CLEVELAND — Sex toys, envelopes and craft supplies are among the products Ohio workers say their companies continue to make or distribute under the protection of being so-called "essential employers" as most businesses across the state have shut down during the Coronavirus outbreak.Workers are raising concerns about their health and safety and remain skeptical whether employers are finding loopholes during Ohio's stay at home order issued by Gov. DeWine requiring non-essential businesses to close as of Monday night."I'm afraid of being fired if I don't come to work," said one employee at AmeriMark, a Cleveland-based direct marketer of women's apparel, shoes, cosmetics and health related merchandise --including more than 30 sex toys included in its "health living essentials."The company also distributes wrist blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, glucose monitors and wheelchairs. The Ohio Department of Health's "Stay at Home Order" specifically includes "distributors of medical equipment."In a recorded message to its employees, workers are being told, "We are happy to report AmeriMark will remain in operation during this period...in this unparalleled time, we are excited to serve AmeriMark customers."The company has not yet responded to our inquiry."My concern is that there are a lot of elderly women working here," said another worker concerned about passing the virus from person to person.The State's StanceDuring Tuesday's news conference, Lt. Governor Jon Husted acknowledged confusion over the definition of an "essential business" and referred employers to Ohio's coronavirus website."It's written in plain language, we ask you to follow the language and use your best judgment," said Husted. "Please don't call law enforcement and ask them to interpret it for you."Lt. Governor Jon Husted"You don’t need a letter, certification or clearance. You do need to have a rationale about how the order applies to you," said Husted. "We make one type of envelope for the postal service--I'm afraid of losing my job if I don't show up."A news release issued by by the company on March 17, said "precautionary measures have been put in place at both our office and manufacturing facilities as we continue to operate in our regular course of business."Cenveo, based in Stamford, Connecticut, identifies itself as a "world leader in the management of print and related offerings" and has not yet responded to our inquiry.Essential Crafting?Even craft stores, like Michaels and Joann Fabric and Craft Stores continue to remain open despite health concerns among employees."Crafting is non-essential," said one Michaels employee. "Are they above the rules?"A company release addressing the COVID-19 outbreak said "we are taking precautionary measures to ensure our corporate offices, stores, distribution centers and other facilities minimize the risk."In a message to Joann customers, the company said "now more than ever it is important to safely provide what these Americans need to support their livelihood, mental wellness and community giving."Among those items, the company is encouraging customers to help make "protective non-surgical masks and gowns during this critical time."The company adds that it is "taking action to ensure we are protecting our facilities, customers and teams across the nation."Ask Sherwin WilliamsA worker at a Sherwin Williams paint plant in Massillon asks, "Since when is bodyfiller and paint essential? Cottonwood, Arizona police have arrested a 32-year-old woman in what they call, "One of the worst cases of neglect some of the officers involved have ever seen."Sarah Easterday-Shortridge faces several charges in connection with the crime. On the morning of March 10, the Verde Valley Regional SWAT team served a search warrant at a home.Officers were made aware of the residence after a person received medical treatment from being pistol-whipped by a man staying at the home the night before. Police say officers found Easterday-Shortridge's three children, all under the age of five, living in "deplorable conditions." The abandoned home reportedly had feces, trash, debris, broken glass, and rotting food throughout. Officers described the residence as a "flop-house" for drug users.The children were transported to a medical center where they received treatment and hygiene. Police say the kids were suffering from lice, open sores, scabies, bumps, and were covered in feces. The Department of Child Safety was called to the scene and the children were removed from Easterday-Shortridge’s custody, police said. She has been charged with several felonies including child abuse, endangerment, neglect or abuse of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia.   1326

COACHELLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Another puppy was discovered in a dumpster at Coachella just weeks after a woman was arrested for reportedly leaving seven puppies in a trash can. According to the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, the puppy was found badly beaten and burned in a dumpster on the 49000 block of Harrison Street around 1 p.m. on May 5. Someone digging through the trash heard the puppy crying and took her to a nearby jewelry store, where she was rushed to an animal hospital. RELATED: Woman arrested after puppies dumped in trash can at Coachella“It appears as if she was burned with a caustic substance, or a metal object like an iron,” the foundation said. The weeks-old puppy also had a portion of her tail cut off and can’t walk due to being beaten. The puppy, whose name is Hope, is currently in intensive care and being monitored 24 hours a day. The foundation is offering a ,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the person responsible. The incident comes after a woman identified as Deborah Sue Culwell, 54, was arrested for reportedly dumping seven puppies in a dumpster at Coachella. The puppies were only about three weeks old. A good Samaritan was able to rescue the puppies, saving their lives. 1246

