SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teen in San Diego has written a children's book, which she hopes can help in the fight against cancer.Sophia Namazy, 14, wrote "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairytales" after seeing her little sister wake up every morning with messy hair. In the book, a pair of fairies come at night and play with it. Sophia says it's loosely based on her sister, Poppy."Her hair was really crazy and frizzy in the morning," says Sophia. "So every morning it would be like that, and I would sketch about it. And I thought I might as well make it into a book."Now that it's published, she's decided to donate all the money from sales to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.Namazy picked that location because it's where her twin brother, Max, goes every year for treatment.Max has a rare blood disorder called Schwachman-Diamond syndrome. His body doesn't produce enough white blood cells."I want other kids to know they're not alone, and they're not going through this alone," Sophia says."I'm really proud of Sophia, writing a book," says Max. "It just makes me happy that she's writing a book for me, to me, and helping support the cancer institute."Their mother, Jennifer Namazy, says the book has helped the family support each other."It's very emotional, but it really helps us all think about how a medical disorder in a family can affect everybody," she says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego nonprofit is hoping to tackle the homeless crisis with a creative solution.The nonprofit, Amikas, envisions a San Diego where every woman and child has a safe place to live in.They hope to build emergency sleeping cabins, which could temporarily house homeless women and children as they look for a permanent place to live. "They're small, they're immediate, they go up in a matter of days, and so we can house a lot of people very quickly with this solution," said Shanna Welsh-Levin, President of Amikas.Designed by San Diego-based Treecycling, the homes are inexpensive and can be built within 24 hours. The cabins are mobile, able to be dismantled within a few hours. "We built these things like houses so they feel like homes," said Gabriel Stafford, with Treecyling. The house built this week is on display at the Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon. The ultimate goal would be to run a two-year pilot program, creating an emergency cabin village to test the idea. Welsh-Levin is inviting city leaders and the community to come to learn more about the effort. 1105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A street in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is shutting down starting Thursday for bars, restaurants and other businesses to create more space for customers.From Thursday to Saturday, Fifth Avenue will be closed between G and L streets as a way to help break up potential overcrowding as downtown businesses reopen.The street closure will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, with “Curbside Gaslamp” running from 3 p.m.-12 a.m. on both days. 469

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested by Border Patrol agents after they reportedly discovered drugs hidden inside her child’s car seat and stroller.Agents say they stopped a 2015 Nissan Sentra at an unspecified location along Interstate 15 on June 12 around 6:15 p.m. The vehicle was driven by a 26-year-old male US citizen. Two women and three minor children were also in the vehicle. After searching the vehicle using a K-9, agents found several packages of drugs wrapped in cellophane and hidden inside one of the children’s car seat and stroller. Border Patrol says a child was sitting in the car seat when the drugs were found. The 23 packages contained methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin valued at 1,680, the agency says. Agents later discovered that the drugs were hidden by one of the female passengers, a 26-year-old US citizen. The woman was arrested and turned over to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office while the three minor children were released into the custody of their 32-year-old aunt. 1023
