RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A rare crocodile monitor lizard is in the care of Riverside County Animal Services Friday while staff members search for its owner.Christine and J. Craig Williams found the five-pound, four-foot long lizard Wednesday at their Riverside home after their dogs began to bark at it, according to a news release.Animal Services Officer John Hergenreder used a loop to capture it. “It did not try to escape when I walked up to it, but it did start to hiss loudly,” Officer Hergenreder said. “It sensed I was coming to grab it.”“Crocodile monitors are not usually kept as pets by private individuals,” said reptile expert Kim McWhorter. “They need specialized care, mostly due to the large size they can reach. An owner would need a custom-built, room-sized enclosure. We hope the owner realizes we have their pet now. People are accustomed to coming to the shelter if they lose a dog or cat, but don’t necessarily think of us when they lose a lizard.”The Riverside City/County animal shelter in Jurupa Valley will hold the exotic pet for a period to allow the rightful owner to claim his/her lizard. (AP) — California's unemployment agency is not answering 60% of the calls it receives for help as the state struggles to work through a backlog of more than 1 million pending claims. Employment Development Director Sharon Hilliard told a panel of frustrated state lawmakers on Monday that California is on pace to have 3,700 people working in its call center by January. That's compared to the 350 it had working before the pandemic. Hilliard said the state is receiving about 6.7 million calls a week. "As of today, there is understanding that a practical phase of these response measures (in respect of US media in Russia over demands the RT broadcaster register itself as a foreign agent in the US) will begin next week."Zakharova did not specify which outlets would be targeted or what the actions would be. But last month, Russian officials sent letters to news organizations in Russia that are backed by the U.S. government, warning them of possible "restrictions."The comments are the latest in the increasing saber rattling from the Russian government regarding American media operations in Russia. Russian officials say it is in reaction to a request from the Justice Department that the Russian state-funded outlets RT and Sputnik register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) in the United States.RT's network is available on cable in the United States and Sputnik has an FM radio station in the U.S. Both have websites that are accessible in the U.S. Though the United States funds news organizations in Russia such as Radio Free Europe and Current, those outlets are not available on radio or on cable but are normally accessed via the internet.According to RT, the DOJ initially gave it an October deadline to register. RT has said it purposely missed that deadline as it tried to fight against the forced registration. Individuals or organizations that register under FARA are asked to disclose their funding, operations and other information, but are allowed to continue their work. Literally, birds dropping out of the sky type of thing,” said Alison Holloran, the executive director Audubon Rockies. “I actually got emails from Texas and New Mexico as well, where they’re also seeing larger numbers of die-offs.”The crowdsourcing website inaturalist.org has become a spot for people to post pictures of birds they have found as a way to provide more information to biologists and wildlife experts working to figure out why this is happening.The site reports more than 1,000 incidents have been reported involving 191 different bird species.“This is a very strange event,” said Travis Duncan, a spokesman with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “Heavy smoke from the wildfires may have played a part in creating navigation challenges for the birds.”Duncan says biologists are still performing necropsies to determine a cause, but he says all signs point to a combination of the wildfires raging across the western United States and an early-season cold front at the beginning of September that brought snow and freezing temperatures to parts of the Midwest and Southwest.Duncan says it may have caused the birds’ main food source, which is insects, to die off, forcing these birds to migrate without enough fat and weight to keep them safe once the cold front hit.“This is a web of life.
