SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Choir members in San Diego have made it their mission to use music to bring comfort to people nearing the end of their lives.Threshold Choir's director, Nadean Burington, started the local chapter in 2011.  It is an a cappella choir that sings for and with those at the thresholds of life.  They sing at the bedside at San Diego hospices, institutions, and private homes.Recently, doctors diagnosed Burington with stage four cancer. She has recently started requesting the choir's services.“It's wonderful. It's a gift back to me now for what I've given to help start it,” Burington said. “I feel well at this point but I want to the music continue for as long as possible.”Burington says the next directors have been picked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla, who last week announced he contracted coronavirus, has been hospitalized at UCSD Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, his family announced Thursday.Ashleigh Padilla, Padilla's daughter, said her father "was admitted to UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU where he is receiving additional treatment, including a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19."“I know his amazing doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to send him home healthy when this is all over," said Ashleigh Padilla.No further details about his condition were given at this time, but Padilla did issue a warning to the public through his daughter.“My father asked me to pass on a message: Everyone needs to take COVID-19 seriously. Please follow the advice of our public health professionals to reduce spread of the virus and take precautions to keep your families and our community safe," said Ashleigh Padilla.Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, made the announcement in video last Saturday that was published on his Facebook page."After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said last Saturday.Padilla appeared in the video to be in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well."In a follow up statement later that night, he described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bagging vegetables, opening boxes, organizing volunteers.Every month the parking lot at Unity Church in City Heights becomes a mini grocery store."Without this service a lot of people wouldn't even have a plate on the table to be able to say I had my meal today," said Chanae Jackson.Jackson started this food distribution several years back, partnering with Feeding San Diego to make it possible.She also found others who wanted to give back, including her friend Dede Jackson."You have hungry babies at home these places help they help they help feed your family," Jackson explained.Both women know how appreciated the groceries are because in addition to volunteering, they also take home food.They tell ABC 10News there's always been people lining up, but since COVID-19 hit, those lines have grown. Every month they serve roughly 70-100 people.Anyone can get food, no questions asked; they only need to be at least 18 years old. 960
