She wired 0 via Western Union to a website -- now gone -- called Best Mini Shnauzers.com.That was the end of the seller, and of her puppy dreams."I tried to text him numerous times after that," she said. "Called him, couldn't get through. That was the end of the communications. Nothing."Puppy scam worsens during pandemicThe puppy scam has been around for more than five years, but the BBB says this year it's getting worse because so many people want either a "pandemic puppy" or a holiday puppy.Sara Kemerer of the Better Business Bureau said real puppy photos get reposted at counterfeit websites."It's very easy for scammers to steal a video or picture of a pet from the internet to make the pet seem real," she said.But the pups are always out of town, and the seller will ask hundreds of dollars for shipping and insurance.Once you wire them the money, they and their ad disappear.How to protect yourselfSo what can you do? Kemerer says ask for video of the seller with the pup. Students have powered on as best they can during the pandemic. Handling remote learning and adjusted teaching methods. Now, some schools are partnering with local industry leaders to help make some classes more hands-on, even while taking classes from home."We have several auto-shop classes. Auto shop is completely hands-on, right? Kids need to be in the grease, they need to be on the tools. And so, it's been very difficult. So we've actually had some teachers that actually put together tool kits and checked them out to students where they can tinker with things at home," said Dr. Jamon Peariso, the Director of College and Career Readiness at Visalia Unified School District.Dr. Peariso says continuing career technical education, also known as CTE, at school has been difficult during remote learning. Danny Corwin, with Harbor Freight Tools, says they're here to help with their Tools for Schools program."We wanted to come up with creative ideas to help both the teachers and the students and the parents trying to support their kids. Fortunately, we have a group of incredibly inventive and genius teachers and we wanted to provide them with the tools and other supports to allow them to do what they do best," said Corwin.Bob Kilmer, an Educational Consultant for Harbor Freight Tools, said in an auto shop tool kit kids would receive "everything from code readers to socket sets to hand wrenches to bolt readers. Harbor Freight's foundation has handed out more than 3,600 tool kits to teachers all across the country."The great part about the project was that those 53 teachers in those 12 states got a choice of what they could put in the kit for their particular discipline and the automotive kit is different than the welding kit, which is different than the construction and architecture kit, which is different than the robotics kit or the mega-tronics kit," said Kilmer.For school districts like Visalia Unified, the kits couldn't have come at a better time."There's a lot of companies like that that are coming out with more interactive-type educational tools that do a pretty good job considering the kids are locked in their room or house doing the course. That’s something I’m excited about and we’re utilizing that as much as possible in their pathways," said Dr. Peariso.For companies like Harbor Freight Tools, these tools are crucial for engaging students in an industry that needs them. Corwin says one in every three skilled trade workers across the country will be retiring within the next ten years. And they don't want the COVID-19 pandemic to slow down efforts to build up a new workforce for the industry."We've got to address the pipeline and we've got to ensure young people are exposed to the trades in high school and have a pathway to continue the work that they love, that they’re good at. TEMPE, Ariz. — It's a huge breakthrough for the highly contagious and deadly norovirus as researchers at the Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute have come up with a vaccine made from plants.The norovirus is known as the perfect human pathogen. It can have you feeling awful for days, but researchers at ASU say a form of the tobacco plant may be the key to a vaccine.Also known as the cruise ship illness, norovirus hits nearly 20 million Americans every year. According to Andy Diamos, a post-doctoral researcher at ASU, the average person has the stomach bug five times in their life.“Norovirus is a horrible bug to get,” said Diamos. “It causes vomiting, diarrhea, all sorts of nasty stuff.”There is no vaccine for the highly contagious bug because it's notoriously difficult to produce in a lab, until now, thanks to Diamos and Hugh Mason with the Biodesign Center.“Genetic engineering has allowed us to design systems like plants to produce useful things like vaccines,” said Diamos.By using a form of the tobacco plant, researchers discovered that a harmless bacteria would help grow a norovirus vaccine when the proper genes are transferred to the leaves.“You can basically put in whatever genes you want and transfer those to the plant, so that's how we get the plant to make the vaccine,” said Diamos.According to Diamos, real viruses are surrounded by a shell that protects its genes. The vaccine that grows inside the tobacco plant is essentially that shell without the harmful insides.“If you give that to someone as a vaccine, it looks just like the real virus, but there is nothing on the inside,” said Diamos. “It can't cause disease; it can't actually infect you.”That's what makes these plant-based vaccines safe and effective.“One of the main reasons why we're focusing on plants is because they're so cheap to work with. These vaccines will hopefully be much cheaper to produce than traditional methods,” said Diamos.Many discoveries from ASU researchers hit the market, this one could too, but it needs further study and would eventually need to be picked up by a pharmaceutical company which could take years. 2154

TAMPA, Fla. — Several areas of Tampa Bay are assessing the damage left behind from a squall of storms that produced tornadoes on both sides of Tampa Bay.At least three tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Polk Counties.The NWS believes there were tornadoes in Pinellas Park, along the Howard Frankland Bridge and near Kathleen.The National Weather Service said at 4:08 p.m., a “confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado” was located over the Howard Frankland Bridge, southwest of Tampa. It was moving northeast at 35 mph.Pinellas Park Police say at least 25 structures were damaged by the storm.
