The topics to be discussed during the first presidential debate next week include “the integrity of the election,” according to the official list released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.President Donald Trump and Former Vice President Joe Biden will face-off for the first time on September 29 in Cleveland. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has released the 27 titles that are on its 2020-21 Great Words, Great Works booklist.The list of books is for students that span from first to eighth grade and will help students prep for their annual school spelling bee with a list of 450 words that are on the School Spelling Bee Study List each year."Parents and teachers are always looking (especially during the summer) for reading suggestions for kids," The Scripps National Spelling Bee said. "The Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes the important connection between reading and spelling. Before our competitors were great spellers, they were great readers. With that in mind, the Bee team intentionally selected its school-level spelling study words from engaging, age-appropriate books. The Bee organized those titles into the Great Words, Great Works book list. This year, students can expand their vocabularies and their world views while hearing from a diverse cast of characters on topics such as climate change, homelessness, immigration, gender identity, and the power of dreaming. The U.S. has carried out the first federal execution in nearly two decades, putting to death a man who was convicted of killing an Arkansas family in the 1990s in a plot to build a whites-only nation in the Pacific Northwest. Forty-seven-year-old Daniel Lewis Lee, of Yukon, Oklahoma, died Tuesday after receiving a lethal injection at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. Lee said before his execution that he was innocent. “I didn’t do it,” Lee said just before he was executed. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but I’m not a murderer. ... The Stallion Springs, California Police Department is warning the public about a cell phone "spoofing" scam that's going around asking for personal information. The spoofing scam appears to look like a legitimate phone call as the caller ID is displayed as the victim's own cellphone number.A voice recording identifies the call is coming from AT&T, and advises the victim that their cellphone account has been compromised and they may be a victim of fraud. The voice recording then asks for the victim to confirm their personal information, specifically asking for the last four digits of their social security number.AT&T confirmed to Stallion Springs Police that this is a phone scam. Police advise that if you receive calls like this, to not answer them. If you do answer, do not give out your personal information. Hang up and call your phone company asking about the legitimacy of the scam or call police. Report spoofing at www.IC3.gov. 989

The U.S. has now seen two straight weeks in which at least 100,000 people are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 each day.On Monday, the U.S. reported 166,000 new cases of the virus, marking the 14th consecutive day with 100,000 or more new cases of the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.The last day new cases totaled less than 100,000 was on Nov. 2. Since then, about 1.9 million Americans have contracted the virus, the rolling 7-day average of hospitalizations across the country has increased from 50,000 to 65,000 and daily deaths on a rolling 7-day average have ticked up from 824 a day to 1,114 a day.That 14-day time span has also seen seven days in which record numbers of new cases were reported. The current record was set on Friday when 177,000 people in the U.S. were confirmed to have contracted COVID-19.The current spike in caseloads has led hospitals across the country to become inundated with patients, overwhelming resources. The COVID Tracking Project reports that most of those hospitalizations are occurring in the Midwest, where rural hospitals in places like Iowa and South Dakota are running short on bed space.The current standard was predicted in June by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's highest-ranking infectious disease expert. During a Senate hearing, Fauci stunned lawmakers by predicting that the U.S. could reach a point where 100,000 people were being infected each day if "disturbing trends" continued.Fauci's comments in June came during a summer spike in cases which saw infection rates top out at about 77,000 new cases each day.The current spike in cases comes as drugmakers like Pfizer and Moderna have reported encouraging results in vaccine trial results. While both vaccine candidates are on track for Emergency Use Authorization by the end of 2020, the drug likely won't be widely available to the general public for several months — Fauci has predicted that a vaccine will be widely available in the U.S. by April. 2002
