BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin is urging to cultivate more farmers who not only plant but also know the ABCs of technology and management, since the country is seeking new ways to promote rural development.     "We should foster many more 'new-style' farmers who are educated and who know techniques and the basics of sales and management," said Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, adding that rural areas should use urban development as a catalyst. Jia Qinglin, (2nd R), chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), speaks at a CPPCC National Committee meeting on balancing urban and rural development in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 2, 2008. Jia made the remarks at a CPPCC National Committee meeting on balancing urban and rural development held here on Tuesday.     "It is a historical task to balance urban and rural development and promote the integration of urban-rural economic society. It is also a complicated, long-term task."     Jia urged that improvement in major areas such as the residence registration system, the rural financial system, employment and land use be given priority.     Jia, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau, said goals such as lifting rural incomes and promoting agriculture efficiency should be incorporated into the overall plan of the country's economic development.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent. Investors read information at a stock trading hall in Shanghai, China, June 10, 2008. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row    Total turnover was just 67.5 billion yuan (9.65 billion U.S. dollars).     Financial, oil and petrochemical, real estate, mining, transportation and broker stocks led the plunge.     China Merchant Property, for example, dipped 7.36 percent to 16.12 yuan. A man looks at the electronic board showing the stock index at a securities exchange in Shanghai, east China, June 17, 2008. The Shanghai index slid through the 2,800-point mark, touching 2,799.33 points at midday, shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics said the growth rate of fixed-asset investment slowed in the first five months.     Urban fixed-asset investment rose 25.6 percent year-on-year to 4.026 trillion yuan in the first five months of 2008. The growth rate was 0.3 percentage points below the same period last year and 0.1 percentage point less than the January-April period this year.     Analysts said the market was also being undermined by surging world oil prices, weakening regional economies and the government's efforts to curb liquidity and tame inflation.     The People's Bank of China, the central bank, earlier this month lifted the bank reserve ratio by a full percentage point to 17.5 percent.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping called for a high-level Beijing Olympics by providing a secure environment, good media services and strict anti-doping work for the Games.     The preparatory work for next month's Olympics were effective, and the preparation for security, media services and doping inspection had achieved a first-class level worldwide, Xi said here on Monday when touring the Games' command center and several of the venues.     Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, thought highly of the Beijing security work, saying the capital had laid a good foundation for the safety work.     He praised the human-orientated facilities and equipment in the media village. BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.     The oil giant had 1.67 million staff last year, which meant more than 80,000 of them would be laid-off within three years, Beijing News reported.     The move followed CNPC's earlier announcement to cut non-production spending by 10 percent from a year earlier, the paper said. The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.    CNPC's profit before tax dropped by 39 percent year-on-year to 56.4 billion yuan (8.3 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half year as a result of refining loss and windfall taxes on crude oil sales.     To reduce costs, CNPC halted or cut investment in 49 projects in June, saving the company up to 20.72 billion yuan.     PetroChina, CNPC's listed arm, announced last month to issue no more than 60 billion yuan to "satisfy the operational needs of the company, further improve its debt structure, reduce financing costs and supplement working capital."

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The latest tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine, the country's top quality control agency said on Saturday.     It was the ninth investigation on the industrial chemical following the tainted baby formula scandal that killed at least three infants and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).     The latest tests covered 532 batches of liquid milk, including yogurt, from 69 brands in 23 major cities nationwide, the agency said.     At present, 4,213 batches of liquid dairy products from 131 brands produced after Sept. 14 were tested and all in line with the limit, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.     China on Wednesday set temporary limits on melamine content in dairy products. The limits were a maximum of 1 mg of melamine per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products containing at least 15 percent milk.     The State Council, or Cabinet, issued a series of quality control regulations for dairy products on Thursday.     The regulations tighten control of how milk-yielding animals are bred, how raw milk is purchased and the production and sales of dairy food.     They promised more severe punishment for people who violated safety standards and quality control departments that failed to fulfil their duties.
