.So the central authority left the decision to local governments to decide based upon their own conditions, it said.New requirements for officials to report homes and investments reflected the need to change disciplinary structures in line with changing social and economic values, said Professor Liu Chun, deputy dean of the Graduate Institute of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.
