BUFFALO, N.Y. — Social workers could soon work alongside police officers in the Buffalo Police Department. Captain Jeff Rinaldo with the Buffalo Police Department said Monday that officers in Buffalo have been undergoing crisis intervention training for several years. He said officers are learning techniques to help handle situations with people in crisis, including mental health, substance abuse and homelessness. Buffalo police are working on an "initiative to embed licensed clinical social workers" who would work alongside police and help respond to crisis calls, according to paperwork submitted to the Buffalo Common Council. "The goal now is to create a specialized unit called the Behavioral Health Team within the police department," Rinaldo said. Endeavor Health Services is the company named in the proposed contract. A recently-awarded grant allowed the company to hire three trained clinicians to work with Buffalo police and handle crisis calls, Rinaldo said.The contract requires approval by the Common Council and is expected to be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday.The department's new plan was released as protesters across the country call for significant changes in policing. BRUCE TOWNSHIP, Michigan — A company that supplies equipment to the University Hospitals fertility center said its storage tank did not malfunction. “The early stages of our investigation into this unfortunate incident indicate it was the result of human error,” Custom Biogenic Systems said in a detailed statement sent to E.W. Scripps Co. TV station WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio.In a letter to patients on March 26, University Hospitals said that a remote alarm system on a storage tank that was designed to alert a University Hospitals employee to changes like temperature swings was turned off. UH said that on the evening of Saturday, March 3, the temperature inside the tank, which contained thousands of eggs and embryos, rose. UH does not know when the alarm was turned off. During the period when the alarm was off, UH said it had been experiencing “difficulty with what is called the liquid nitrogen automatic fill on the storage tank” for “several weeks.” Liquid nitrogen is added to the storage tank to keep specimens frozen, and it can be added manually or automatically. According to UH, “We had been working with the tank manufacturer who had previously provided instructions on the necessary maintenance to ‘thaw’ the storage tank to correct this difficulty. To do that required transferring all specimens to an extra storage tank previously provided by the manufacturer. This process takes several weeks, and had begun when this event occurred, though no eggs or embryos had yet been moved to the extra tank.”Custom Biogenic Systems, of Bruce Township, Mich., says the extra tank was available to UH on Aug. 15, 2017, UH finalized its arrangements for delivery of the tank on Oct. 27, 2017, and the tank was delivered on Nov. 2, 2017. That’s almost four months to the day before 950 UH patients lost 4,000 eggs and embryos in an event the hospital would later call “catastrophic." With the automatic fill not working on the original tank, UH added liquid nitrogen to the tank manually. This was done by connecting the storage tank with a line to a tank of liquid nitrogen from the Embryology Lab. But, according to UH, “For several days prior to the weekend in question, a manual fill could not be done using the line in the Embryology Lab because there were no liquid nitrogen tanks available. So, containers of liquid nitrogen were obtained from the Andrology Lab. Those containers were then manually poured into the top of the tank, while amounts of liquid nitrogen and temperature were monitored.” Custom Biogenic Systems says its tank is not designed to be filled by liquid nitrogen poured into the top of the tank.The company said its product manual states:  2744

BOISE, Idaho — Two high-profile geothermal water-line breaks in Downtown Boise have residents a bit concerned — especially since the city has plans to expand the system.But the City of Boise said the leaks were a lot less dramatic than the cool air mixed with steam made them look (images show bright green colors in the air), and are looking forward to the future of innovative geothermal ideas.Boise's geothermal heat system has been in full operation since the 1980s, and as usual, using water and metal is a recipe for corrosion. But the city says it is doing its best to remain proactive."A lot of people walk the streets of Downtown Boise and have no idea that such a big footprint of Downtown Boise is heated with this renewable, clean resource that we take advantage of in a big way every day," said Colin Hickman, communications manager in the Public Works Department for the City of Boise.It's a system that dates back to the 1890s when Boise began using geothermal heat for Victorian homes and the original natatorium. In 1983, Boise began the geothermal heat system, now holding the record for the largest geothermal system in the United States, supplying heat to 92 buildings in Downtown Boise."That equates to about 6-million square feet," Hickman said.It’s primarily used for heating buildings but it also provides heat for the YMCA pool, as well as sidewalks, providing shovel-free snow removal in the winter.JUMP is one of the buildings that uses the system."It's really a smart investment for JUMP, and for our community, as it's a low cost, clean, renewable, and local energy source, it made sense on a lot of levels," said Kathy O’Neill, the community engagement director at JUMP.The geothermal water is pumped from a well in the Boise Foothills. It's then brought downtown underneath buildings and run through pipes, where the water is sitting at 170 degrees. It's then put in a heat exchanger where it takes off about 55-degrees of that water, to heat the building.Afterward, it's taken back to be redeposited at Julia Davis Park.That process only started in 1999. Before then, the geothermal water was taken out of the aquifer, then disposed of in the Boise River — and aquifer levels started to decline. That happened until that re-injection site was made at Julia Davis Park, bringing aquifer levels right back up to where they began."The carbon footprint is almost nothing. it relies almost entirely on electricity just to pump up. There's no fossil fuel being used. It's a really clean and efficient energy," Hickman said.It also comes with a relatively low price tag."As far as our overall utilities, the geothermal is not a substantial cost for the city," Hickman said.The geothermal heating bill is costing about ,000 each winter month for the entire downtown area. And lucky for Boise, it's a system very unique to the Western U.S."It really comes down to where geothermal, an aquifer is available. And so it's really, Boise is very fortunate to have this aquifer right under our streets," Hickman said.The City of Boise's representatives said they are looking forward to expansion plans and new innovative uses of the geothermal system. 3208
