SILVER SPRING, Md. -- For Habibah Jackson, the path to a healthier life may look like a personal journey, with only her dog, Rocky, for company.It’s anything but.“They like to say, ‘Oh, you're a walking group.’ We’re so much more than a walking group,” she said. “We like to say we're a ‘walking movement.’”Jackson helps lead neighborhood walks for GirlTrek, a nonprofit group of nearly 800,000 African American women taking one step at a time, together.The pandemic changed it a bit. So, to unite all of the now-solo walkers across the country, GirlTrek’s Ebony Andrews said the group launched a podcast, called Black History Bootcamp, focusing on African American women’s history.“Our focus is to help save the lives of Black women by inspiring them to take charge of their self-care, to own their joy, to claim what's their best lives,” Andrews said. “And one of the primary ways we do that is through encouraging community and encouraging walking.”It’s a move that can make a difference. According to the CDC, Black women are at high risk for heart disease and stroke and three times more likely than white women to die in childbirth. Some studies have linked those health effects for African American women to chronic stress, due to experiencing racism.GirlTrek seeks to counteract that.“Walking helps with stress. Walking is also something that requires limited resources. It's putting one foot in front of the other and getting out the front door,” Andrews said. “We have a saying that we say within our office that, ‘When women walk, things change.’”It’s something Jackson sees, too.“If you look at the social change that's happening now, imagine if you weren't in shape enough to walk - how could you actively protest if you're not physically able to keep a stance?” Jackson said. “People are walking for eight hours. September saw the highest number on record for family members crossing the US-Mexico border in a single month, the Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday.The figure could help fuel President Donald Trump's?calls for stricter immigration policies, a key issue he has been citing on the campaign trail in the closing weeks of the midterm election season.According to figures released by Border Patrol as part of its annual end of fiscal year numbers, 16,658 family members were apprehended crossing the border.The numbers were close during the 2014 unaccompanied minor crisis, when there were 16,330 apprehensions in June that year, and also close to numbers in December 2017, when 16,139 family members were apprehended on the southern border.2018 saw the most family apprehensions on the southern border, a DHS spokesperson said. The DHS data released Tuesday goes back to 2013.Overall apprehensions on the southern border in 2018 were also up slightly, at 396,579, up from 303,916 in 2017, but down from the previous year and in line with the last five years.The total is nowhere near the highs seen in the early 2000s.Senior administration officials told reporters Tuesday they have seen a steady increase of unaccompanied children and families compared to single adults apprehended illegally crossing the southern border. The officials spoke on a conference call under condition they not be identified by name.In September, almost 50% of those apprehended were family members and unaccompanied children. (KGTV) - A local woman believes she was the target of a so-called "slider" targeting drivers at gas stations.Just past noon on Wednesday at the Arco on Jamacha Road, Blanca Maye finished filling up and then noticed a white sedan pull up next to her.Inside the car was a casually dressed man, about 30 years old. She said he glanced at her car a few times and that made her pause. She locked up her car, after collecting some trash from it.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood"I was walking toward the trash can, and I remember hearing someone grab my door handle," said Maye.She says when she looked back there he was: the same man right next to her door, quickly walking away toward the cashier.Upset, Maye stared at him and then drove away with her purse safely sitting on the floor of her car. Others haven't been so lucky.  Recently, police in the Los Angeles area sent out video of "sliders" in action: thieves pulling up - and while the driver is distracted - getting low and sneaking toward the car to steal valuables. Police warned these incidents on the rise in Southern California and the target is usually women who are alone."People don't expect this to happen at gas station. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A Florida woman was arrested on Sunday after police say she stripped naked and ran around at a public park because she believed a giant spider was on her and she had to get away from it. St. Petersburg Police arrested 40-year-old Danielle Teeples on Sunday at Bartlett Park around 2:15 p.m. Police say that Teeples was completely nude and that there were numerous people in the park at the time of the incident. Police say that traffic on 4th Street South was heavy at the time of the incident and that numerous vehicles were slowing and honking at Teeples as they saw her behavior. According to an arrest report, Teeples was "acting erratically and rubbing her hair and breasts while screaming and running between two trees."St. Pete Police say Teeples initially refused to get dressed after police contacted her. Post Miranda, police say that Teeples admitted to recently using drugs such as crack cocaine, spice and crystal meth. She also said that she believed a giant spider was on her and she had to get away from it.Teeples was arrested and charged with exposure of sexual organs.  1164
