BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Meteorological Station warned Sunday that rainstorms would again batter many provinces and regions in the coming days bringing with it bigger risks of new flooding and other geological disasters in central and eastern China. From Monday until Wednesday, the observatory forecast some regions in provinces including Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and Anhui will see heavy rain.Eastern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, central Henan, Chongqing and Shanghai will also see rainstorms during the next three days.A total of 14.92 million people in 10 provinces and regions along China's longest river, the Yangtze, have had their lives disrupted after torrential rains began pounding since July 8, a statement from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) said Sunday.Rain-triggered floods also brought damage to 806,000 hectares of farmland and destroyed 20,000 houses, with direct economic losses standing at 8.6 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars), a statement from the flood control authority said.Official figures showed during the 10 days ended on Saturday, at least 50 people were confirmed dead and 15 others were still missing in 9 provinces after heavy rains.Rain-triggered floods have left 14 people dead and three others missing in Chongqing Municipality since Thursday, toppling more than 3,000 houses, partly cutting off power supply and causing the evacuation of 80,400 people, according to the local government. The floods have affected the lives of more than 1.7 million people in 17 districts and counties there, incurring 1.34 billion yuan in direct economic losses, Chongqing's flood-control and drought-relief headquarters said.In Hubei Province, 17 people were killed and three others missing amid downpours since July 3, which affected the lives of more than 5.63 million people in 75 counties across the province, Hubei's Civil Affairs Administration said Sunday.More than 182,500 residents had been relocated after heavy rains damaged more than 71,000 houses, inundated 537,650 hectares of farmland, cutting off many road services and suspended power supply. In Jiangxi Province, more than 34,000 people have been evacuated since July 5 when downpours began to hit 22 counties, pulling down more than 2,400 houses. So far 620,000 people from five provinces in eastern and central China have been evacuated from flood-hit areas as soldiers from the People's Liberation Army and armed police forces mobilize to fight the floods.Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources, also SFDH vice director, said at a work meeting Sunday that local authorities should come up with detailed plans for flood control to minimize losses caused by the disaster.A total of 8 work teams sent by SFDH are also helping with flood control work in provinces along the Yangtze and in northwest China's Qinghai Province, where thousands of people were evacuated Sunday from Golmud City as a risky reservoir nearby was on the verge of breaching after heavy rain. But the water level of the reservoir has begun easing, the SFDH said, as temporary channels had been dug to divert water.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged at a work conference Saturday relevant departments to closely monitor the weather and issue alerts promptly, reinforce dams and dikes as well as resettle people affected by the floods.Meteorological experts warned cities should be on alert against water logging while mountainous areas should be wary of mud flows and landslides triggered by heavy rains.

GENEVA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator reiterated his country's support for the UN's core role in international affairs and calls for an accelerated process of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) during a meeting Monday with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), said China believes the United Nations can play a key role in world affairs. He said China has cooperated well with the organization and it will fulfill its obligations and responsibility while firmly supporting the objectives and principles of the UN charter.Wu Bangguo (L), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), meets with Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon in Geneva, Switzerland, July 19, 2010.Wu said the UN MDGs have gained positive achievement since their adoption in 2000. However, he said, the world is facing more pressing and difficult missions to materialize the millennium goals due to the global financial crisis. That, he said, requires the international community to work even harder.Wu said both the ongoing Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and the UN summit on MDGs set for September in New York have listed UN MDGs on their agendas, showing international consensus on the issue.Ban said China is playing an ever important role in international affairs and the United Nations expects to conduct deeper cooperation with China. He also said the third world parliament speakers summit was very significant as the UN needs supports from both the executive and legislative bodies of its member states.

URUMQI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A group of 192 Chinese workers and engineers, who had been trapped and later rescued in flood- hit Pakistan's northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, returned home at 8:24 p.m.Saturday on a charter flight. The plane took them to Urumqi, northwest China' s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and after a brief stay, they will fly to their home towns in central China's Henan Province, east China's Shandong Province and southwest China's Sichuan Province."I feel safe coming back home," Feng Yong, an engineer said at the Urumqi airport.Chinese workers and engineers walk out of a chartered plane at the airport in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Aug. 7, 2010. The first batch of 192 Chinese workers and engineers, who had once been trapped and rescued in flood-hit Pakistan's northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, returned to China Saturday. A total of 268 Chinese workers and engineers working at a hydro-power station project in the Patan area of Kohistan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were trapped on a mountain as a huge landslide, triggered by floods and torrential rains, washed across their work site on July 29.All 265 people were safely evacuated, except for three workers who went missing.Fourteen Chinese engineers are still taking care of the flood-ravaged project site while the remaining 59 workers are waiting for other arrangements in Islamabad.

BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and South Africa announced a "comprehensive strategic partnership" on Tuesday during South African President Jacob Zuma's first state visit to China.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Zuma signed the Beijing Declaration after their one-hour talk in the Great Hall of the People Tuesday afternoon, during which the two presidents praised the growth of bilateral ties and agreed to lift relations to new heights."In this new spirit of China-South Africa relations, we will work together to advance the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership," Hu told Zuma.Hu made specific proposals that the two countries maintain close contacts between leaders, utilize cooperative mechanism to further implement bilateral cooperation documents and strengthen exchanges between ruling parties and legislatures. In the economic area, Hu hoped both sides would promote trade and investment growth, energy cooperation and optimize financial services.China and South Africa need to work together in culture, education, media, health and tourism, Hu said, bolstering more academic and research cooperation. On the multilateral front, the countries need to improve consultation and coordination to further South-to-South cooperation and tackle global challenges.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus would likely fall noticeably this year as exports outlook would not be optimistic while imports would remain robust, Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said at a briefing Saturday.Exports growth would slow after July, Yao forecast, adding the surge in exports in May was due to a low comparison basis last year. China's exports in May surged 48.5 percent year on year, customs data released Thursday.China's trade surplus in the first five months fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars. The figure in 2009 topped 196.07 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.2 percent year on year.Yao attributed the weak export outlook to the European sovereign debt crisis, rising commodity prices and labor costs."In the following months, the fallout from the debt crisis in Europe would gradually become apparent, and China would closely watch changes in its important exports markets including Germany, Spain and Italy," Yao said.China would maintain stable trade policies amid the crisis, and might adjust some policies in some specific industries for environmental protection purposes."Stable trade policies are a top priority when the external outlook is not clear," he said.Yao also told reporters that attempts by some U.S. lawmakers to include China's exchange rate policy into trade investigations on China's exports of aluminum extrusions and coated paper lacked factual support and did not conform to rules of the World Trade Organization. The WTO regulated trade policies instead of a country's overall financial or foreign exchange policies, he said.
