SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Reports show some people are so desperate to get the new COVID-19 vaccine that they are offering boutique physicians thousands of dollars to jump the line — but doctors say that is not an option.Money can certainly get you perks: personalized care, treatment, even at-home COVID tests."Concierge clients definitely get privileges," Dr. Donna Ni said. "They really don't want to go to the doctor's office. They want to be seen at home. So a lot of the outpatient services are actually delivered at the patient's home."Dr. Ni owns San Diego Concierge Medicine, a boutique private practice offering medical and aesthetic services. With another surge in COVID-19 cases and the new vaccine roll-out, she says her clients are getting curious."They ask, 'How can I make sure I have plasma antibodies? How can I make sure I get Remdesivir? Do I qualify for Regeneron?'" Dr. Ni said.Some reports show the rich and famous in Los Angeles are getting antsy, asking their concierge doctors to administer the vaccine now. Some are even offering thousands of dollars in donations to jump the line. But Dr. Ni says that is not possible."It is only to the hospitals, to the front lines, and none of my members are going to be able to get that," Ni said. "Pfizer is highly controlled by the government right now, so we just tell the clients to wait a little."What they are doing now is preparing and connecting clients who fall in the second tier to hospitals with the vaccine."We want to make sure that our clients are one of the first in the second tiers," Ni said.While there are no jumping tiers or skipping the line, Dr. Ni says concierge clients do get perks, a doctor personally advocating on their behalf to get care quickly."We are not trying to get them to a different priority group," Ni said. "We just want to make sure that when that priority group hits, they are eligible for care."The only people who are eligible to receive the first wave of COVID-19 vaccines are hospital and emergency staff, as well as people at long-term care facilities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Nearly 200 volunteers are working in Logan Heights fixing up homes for families. One of those volunteers is Alexandra Pasquale. She believes this isn't just about grabbing tools and doing work, this is about families in the community.She's glad she can help them, "create their own wonderful memories, providing an environment they can have family meals in." Pasquale is part of Realty Income. The real estate company has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity. They will build 11 homes.As teams they're building fences, painting, and installing plywood. Pasquale says knowing who they are helping makes all the work worth it."It makes me feel so great that we're contributing to our community in a positive way," said Pasquale. 751

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- San Diego Pride festivities kicked off in the Hillcrest neighborhood Friday afternoon at the iconic Gay Pride Flag on University Ave. and Normal St. Thousands celebrated this year's theme, Stonewall 50: A Legacy of Liberation. The Glitz and Glam and the fabulous outfits at Pride are a product of dark times. "In 1969, being gay was considered a mental illness," San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Lopez said. "And the LGBT community was persecuted and prosecuted through legal and social systemic oppression and discrimination."In the summer of 1969, New York Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a place known as a safe spot for the LGBT community. Veronica Zerrer remembers watching the violence on the news. "When Stonewall happened, I was 12 years old, and I was just hitting puberty," Zerrer said. It was a turning point in her life because back then, she says she was hiding. "My name was Ronald," Zerrer said. "In fact, I have a really interesting story. I grew up being called Ronnie."Ronnie served in the U.S. Army for two decades and retired as a Major. The next year in 1999, Ronnie became Veronica. "Before I came out, I tried to be the person that I thought my family and society thought I should be, instead of what was inside my heart," Zerrer said.Fifty years later, San Diego Pride is honoring the rioters at Stonewall, who stood up against police prejudice. "This year, we are 'Stonewall 50: A legacy of liberation.' And the celebrations today, tomorrow and all weekend long are really going to reflect back in honor of our Stonewall generation. We'll talk about the legacy that we are all a part of, and what we need to do to recommit ourselves for the next generation," Lopez said. San Diego's affordable housing crisis has been getting more dire over the last five years because there's a lack of resources, a new report from the California Housing Partnership says. The report, released Wednesday, says the county needs 143,800 more affordable rental homes to meet current demand. However, there's less money and resources going to them. The average rent in the county is now up to ,992, and about the city's lowest income renters are spending 70 percent of their money on housing. Stephen Russell, who heads the San Diego Housing Federation, said the region took a hit in 2012, when the state eliminated redevelopment funds - 20 percent of which were reserved for affordable housing. Now, as cost of living rises, there are nearly 10,000 homeless San Diegans, thousands of them sleeping on the streets.Bruce Carron, 72, was one of them, until he got into Talmadge Gateway, a new 60-unit complex for low-income seniors with ongoing medical needs."It's just more than what I thought I deserved, but somewhere along the line God wanted me to win somewhere in this crazy life that we have," Carron said. The city will soon decide whether to place a property tax bond on the November ballot to pay for more affordable housing. It would charge for every 0,000 of assessed value, and pay for 7,500 new homes. San Diego is falling behind other major California cities when it comes to new construction of Accessory Dwelling Units, also known as "Granny Flats."The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development defines an accessory dwelling units (ADUs) — also referred to as accessory apartments, second units, or granny flats — "as additional living quarters on single-family lots that are independent of the primary dwelling unit."The California State Assembly passed a new law in 2016 requiring cities to make it easier for people to build ADUs by easing regulations. State lawmakers see it as a way to help solve the housing crisis."The separate living spaces are equipped with kitchen and bathroom facilities, and can be either attached or detached from the main residence."But in the first 10 months after the law went into effect, San Diego only saw 64 new permit applications to build a granny flat. By comparison, in the same time, Los Angeles got 1980 applications. San Francisco had 593, Oakland had 247 and San Jose had 166. Only Sacramento, with 34, had fewer than San Diego.Developers think San Diego's high permitting fees are holding up the process."People are ready to build a granny flat, they've hired architects and they're ready to go," says Caitlin Bigelow. Her company, Housable, helps people navigate all of the fees and permits they need to build. "They just don't want to pay ,000 extra dollars they may not have to in six months," she says.Depending on where you live and how big an ADU you want to build, a city report showed fees could climb as high as ,000. Those fees cover the costs of connecting ADUs to city utilities like water, sewer and power.
