SWANTON, Ohio - An Ohio father's message about bullying has gone viral. Matt Cox's daughter was suspended from riding the school bus on Nov. 30 due to bullying. Cox said his daughter told him that he had to drive her to school the following week, but he decided to teach her lesson instead. "I realized she viewed the privilege of riding the bus and or car rides to and from school as a right and not a privilege," Cox said. On Monday, Cox made his daughter walk to school and posted a video on Facebook saying, "Life lessons."In the video, Cox said a lot of children today feel that the things their parents do for them are a right and not a privilege. Cox said his daughter was upset when she first started walking on Monday.During the walk, Cox talked to his daughter about how her actions were the reason she was walking. He said by the end of the walk she calmed down and realized that if she hadn't bullied others she would still be on the bus. The video has been shared more than 200,000 times. Cox said he was shocked when he found out the video went viral. "I was in complete shock that so many people responded when I originally posted it. I just thought friends and family would see it, and then a friend asked me to make it public so that they could share it," Cox said. "By the time I woke up the next day I had hundreds of messages in my inbox and saw that there were quite a few views."Cox said he sat down with his children to show them the comments on the video so that they could understand the effects of bullying. "She, along with my other two children, seem to show a great deal of empathy towards some of the sad stories that I read with them," Cox said. He believes his daughter learned her lesson about bullying and will now appreciate the bus ride to school.Cox hopes that when others view the video, they will learn just how much words can hurt others. "I just hope that through the video being shared kids can take a look and read some of the comments and tutorials on the post and see just how much words can hurt and cut deep and can have lasting effects on those involved sometimes in the most awful cases life-ending effects," Cox said. "I also hope that parents see the video and start holding their kids accountable for their actions and stop sweeping their child's actions under the rug with the ideology that kids will be kids. We as parents need to stop the bullying on the home front because bullying only breeds bullying," Cox said.  2579

TEMPE, Ariz. — It's a huge breakthrough for the highly contagious and deadly norovirus as researchers at the Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute have come up with a vaccine made from plants.The norovirus is known as the perfect human pathogen. It can have you feeling awful for days, but researchers at ASU say a form of the tobacco plant may be the key to a vaccine.Also known as the cruise ship illness, norovirus hits nearly 20 million Americans every year. According to Andy Diamos, a post-doctoral researcher at ASU, the average person has the stomach bug five times in their life.“Norovirus is a horrible bug to get,” said Diamos. “It causes vomiting, diarrhea, all sorts of nasty stuff.”There is no vaccine for the highly contagious bug because it's notoriously difficult to produce in a lab, until now, thanks to Diamos and Hugh Mason with the Biodesign Center.“Genetic engineering has allowed us to design systems like plants to produce useful things like vaccines,” said Diamos.By using a form of the tobacco plant, researchers discovered that a harmless bacteria would help grow a norovirus vaccine when the proper genes are transferred to the leaves.“You can basically put in whatever genes you want and transfer those to the plant, so that's how we get the plant to make the vaccine,” said Diamos.According to Diamos, real viruses are surrounded by a shell that protects its genes. The vaccine that grows inside the tobacco plant is essentially that shell without the harmful insides.“If you give that to someone as a vaccine, it looks just like the real virus, but there is nothing on the inside,” said Diamos. “It can't cause disease; it can't actually infect you.”That's what makes these plant-based vaccines safe and effective.“One of the main reasons why we're focusing on plants is because they're so cheap to work with. These vaccines will hopefully be much cheaper to produce than traditional methods,” said Diamos.Many discoveries from ASU researchers hit the market, this one could too, but it needs further study and would eventually need to be picked up by a pharmaceutical company which could take years. 2154

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Much like the rest of the country, unemployment rates skyrocketed in Florida at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while the Florida unemployment rate has fallen somewhat to 7.6%, many in the state are still in need of help and may get it through a program called EB or Extended Benefits.In October alone, more than 10,000 people applied for unemployment in the Tampa Bar area — including 7,338 in Hillsborough County and 3,799 in Pinellas County."We continue to see unemployment problems within our office; it's mostly coupled with eviction notices," said State Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat whose district covers the Orlando area.Eskamani has fielded calls from Florida's unemployed since March."We need political back-and-forth to stop. The American people are in desperate need of relief," she said.The regular 12 weeks of benefits for those unemployed only lasted until about mid-June. That's when many applied for PEUC, a 13-week extension that took extended benefits to about mid-September.With the state's unemployment rate remaining above 5% for as long as it has, regular unemployment benefits were extended but haven't been made available yet."They're trying to integrate it into the connect system, which is why they're saying December it's going to be available," Eskamani said.In order for Floridians to get extended benefits — or EB — their PEUC benefits must have been used up between June 7 and Nov. 7."I actually think the gap that's being sent by the US Department of Labor catches most people," Eskamani said.It could, however, have an impact on Disney World employees, many of whom were furloughed or laid off amid an extended park closure. What happens for others seeking unemployment in 2021 is still unclear.Eskamani says that by then, the state legislature should officially be able to file a bill that she and other lawmakers drafted in October, hoping to get claimants more money for a longer period of time."(I want to) increase the benefit amount to 0 — change the sliding scale of what's available to us at the limit of 26 weeks, which is the national average," she said. STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Hig Roberts, a decorated Alpine skier, has come out as gay.The two-time U.S. national champion joins a small group of LGBTQ skiers who have come out publicly in a sport that The New York Times describes as “closed and clubby.” That includes freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, who revealed he is gay on ESPN in 2015.This makes the 29-year-old the first current or former male Alpine skier of his caliber to come out publicly in Alpine skiing, The Times reports.In an interview with The Times, Roberts said Alpine skiing has a hyper-masculine vibe and he was pressured to conform. He said that eventually, not being able to be openly gay as a professional athlete was hindering his performance.Roberts, who grew up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, retired from skiing in March 2019 and moved to Norway to work in finance, but has since moved back to the U.S.He told The Times that he decided to come out in part to inspire young skiers and to let them know they can compete at the highest levels no matter their sexuality.Throughout his career, Roberts made 31 World Cup starts, competed for the U.S. Ski team and won two national titles. He never got the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, but he was the first alternate in the 2018 Pyeongchang, according to Out Magazine.Still, Roberts told the magazine that he hopes to get involved with Olympic athletes in the future to foster spaces where athletes are comfortable to be themselves, while still working to be the best in their sports. 1522
