SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Monday a larger investment into a program creating job opportunities for the homeless. Wheels of Change was launched in 2018 as a public-private partnership providing jobs and training for those living in the Alpha Project bridge shelter. “It’s innovative, it’s unique. It’s working it’s growing and it’s making a difference in people’s lives,” said Faulconer. The program is expanding from three to ten shifts per week, with participants earning per hour as they remove litter and debris through the Clean SD initiativee. An additional van is also being provided to transport the 20 workers. The City of San Diego doubled its investment to 0,000 this fiscal year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego has unveiled its first new trolley station in over a decade as city leaders gathered to celebrate Friday.The Courthouse Station is located at the south side of C Street between State and Union streets.The station will replace the American Plaza station as the new endpoint to Metropolitan Transit System’s Orange Line.The first new station since 2005 began to serve passengers Sunday. Aside from being located outside the city’s new 22-story courthouse, the station is located within close access to 44,500 jobs.Construction of the new station began in August. 598

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue Thursday pulled a man to safety who fell 30 feet into a trench on the grounds of a work site at UC San Diego. According to the department, the incident happened just before 3 p.m. on Voit Drive at Matthews Lane. Crews used a pulley system to get the worker, a man in his 20s, out of the trench. He was then taken to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of blunt-force injuries and burns he received when he landed on a steam pipe. His condition is unknown at this time. RELATED: 1 dead, 4 injured in accident at construction site at UC San DiegoNearby workers and an officer were able to climb down and stay with the worker until he could be safely lifted out of the trench.The incident comes after one of five workers injured in a construction site accident died on the UC San Diego campus in July of 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan is objecting to the early release of a man convicted of driving off the Coronado Bridge and crashing in Chicano Park, killing four people.Richard Anthony Sepolio, 27, was convicted of four counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of DUI causing injury in the crash on Oct. 15, 2016. He was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison. He is set to be released early after serving two years and 10 months of his sentence. Monday, the CDCR notified victims in the case of the release, citing prison credits for good behavior and the state's policy on release amid COVID-19. Stephan wrote a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), calling the release a "miscarriage of justice.""This very early release is unconscionable," Stephan wrote. "CDCR’s decision is re-victimizing the family and friends of the four people killed and seven injured who have been devastated by their loss and continue to deal with the financial, emotional, mental and physical trauma caused by the defendant. This inmate continues to deny and minimize the crime by refusing to admit he was speeding and denying being impaired while arguing with his girlfriend on the phone, which resulted in the devastating crash."The crash killed Annamarie Contreras, 50, and Cruz Contreras, 52, of Chandler, Ariz.; and Hacienda Heights residents Andre Banks, 49, and Francine Jimenez, 46. Seven other people were also seriously injured.Sepolio was traveling between 81 and 87 miles per hour when he lost control and plunged over the bridge, landing in the park below where a motorcycle rally had attracted nearly 1,000 people, according to Stephan. Sepolio had testified that another vehicle would not let him over into the left-hand lane, so he sped up twice to pass before the crash occurred. 1912

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have arrested a 26-year-old in connection with a Logan Heights house fire that killed three of his family members last weekend.Police say Wilber Romero was arrested Friday for homicide and arson in connection with the deaths of his parents 44-year-old Jose Romero and 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero, and his sister 21-year-old Iris Romero in a house fire on Sunday. Romero's mother and sister died at the hospital in the days following the blaze while his father died in the fire. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. He has been booked into county jail and is set to arraigned on Oct. 22.On Oct. 13, the fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of Clay Ave. Firefighters had to go inside and pull the victims out.Romero, who identified himself to 10News that morning as the family's oldest son, said he awoke to find his bed on fire and tried to yell for his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," Romero said after the blaze.One witness told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through the bars in the windows, unable to escape the fire."The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm.
