There's a simple thing many of us having been missing during the pandemic that has a big impact on our health and well-being — hugs from our loved ones.A neuroscientist tells us many are dealing with what researchers call "skin hunger." It's a phenomenon where we can feel emotionally lost of something without physical contact.“And that which is missing is something that normally provides us with some contentment, some solace, some feeling that we're safe and that we're amongst others who we can rely on as a bio-behavioral resource,” said Emiliana Simon-Thomas, PhD, Science Director at the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.Simon-Thomas says hugs can help us communicate trust and support. She says even incidental moments of touch in the community, like brushing shoulders at a concert or giving someone a high-five, can help you feel reassurance.“I'm really worried about people who are absolutely alone,” she said. “I worry a lot about people who are ill and are in a situation where they're not allowed to be in company their loved ones.”For those people, she suggests focusing on a memory of the last time they hugged someone they love.It may sound odd, but some researchers also suggest hugging yourself.Touch is also associated with better heart health and higher levels of oxytocin in the brain. TOKYO (AP) — The Olympic rings have been removed from Tokyo Bay, reportedly temporarily. The gigantic rings were floated there this year on a barge to greet visitors, standing about 50 feet tall and 100 feet long. Organizers and the city of Tokyo say the Olympic symbol is being removed for maintenance and will return. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic and rescheduled to open on July 23, 2021. The Paralympics follow in August.“It’s not a permanent removal,” Masa Takaya, a spokesman for the Tokyo organizers, said this week. “It’s a temporary removal just for maintenance.”Atsushi Yanashimizu, who works on the project for the city government, said the rings will “be reinstalled after four months of maintenance work with the hopes of bringing excitement to the games, and to convey the appeal of the city of Tokyo and the games through this symbol.”Organizers have given no specifics about health protocols for competitors and spectators in a pandemic. 1012

TOKYO (AP) — Organizers are saying that a limited number of non-Japanese fans may be allowed to attend next year's Tokyo Olympics.CEO Toshiro Muto says after a meeting on infection countermeasures that fans could face some stringent rules. This would include screening for COVID-19 before they leave home. Non-Japanese fans may also face a 14-day quarantine, depending on their area of origin.Muto says this is still open to discussion.When asked if foreigners to Japan would follow the rules, Muto said it'd be difficult to control their movement and behavior.According to Reuters, Muto said that Olympic organizers are working with Japanese authorities to ensure that athletes and Olympic-related staff will not have to quarantine for 14 days.The goal is for athletes and workers to train and perform their duties leading up to the Olympics, which are expected to start in Summer 2021.There will be extensive screening on arrival and perhaps health-tracking apps to download and a rule book to be complied with. 1021

Three Denver police officers have been suspended after three separate incidents this year of arrestees being forgotten in temporary holding cells overnight. Policy requires desk officers to check on people detained in holding cells every 30 minutes and to notify a supervisor if someone has been held there for more than an hour. The holding cells are supposed to be temporary stops for arrestees before they can be transported to the city jail. Yet one woman, in custody for an unpaid traffic ticket, sat in a sparse police department holding cell for nearly 13 hours. Handcuffed to a bench, Victoria Ugalde could not reach the toilet for much of the time and had no option but to urinate on the floor.  "They forgot about me," Ugalde said. "I was looking in the camera, I was [saying] 'Can anybody help me?' And then, nobody."The desk officer who was supposed to check on Ugalde admitted he failed to notice she was there because he was wrapped up in reading a book, titled "Emotional Intelligence 2.0."He served a three-day suspension and is back on the job.The seemingly strange scenario played out twice more this year, and the police department is weighing policy changes to prevent it from happening again. "It should not have occurred," said Jess Vigil, deputy director of the Denver Department of Safety. "It doesn’t sit well with me and it doesn’t sit well with the department.”"I cried a lot"Victoria Ugalde had her driver's license revoked after a DUI arrest in 2003. She said she quit drinking after that arrest. THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KGTV) — National Park Service biologists say they're seeing a boom in mountain lion births this summer in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills areas.Between May and August, researchers have seen 13 total kittens born to five mountain lion mothers. This is the first time this many mountain lion dens have been found in such a short time period during the 18-year study, according to the National Park Service. A total of 21 litters of kittens have been marked at the den site. Previously, the most dens found in one year for the study was four in 2015."This level of reproduction is a great thing to see, especially since half of our mountains burned almost two years ago during the Woolsey Fire," said Jeff Sikich, a wildlife biologist who has been studying the mountain lion population at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. "It will be interesting to see how these kittens use the landscape in the coming years and navigate the many challenges, both natural and human-caused, they will face as they grow older and disperse."Since 2002, NPS has been studying mountain lions around the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how they survive in a fragmented and urbanized environment.To track the mountain lions, researchers wait until the mother leaves to hunt or feed. While researchers are tracking her movements, other researchers will approach the den to catalog the kittens and place a unique tag on the ear of each animal. These tags help researchers identify them in the future. 1533
