In an industry like cosmetology, where all services revolve around hair, skin and nails, getting up close and personal to people is a big part of the job.For those looking to make a career in the beauty business, the pandemic is taking a toll. “I had 84 students pre-COVID,” said Donna Kramer, executive director at Empire Beauty School. “I have 72 right now.”Kramer says COVID-19 initially caused the campus to close.It’s recently reopened with new restrictions set by the local health department. Class sizes are smaller, fewer clients can come in due to social distancing and all students have to wear masks.The area that’s taken the biggest hit, however, is attendance.“It’s kind of toying with people’s personal lives,” Kramer said. “We’ve had students that have had to miss a lot of school because of daycare issues. We’ve had students that have had to actually stay away temporarily because their spouses.”According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of hairstylists and cosmetologists is projected to drop by 1% by the end of the decade, which is leaving many students concerned that their career opportunities might be going down the drain.“I know a lot of students kind of have that fear of not being able to find a job now with COVID,” said Alexis Lovato, a cosmetology student at Empire Beauty School.Lovato says many of her classmates are concerned about their employment options once their training is complete.“I think a lot of its just worried about being placed and what’s going to be available for them after their graduation,” she said.Kramer says despite the challenges, students are still getting their hours in and while hands-on training may be a little different, it’s a style they can adapt to.“This industry is going to really flourish once we can get through this,” she said. 1826

IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) - A man was arrested Saturday in Imperial Beach after residents say he rushed into a home and wrecked their bathroom, leaving blood everywhere. Resident Miguel Ledesma said their front door was open to let in the breeze, "I heard some noise behind me and I turned around and the door was wide open, so I saw him rush through." The man was mumbling about being chased. Ledesma said the man backed up, tripping over the Christmas tree, knocking it over in the process, and went into the bathroom. Ledesma said that's when his brother shut the door to protect the family."There were screams, the lady who lives in there she was screaming pretty loudly," Neighbor Matthew Rodriguez said."We started hearing all these noises, all the breaking, the mirror, the shower curtain, everything in there is destroyed, there's bloody pretty much," Ledesma said. Officers finally removed the man, handcuffing him. The man was later loaded into an ambulance.He had visible cuts on his neck and arms, and a bandage around his head. Ledesma said he came in without a scratch and left bloody."It was pretty scary because we didn't know what he was going to do before the cops showed up," Rodriguez said."We're all okay, he didn't take anything, he just destroyed the bathroom pretty much," Ledesma said. HOUSTON, Texas – A businessman in Texas is facing federal charges after allegedly spending COVID-19 relief funds on improper expenses, including on real estate, a Lamborghini Urus and at strip clubs.Federal officials announced Tuesday that Lee Price III, 29, was taken into custody and charged with making false statements to a financial institution, wire fraud, bank fraud and engaging in unlawful monetary transactions.Price is accused of fraudulently obtaining more than .6 million in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. The loans provided by the Small Business Administration (SBA) are meant to support business owners struggling during the pandemic. Businesses must use the loan proceeds for payroll costs, interest on mortgages, rent and utilities.A criminal complaint alleges Price was involved in a scheme to submit fraudulent PPP loan applications to federally insured banks and other lenders, two of which received funding.Price Enterprises Holdings allegedly received more than 0,000, while a loan application listing 713 Construction was approved for over 0,000.The loan applications allegedly asserted both entities each had numerous employees and significant payroll expenses. However, neither entity has employees nor pays wages consistent with the amounts claimed in the loan applications, authorities say.Further, the individual listed as CEO on the 713 Construction loan application died in April 2020, a month before the application was submitted, according to the complaint.Price allegedly used the loan proceeds not for payroll expenses, but for lavish personal purchases, such as spending the loan money on a Lamborghini Urus, a Rolex watch and real estate transactions.
