On October 11, people around the world recognize International Day of the Girl. The Girl Scouts of America are celebrating with this year's National Gold Award Girl Scouts. These ten girls are making big waves across the country."For my Gold Award, I developed an oral healthcare model with three foundational pillars; education, prevention and treatment targeting oral healthcare inequalities in low income communities in Georgia and the Bhalswa Slums District in India," said Siya K., one of the ten girls awarded the prestigious National Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of America. She's educated 5,000 families across five states on dental health and distributed 130,000 dental supplies in Georgia and India. She was motivated to research preventative measures for oral cancer after she lost her grandmother to the disease several years ago."My health model has been embraced by dental offices, state dental associations, national mobile programs and schools in two countries. And to kind of further the reach of Help a Child Smile, I created a non-profit called Mila Foundation to kind of support the oral healthcare services provided by Help a Child Smile," said Siya K.This year's National Gold Award Girl Scouts have done everything from create theater access for children with disabilities to engineer an insulin calculator app. Julia T. lobbied for menstrual equity in her home state of Colorado."Definitely, it began within my own high school where I saw a lot of girls struggling to handle their menstrual cycles with dignity and efficiency in the learning environment. Because of varying incomes in our school and also the lack of accessibility, it made it so that girls had a hard time being able to talk about such private matters with their teachers. So, they would have to leave school and miss class," said Julia T.Julia was working with her local legislator to expand access to menstrual products in schools. The bill went to the House Committee for Education before the pandemic. She hopes to bring it back before legislators in the future. "What I love about the Gold Award is it's really a culmination of the Girl Scout experience, because at every level girls are taught to take agency and action on issues they care about. With the Gold Award, it's the highest award you can earn in Girl Scouts," said Kelly Parisi, the VP of Executive and Brand Communications at the Girl Scouts of the USA. Parisi says Gold Award Girl Scouts are tasked with developing long standing change for an issue they care about. Each council across the country submits three of their most exceptional Gold Award Girl Scouts and a panel chooses the top ten. "We are so proud of these ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts but we are equally as proud of thousands of girls across the country who earned their Gold Award and are looking to take action on issues in their community they care about," said Parisi.Julia and Siya hope their achievements inspire other girls across the country to work hard and recognize the impact they can have on the world. "The biggest thing I would say is dream big. Don't think that your issue is too big to solve. Just focus on taking small steps at a time. Don't be afraid in reaching out to people and connecting with people because people are more than willing to help," said Siya."I believe policy makers want to hear from you on the issues that affect you and your demographic so just taking advantage of being a youth and having that sort of power where people want to hear your voice on how matters affect you and just be incredibly persistent in the face of opposition," said Julia. As part of earning a National Gold Award, these ten girl scouts will also receive tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarship money. 3767

Now that baseball season is officially back, it's time to fire up the grills for hot dog and sausage season. But before you go out to the ballpark, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council would like to remind fans the proper etiquette when it comes to eating dogs.Don't...Put hot dog toppings between the hot dog and the bun. Always "dress the dog," not the bun.Condiments should be applied in the following order: wet condiments like mustard and chili are applied first, followed by chunky condiments like relish, onions and sauerkraut, followed by shredded cheese, followed by spices, like celery salt or pepper. 637

ORLANDO, Fla. - A baby born at 22 weeks and weighing just 12 ounces is going home after spending six months at the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.Doctors said in a press release that baby Diana Peguero is the tiniest baby to ever survive and graduate from the hospital's NICU. Today, she weighs over 7 pounds and is currently thriving at home.According to the Orlando Sentinel, Diana's mother, Jomary Tavarez, was starting to dilate when she went in for a routine checkup in April at 20 weeks pregnant.Doctors then admitted Jomary to Winnie Palmer, and on Mother's Day, Diana was born weighing 12 ounces and was nine inches long. However, after examining her size and development, doctors believe Diana was younger than 22 weeks since gestational age is just an estimate. From May 10 to Nov. 6, Diana spent her first six months of her life in the hospital's NICU, but doctors said she never needed any life-saving surgeries.A few days after giving birth to Diana, doctors discharged Tavarez from the hospital, the newspaper reported. For six months, the couple traveled from their home in Ocala, Florida, to the hospital to see their daughter.According to the newspaper, doctors initially told Tavarez and her husband Federico that most babies, Diana's size, didn't survive the first three days, which Diana did.Diana's medical team continued to set more goals for Diana, which she continued to pass, the newspaper reported.By the end of June, her parents could carry her for the first time. In July, they got to hold her, the paper reported.Diana's parents are thrilled to finally take their first and only child home, especially for Federico, with her coming home a day after his birthday."It's a bittersweet day for us in the NICU," said Dr. Thais Queliz, a neonatologist at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer. "We're sad to see Diana leave since she and her parents have been with us for so long. But we're so proud of how far she's come and are happy for them to start their lives at home as a family of three."Diana is one of only 10 babies in the world recorded to have survived at her size and gestational age. 2148

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy wrote a letter to Oceanside residents saying he was concerned after watching a video of one of his officers tasing a man to the ground. The letter comes after the department released body camera footage, just two days after the incident. Chief McCoy has since asked the Professional Standards Unit to review the case.A man topples to the ground after being tased by an Oceanside police officer. On Tuesday afternoon, officers learned about a man armed with a knife, punching, stabbing, and attempting to carjack several people in the Mesa Margarita neighborhood. When officers arrived, they found the suspect, David Avila. In the video released on the department's twitter page, you can see two perspectives of the incident. One was from the body camera of the officer who deployed his taser. The other was a cell phone video, shot by a citizen.During a heated altercation, the video shows Avila with his hands up, kicking what looks to be a knife towards the officer in front of him. At the same time, the officer switches to his less-lethal option, the taser."Stay back. Stay back! Down on your knees!" the officer yelled.Avila then takes two steps toward the officer, stops, and is then shot by a taser. Two days after the incident, McCoy not only released the footage but said in a statement, "I have had the opportunity to review this video and it has raised concerns to me."Retired San Diego Police lethal force instructor, Ray Shay, says it could be that the officer tased the suspect who already had his hands up, from the front. Under the department's Policy and Procedures Manual, it states:"A TASER should be aimed at a suspect's upper torso and, when tactically possible, should be aimed at the suspect's back. This provides a larger target and avoids possible injury to a suspect's eyes. (Revised 07/01)"However, Shay believes this was justified."With the taser to the front, and then lethal option behind him, and the bean bag option to the left, in this challenging circumstance, the officers did the best they can do to safely take the suspect into custody," Shay said.Barry Pollard, formerly with the San Diego Citizens Advisory Board on Police Community Relations, says what bothered him was what happened as officers subdued Avila."You would think, in these days, nobody's knee would come close to the neck are," Pollard said. "It looked like a reaction is what it looked like, then he caught himself and moved his knee."However, Pollard says because the knee was not directly on the neck, he does not see this as a blatant violation.ABC 10News reached out to Oceanside Police to see exactly what parts of the video concerned the Chief. We did not get a response. The suspect was taken to the hospital but was cleared for booking. He is being held on one million dollars bail. 2862