CITRUS COUNTY, Florida — A woman was attacked by an alligator on Wednesday while she was swimming in a lake in Citrus County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.The FWC says 24-year-old Felicitie Marie Gillette was swimming in Lake Hernando around 1 a.m. when an alligator grabbed her by the left arm and began to drag her underwater. She was reportedly able to fight off the alligator and call 911 for help.Gillette was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital for treatment of her injuries. According to the FWC, she was treated and released. She sustained non-life threatening injuries.The alligator is believed to 5 to 6-feet long.The FWC and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office are working to catch the alligator. A trapper has also been called to the scene.The public beach access to Lake Hernando is closed while a wildlife trapper searches for the alligator.Families who visit the lake say they've seen an alligator swim along the beach's public access area."The alligator was on the hunt," said Dennis Weis. "You could tell by the aggressive movements by the alligator."Dennis Weis shared cell phone video with ABC Action News showing an alligator roaming in the water near the beach, just a few days before the attack. COVINGTON, Ky. — Holy Cross High School's graduating valedictorian and student council president learned hours before Friday night's graduation that they would not be allowed to deliver their planned — and, they thought, pre-approved — speeches at the ceremony.They found a pair of megaphones and delivered them outside. "The young people will win," valedictorian Christian Bales said, "because we're finished being complacent."The 18-year-old from Cold Spring, Kentucky had hoped to celebrate the rising tide of American youth advocacy across the political spectrum, mentioning both the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who have campaigned for reformed gun laws and his own classmates who had attended the March for Life in January, and encourage his classmates to continue striving to make their communities better."We are dynamic, we are intelligent, we have a voice, and we're capable of using it in all communities," he said in his speech. "We must take what we've learned in this community and apply it to the world we are about to encounter."Bales' mother, Gillian Marksberry, said Bales and student council president Katherine Frantz had believed their speeches were approved before an "out-of-the-blue" Friday morning call from Principal Mike Holtz to both their families. Holtz held an "emergency meeting" that ended in a declaration the diocese did not feel the two speeches were appropriate for the ceremony, Marksberry said.Holtz related to her that the diocese characterized them as "aggressive, angry, confrontational" and too personal for the graduation stage. "I can send you a copy of my speech," Bales wrote in a Twitter message. "It's anything but those things. … The irony is that my speech has a lot to do with voices, but our voices are being stifled."He added he believed he and Frantz had been treated with undue scrutiny because of their advocacy for issues of social justice. Bales is openly gay and has participated in youth activism surrounding issues such as the Jefferson Davis statue in the Kentucky Capitol building. "The president is my best friend and we've been two huge advocates for social reform in our community, which has likely put us on the radar for the diocese," he said.Marksberry described her family's experience — as anxiety-inducing and hectic as that of any family preparing for a graduation, plus the Friday morning bombshell — as "shocking" and "very, very emotional." Her daughter had attended and graduated from Holy Cross years earlier without incident, she said, and their family was a longtime part of the diocese. During all that time, the principal had never called her personally to discuss her children until the week of Bales' graduation.The first call, she said, was about the dress code. Bales describes himself as "very gender-nonconforming," so Holtz reminded Marksberry that diocesan officials would expect him to wear slacks, formal shoes, a conservative hairstyle and no makeup.That was uncomfortable — "You've never called me about my child, but you're calling someone else who doesn't know my child about my child?" she said — but Marksberry understood. The next call was about Bales' speech. Initially, she said school and diocese officials claimed to be rejecting the two speeches because Frantz and Bales had failed to meet a deadline. When she told them the students had never been given a formal deadline, the speeches' content rose to the top of the concern list."School officials and representatives of the Diocese of Covington reserve the right to review and approve all student speeches to be presented in public at high school graduations," diocese spokesman Tim Fitzgerald said Friday night. "When the proposed speeches were received, they were found to contain elements that were political and inconsistent with the teaching of the Catholic Church."He repeated that the students had failed to meet a deadline to turn their speeches in to faculty. Holy Cross principal Mike Holtz and district superintendent Michael Clines did not respond to requests for comment. Bales and Frantz delivered their speeches outside, through megaphones, after the ceremony. Marksberry said the general staff of Holy Cross High School had been supportive of her son and found ways to "help him embrace himself," and she did not bear the district any ill will. "We don't want to be vindictive, we don't want to be vengeful," she said. "That's not what this is about. He's earned the right to have a voice."Bishop Roger Foys, who oversees the Diocese of Covington and who typically distributes awards at Catholic schools' graduations, did not attend the ceremony. His seat stood empty on the graduation stage.Bales will attend the University of Louisville on a full-ride scholarship in the fall.
