Mere hours after 11 people were killed by a suspect anti-Semite in the Pittsburgh area on Saturday, a haunted house located less than a three-hour drive away hosted an annual promotion known as "Swastika Saturday."After word of the promotion drew criticism from the public, the Haunted Hoochie located in Pataskala, Ohio was unwavering in its defense of the promotion. "It's a symbol used for love stolen and used for hate ... it’s how nationalism works," the haunted house said on its Facebook page in response to criticism. "Interesting how suicide scenes murder and abortions is all ok but please dont (sic) wear a symbol. It maybe to much," the Haunted Hoochie posted in another comment. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Haunted Hoochie has run the Swastika Saturday promotion for 28 years. After two days of criticism, the Haunted Hoochie released a statement acknowledging it had made a mistake.  972

Marijuana is still federally illegal, but multiple states will vote on either medical or recreational marijuana measures this election. In South Dakota, voters will be deciding on both."It's very rural, I like to tell people it's one big small town," said Melissa Mentele, Executive Director of New Approach South Dakota, when explaining South Dakota. "South Dakota is incredibly conservative."This upcoming election, South Dakota is looking at a traditionally liberal ballot measure -- allowing medical marijuana."It's about 70 to 30 red to blue. And if you're red, you typically aren't pro-marijuana," David Tingle, a resident of Sioux Falls since 1996, said. But pro-marijuana organizations are looking to change that."We have patients from every single demographic. We have patients that are 6-month-old babies with seizure disorders up to 90 plus-year-old people," said Mentele, The organization has been working on patient access to medical marijuana in South Dakota for six years. This election, through Measure 26."We want to be done. There's a lot of us that have given our lives to this," she said.South Dakota is the first state to vote on medical marijuana, Measure 26, and recreational marijuana, Amendment A, in the same election. Measure 26 would establish a medical marijuana program. Amendment A would legalize recreational use for those over 21 and have written for a medical marijuana program."The revenue from Amendment A would be split 50-50 to our schools in South Dakota and our state's general fund," said Drey Samuelson, Political Director for South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws."People don't have any real trouble getting marijuana. If you want it, you can get it. The question is where you're going to get it from, an illegal, illicit source," he said. "The alternative is people can buy it from a clean, well-lit dispensary."Despite promises of additional revenue and jobs for the state, Amendment A is not supported by everyone."They're going to create an additional consumer choice, they're not going to increase the wealth of South Dakota," David Owen, President of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce, said. He is also the chairman of the "No Way on Amendment A" ballot committee."It threatens increased youth usage. It threatens more traffic accidents. It's an intoxicant," Owen said.Owen said the Chamber supports the medical use of marijuana but said an amendment to the state's constitution for recreational marijuana makes no sense."This is a constitutional amendment, and this is not the place. Tobacco is not in the constitution; alcohol is not in the constitution," Owen said. "Our polling suggests that a good segment of people that want to vote for Amendment A want to do so for medical reasons. They want to help people that are sick."This includes South Dakotans like David Tingle."If anybody is in pain and that is the only thing that helps them or helps them the best, there should be accommodations made for them, I think. I have concerns that that could be abused," said Tingle, who works at a local contracting company. "I've lived in South Dakota since 1996."While he understands medical marijuana use, he said he does not want recreational cannabis in the state."I will vote against it, and I fully expect it to be defeated," he said.South Dakota is one of five states voting on a marijuana issue this election. Currently, four states have no cannabis access -- Idaho, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, according to information from the National Conference of State Legislatures in March 2020. Eleven states allow adult recreational use, and another 25 have some legal, medical cannabis, or CBD program."If we pass both of them, we officially take one giant leap toward federal reform," Mentele said. "Because we are one of those states that this is an issue that most people never dreamed that we would A get enough signatures to put both on the ballot, and B that people would support this."Sam D'Arcangelo, Director of the Cannabis Voter Project, wrote to E.W. Scripps in a statement:"Of the four states voting on recreational marijuana legalization this year, only New Jersey is a solidly blue state. If legalization makes it over the finish line in conservative states like South Dakota and Montana, it will be a game-changer. It will mean pretty much any state is within reach if you can get something on the ballot."The decision is in the hands of South Dakota voters."This wouldn't have passed 10 years ago for sure, but people's attitudes in America are changing," Samuelson said. 4556

