There’s been talk of a “blue wave” heading into the midterm elections, with more Democrats energized and ready to vote. But just two weeks before the midterms, a new poll suggests the wave could be crashing.The lead in the election polls Democrats once had has fallen. In many of the battleground House or Representatives races, candidates from both parties are running almost even, according to a Washington Post poll.Another report finds Republicans are outpacing Democrats in early voting in key states, many of which are seeing record turnout.President Donald Trump outlined what he feels has sparked the turnaround.“This will be the election of the caravan, Kavanaugh, law and order, tax cuts and common sense,” Trump says.Even Democrats are downplaying the chances of a “blue wave.”“If the election were held today, the Democrats would handily win the House,” Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, says. “I can only speak in the present tense because you never know in a couple of weeks.”The president just announced he'll hold at least another ten rallies before the midterms, meaning he will have spoken at more than 30 rallies in the final five weeks of the campaign.President Barack Obama is also on the road, campaigning for Democrats.“The consequences of anybody here not turning out and doing everything you can to get your friends neighbor's family to turn out, the consequences of you staying home would be profoundly dangerous to this country and to our democracy,” Obama said during a recent rally.In these final couple weeks, both parties are having rallies across the country to motivate their base and to see which party can convince more of their voters to turnout. 1733

There have been 80 confirmed cases of the polio-like illness known as AFM in 25 states this year as of Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.In addition, there are 139 cases under investigation for a total of 219 confirmed and suspected.This is eight more confirmed cases than the agency reported last week and 20 additional patients under investigation.The CDC noted an increase in reports of patients under investigation who began experiencing symptoms in August, September and October. It has not identified the 25 states with confirmed illnesses, nor has it said how many states are reporting cases under investigation.AFM, or acute flaccid myelitis, is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and can cause muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. Last month, the CDC said that 90% of patients since 2014 have been children under the age of 4, although adults can also develop AFM.Other symptoms include drooping of the face or eyelids, difficult eye movement, trouble swallowing or slurred speech.Research is underway to determine the cause of AFM, although there is a focus on enteroviruses, which can cause respiratory illness and West Nile virus, and other viruses in that family.According to the CDC, there have been 404 confirmed cases in the United States since August 2014. The number of cases may be higher, but the condition is not subject to mandatory reporting, so not all cases are reported to state health departments and therefore may not be counted by the CDC."Even with an increase in cases since 2014, AFM remains a very rare condition. Less than one in a million people in the United States get AFM each year," the CDC says.AFM peaks every other year seasonally in late summer and fall. but experts have yet to identify a single factor geographically or otherwise to explain the cause. Three explosions that occurred when people picked up packages outside their residences appear to be connected, Austin, Texas, city Police Chief Brian Manley said Monday at a news conference.A Monday morning explosion killed a 17-year-old African-American boy and also injured a woman at the house. A second Monday explosion left a 75-year-old woman in critical condition, the chief said. A March 2 blast killed a 39-year-old African-American man.All the explosions occurred when people who lived at the residences went outside and picked up packages, Manley said. The packages were not delivered by the postal service or delivery services like UPS or FedEx, he said."The evidence makes us believe these incidents are related," he said, saying investigators have not come up with a motive or whether anybody has claimed responsibility. It's not known if the victims knew each other or if they were targeted, he said.Police also have not decided if these are hate crimes, but said that's a real possibility of the victims' races."We're not ruling anything out at this point," he said. "We're willing to investigate any avenue."Authorities have only identified one victim. Anthony Stephan House, 39, died from injuries in the March 2 explosion, police said. The elderly woman injured today sustained life-threatening injuries, the chief said.In describing the Monday morning blast that killed the teenager, the chief said: "What we understand at this point is that early this morning is that one of the residents went out front and there was a package on the front doorstep. They brought that package inside the residence and as they opened that package, both victims were in the kitchen, and the package exploded, causing the injuries that resulted in the young man's death and the injuries to the adult female."The female's injuries were not life-threatening, he said.Manley strongly urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious packages and to alert authorities immediately."If you've received a package that has been left on your doorstep or left in your yard or left on your driveway that you were not expecting or that was not from someone you know, then give us a call," Manley said.Likewise, he urged the thousands of visitors in town -- many at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival -- to be cautious. "Enjoy yourself, have a good time," he said. "But be aware, be suspicious."The festival began Friday in downtown Austin and ends Tuesday. The explosions are not in the immediate vicinity of the festival.Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged all Texans to be cautious. "With three reported explosions in the Austin area, I want to urge all Texans to report any suspicious or unexpected packages arriving by mail to local law enforcement authorities.
