Ten-year-old D'Mya Newton was ecstatic when she found out she'd be able to play basketball this summer."She was in the garage all day just putting up shots," said Brittney English, D'Mya's mom. However, after playing several games in mid-June in a suburb of Kansas City, she began to feel sick."Once we took her to the hospital, they gave her an IV of saline solution and Motrin," English said. Her mom said Newton has some health issues, and wanted to take her to the hospital as her fever rose.Days later, doctors told English her daughter tested positive for COVID-19.41 Action News spoke with English over Zoom as the family is in quarantine. She said she believes her daughter got the virus from the KC Premiere Basketball tournament."She was feeling fine before we attended the basketball game on Sunday," English said. "She is the one that is always cleaning her hands, washing her hands and using the hand sanitizer."The Platte County Health Department said it alerted families that had close contact with the player who tested positive. The department also said it worked with the tournament director to conduct contact tracing. The director said four teams were alerted within hours of knowing about the positive COVID-19 case.Doctors said it is dangerous when parents send their kids back to the court."They are absolutely putting their kids at risk. You have to weigh the risk versus the benefit. The benefit is up to the parent and up to the kid," said Dr. Simon Clark, an emergency physician at Overland Park Regional. "Of course they want to get back to action and sports. The risk is definitely there."A question many parents have is if they should let their kids play or keep them at home."I can't really advise whether or not it's a good idea. I think the risk is there. I kind of have to defer to the local health department's experts. I can just say the risk is there," Clark said.D'Mya's mom wants parents to take extra precautions when letting kids go back to playing their favorite sport."Just looking at the signs when they come home. If they are tired, if they are fatigued or anything like that, just be aware," English said.D'Mya lives in Wyandotte County, Kansas. The health department there said it was also taking community precautions."I can tell you that public health officials have conducted contact tracing with any close contacts of the person who initially developed symptoms and tested positive, and have been in touch with the team directors/coaches to advise their players on self-quarantine procedures and monitoring for symptoms," said Janell Friesen, spokesperson for the Wyandotte County Health Department.Several health departments around the area said they are not seeing COVID-19 outbreaks in children from playing sports. In Johnson County, a few Shawnee Mission East athletes tested positive for the virus last week.A spokesperson with the school said they have no information that would indicate that their diagnoses were related to playing sports at the school.KC Premiere has listed the precautions being taken due to COVID-19 on its website. This story originally reported by Jordan Betts on kshb.com. 3158

TAMPA, Fla. -- The fight against COVID-19 is taking off in a new direction: it’s headed for the friendly skies.“We wanted to be able to instill confidence in the traveling public that, in fact, it is safe to travel,” said John Tiliacos, vice president of airport operations and customer service at Tampa International Airport.Tucked away in a corner of the main terminal at the airport sits a coronavirus testing center. This month, Tampa’s airport became the first in the country to offer two types of COVID-19 tests to the flying public. The tests are administered by medical personnel from BayCare Health System.“There's a lot of people who are asymptomatic carriers and we don't want to invariably go and expose a loved one or a family member,” said Dr. Nishant Anand, Chief Medical Officer for BayCare Health System. While the tests are required for people traveling to certain international destinations, it can also benefit people traveling within the U.S., by helping them avoid a 14-day quarantine in certain states, if they test negative for the virus.“Me and three other girlfriends are going on the girl's trip,” said Aneesah Rashad, who is celebrating her birthday with a vacation.Rashad is heading to Puerto Rico and needed a COVID test to do so.“It's required in order for you to go to enter into San Juan within 72 hours prior to your travel day,” Rashad said. “I've been tested several times, just to make sure, because I do care about my health and it's important to me.”The two tests offered include the , rapid coronavirus antigen test, which offers test results in 15 minutes. There is also the more accurate, 5 PCR test – which uses a nasal swab – with results within two days. Both tests are covered by most insurance.“Heaven forbid, if someone does test positive, we tell them to go home and quarantine,” Dr. Anand said. “We tell them what the results are. We then are obligated by law to notify the Department of Health for Hillsborough County, which is a county that we're in.”Even some airlines, like United, American, Jetblue and Hawaiian, are now offering COVID testing before certain flights.Earlier this year, passenger numbers cratered at airports across the country, down more than 90% in Tampa alone.“[It’s] the worst impact that we've seen to travel,” Tiliacos said. However, the number of people flying is starting to tick back up heading into the holiday season. The coronavirus testing center is open at a time when it could become vital.“We hope that other airports replicate this,” Tiliacos said.Since Tampa International Airport opened their testing site, several others have followed suit, including in Oakland, Boston and New York. 2686

TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chaos erupted in the middle of a youth soccer tournament in Temecula Sunday evening after reports that someone allegedly pulled out a gun during a confrontation with other spectators, witnesses and the CEO of the tournament told 10News.10News has learned that one of the teams is from Chula Vista. The incident happened at the Albion Development Showcase tournament at Galway Downs in Temecula, witnesses told 10News.Players from opposing teams began shoving each other during one of the finals matches, one parent said. A family member then stepped onto the field and punched one of the players."There was a lot of fouls going on and I could see it was heating up," spectator Robert Hernandez said. "So one of the brothers from the Albion team rushed onto the field and just cold-cocked one of the other opposing players and this kid was about three years older."Hernandez said the breach onto the field incited more than a dozen men to join in, creating a brawl. He said, at one point, a man walked away from the scrum and grabbed a camouflage backpack.RELATED: Parent speaks about violent confrontation at Temecula soccer tournament"The entire field was just rushing out to the sidelines, kids were running, crying, parents were pulling their kids, dragging them," spectator Robert Hernandez said. He was on the sidelines waiting for his niece to play in the finals.Word of the melee quickly spread across multiple fields where teams, ages 8 to 15 years old, began sprinting off the fields."Someone's telling him don't do it, don't do it... They're right in front of us and we're like what's going on? And we're like this guy must have a weapon," he said. The same thought echoed through the crowd, inciting screams and sending kids running. The father of the player that was punched to the ground told 10News that the boy is a 10-year-old from Otay Ranch. He says the spectator that ran onto the field and struck his son is from the Los Angeles-based Azteca Soccer Club, not the Chula Vista Albion team. The father said his son sustained a minor head injury as a result of the attack. He described the assailant as being a possible teenager.Referee Alex Hansen was on another field and saw the stampede. "At first, I thought it was actually a bee swarm and so I thought we were going to hit the deck or something, but everyone kept saying, 'Shooter! Shooter! Run!' So we just had to run to the parking lot," Hansen said.He was immediately concerned about his 15-year-old brother who was refereeing near the commotion. He found out later his brother and players were hiding in a neighbor's garage. He said the kids were distraught, crying and asking for their parents. Witness accounts on social media reported that some players were temporarily separated from their parents causing more alarm. One of the players at the tournament, Luis Cruz, from Los Angeles, was on the field about 10 minutes into his championship match when the commotion began. He told 10News he was playing a few fields away but was able to hear the screams and saw people running. That's when he ran for safety."Everyone screamed 'run' and our coaches told us to just run and jump," he told 10News. "We all did and ended up on the other side of the fence huddled in the bushes with our coach and the team we were playing against.Hernandez said he never saw a weapon, but the man was detained by Temecula Sheriff's Deputies for a short time. The CEO of the Albion Development Showcase, Noah Gins, said the person that breached the field was a brother of the opposing team from Los Angeles who hit the Albion player.Gins said deputies never found a weapon and in his 40 years of experience he's never seen anything like this. He said he spoke with California State Soccer Association South and wants stronger consequences for anyone who goes onto the field to discourage this kind of behavior.Hernandez, a former coach, hopes parents reel in their enthusiasm at games, "Some of these parents get really emotional, they need to know it's just a game. They're out there to support their kids, their family member."Temecula Police Department officials are still investigating the incident. Calls to the agency have not been returned at this time. 4253

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida father died after his ambulance broke down and it took nearly an hour to get him to the hospital. WFTS uncovered that this failure is part of a record of repair problems and an even bigger problem putting the public at risk. When Richard Bateman, a 50-year-old father who traveled the world playing with heavy metal bands, collapsed in his living room on September 5, his wife, Amy Bateman, called 911.A Tampa Fire Rescue engine and ambulance arrived within minutes. But when they tried to drive him to the hospital, the ambulance would not start. The crew called for a backup rescue truck. The second ambulance arrived nearly 40 minutes after the first 911 call.“It was heart-wrenching,” Amy Bateman said. “It was horrible.”The ride to the hospital took 11 minutes. Moments after arrival, Richard Bateman was pronounced dead of a heart attack.“If that first ambulance wouldn’t have died, he might not have died,” said Amy Bateman.Records show: 989