Members of the Ottawa Senators were caught on camera slamming one of their coaches while they were in the Phoenix area to face the Arizona Coyotes last week, the Ottawa Sun reported Monday.During the video, Senators players made derogatory comments about an assistant coach during an Uber ride in the Valley. The conversation was being recorded, presumably by the Uber driver and without the knowledge of any of the players.Forward Matt Duchene, defenseman Chris Wideman, center Chris Tierney, defenseman Thomas Chabot, defenseman Dylan DeMelo, forward Colin White and forward Alex Formenton were in the vehicle during the conversation in question. The video lasts a total of five minutes.During the video, the players made comments about Senators assistant coach Martin Raymond, questioning the effectiveness of his coaching and his meetings to discuss strategy. “Do you notice that when he runs the video, if you actually do pay attention, he doesn’t ever teach you anything? He just commentates what’s happening," Wideman said.“Here’s the other thing, too. We don’t change anything, ever. So why do we even have a meeting? I haven’t paid attention in three weeks," Duchene said. In response to the video, the players seen in the video issued the following statement Monday night:"We want to apologize publicly to Marty Raymond, our teammates and coaches for our comments in Phoenix, Arizona on October 29. Our private conversation was recorded without our knowledge or consent. We're passionate about our team, and focusing on growing together. We are grateful for the support of our fans and organization. This is an important learning experience, and we will do better."In addition, Senators head coach Guy Boucher issued the following statement:"Nothing is more important to us during this rebuild than making sure our players and coaches are fully committed to our plan, our values and our system of play. We have every confidence in Marty Raymond's coaching; in the effort and determination of our team; and in the sincerity of our players' apology. We are now treating this as a team matter, and will be making no further comment to the media."The video was posted on YouTube and Twitter last weekend before being removed, but the Ottawa Citizen has since reposted the video. It appears the Uber driver may also be in some trouble, as Rob Khazzam, general manager of Uber Canada, said the following via Twitter on Monday evening:"A video was released by the media today of several Uber passengers being filmed without their consent while having a private discussion during a trip in Phoenix. This is a clear violation of our terms of service and we worked vigorously to investigate this issue. Filming or recording passengers without their consent is totally unacceptable and if reported / detected we will investigate + take action to preserve our communities privacy and integrity. In this specific case, we made efforts to have the video taken down."Warning: This video contains strong language. The Coyotes defeated the Senators 5-1 on Oct. 30. 3148

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico is bracing for the possible arrival of the "mother of all caravans," even as doubts arise over whether the group of Central American migrants will be all that big.Interior Secretary Olga Sanchez Cordero has said a caravan of migrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala could be forming."We have information that a new caravan is forming in Honduras, that they're calling 'the mother of all caravans,' and they are thinking it could have more than 20,000 people," Sanchez Cordero said Wednesday. But a WhatsApp group calling for people to gather Saturday in El Salvador to set off for Guatemala only has about 206 members.Activist Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied several caravans in Mexico, said reports about "the mother of all caravans" were false, claiming "this is information that (U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen) Nielsen is using to create fear."His group, Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said in a statement there was no evidence the new caravan would be that large, noting "there has never been a caravan of the size that Sanchez Cordero mentioned." Indeed, past caravans hit very serious logistical hurdles at 7,000-strong.She and others suspect the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump may be trying to fan fears of a big caravan to turn the U.S. national agenda back to the immigration issue.Honduran activist Bartolo Fuentes, who accompanied a large caravan last year, dismissed the new reports as "part of the U.S. government's plans, something made up to justify their actions."A caravan of about 2,500 Central Americans and Cubans is currently making its way through Mexico's southern state of Chiapas. The largest of last year's caravans in Mexico contained about 7,000 people at its peak, though some estimates ran as high as 10,000 at some points.Mexico appears to be both tiring of the caravans and eager not to anger the United States. It has stopped granting migrants humanitarian visas at the border, and towns along the well-traveled route to Mexico City sometimes no longer allow caravans to spend the night.Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Thursday that Mexico is doing its part to fight immigrant smuggling."We are going to do everything we can to help. We don't in any way want a confrontation with the U.S. government," he said. "It is legitimate that they are displeased and they voice these concerns."Sanchez Cordero has pledged to form a police line of "containment" around Mexico's narrow Tehuantepec Isthmus to stop migrants from continuing north to the U.S. border. The containment belt would consist of federal police and immigration agents, but such highway blockades and checkpoints have not stopped large and determined groups of migrants in the past. 2757
