San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - Some military legal experts are raising concerns about President Donald Trump's involvement in the war crimes trial of Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher. This comes after the President ordered that medals and honors for prosecutors in the case be revoked."I think it's troubling," said University of San Diego Law Professor Robert Muth in an interview with 10News. "As the Commander in Chief, it would be his prerogative to weigh in if he felt there was something wrong. However, that would be done in a very different way. You would expect it to be done discreetly."Gallagher was accused of several war crimes during a tour of duty in Iraq. The central charge was that he murdered a prisoner of war, a wounded teenage ISIS fighter. Gallagher was acquitted of that charge. The case drew national attention, including from President Trump, who suggested that Gallagher was a hero who was being treated unfairly. Several people criticized how the JAG prosecutors handled the case."President Trump saw that they were abusing their power," said John Dadian, a San Diego political strategist who also served in the Marine Corps. "Not only manacling him during the trial, but confining him to quarters, he had a hard time taling to his lawyers. That's not fair." Dadian says many military veterans believe the President did the right thing by stepping in.Muth is worried about the President's actions setting a precedent. "The fact that the President went and used the bully pulpit, specifically his Twitter account, to essentially punch down at relatively junior folks who by law can't punch back, they just have to take it, is particularly problematic." Muth says the President's public criticism could have a chilling effect on JAG prosecutors who may feel pressured not to handle a case in the way they believe it should be handled because they feel they would be attacked by the President for political reasons. "These are folks who signed up to serve their country and are now being personally attacked by the President of the United States when they're trying to do their job. This isn't the way to do it. It's not how someone should lead. It's certainly not how the President should lead as Commander in Chief." 2240

Many are desperately looking for qualified tutors as families safely go back to school. But we found that the demand for tutors is not matching up with what is currently available.As the start of the distance-learning school year approaches, parents are beginning to feel the pressure."Desperate," parent, Cortney Lemos-Crawford laughed. "Desperate because of my own sanity!"Lemos-Crawford says she and her husband are fortunate to still have their jobs during the pandemic. But it is demanding. Distance learning for their 8-year-old daughter in March was not easy."It's very difficult, as you can imagine, to work full-time and have your child present, let alone present and needing your interaction," she said.She says it was hard for her daughter to concentrate at home, in a relaxing environment, with toys all around. She also does not want her daughter's formative years to suffer because of her own work schedule. So for weeks, she has been searching for a personal tutor.Jamie Evans and her partner Hannah Obradovich are former teachers who now run Ignite Learning Center in La Jolla. They provide K through 12 and Special education support around the county."We have been inundated with parents wanting us to form 'Pandemic pods,' garage groups, working outside, working with small groups with different age children to hire us to be their teachers," Evans said.But Evans says the supply of accredited teachers and tutors are not even close to the recent demand from desperate parents."We are in a rush to hire more teachers," Evans said. "I already talked to three people this morning, and I'm going to an interview right now."Lemos-Crawford says her tutor search so far has come up empty."I've had a couple of leads, but those people have been snatched up," she said.But she is not giving up. Their last minute pitches and speeches are happening this weekend at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. Republican candidates, staff, and volunteers say they are ready to shake things up in Sacramento. “I will be the loyal opposition to the wayward liberals of the Legislature,” Lt. Governor candidate, Cole Harris said, at the candidate forum. “Jerry Brown has certainly left a mark in our state over the years,” Judge Steven Bailey said. The State Attorney General said Brown has not been the leader they had hoped for."We've had eight years of Jerry Brown,” Gubernatorial candidate, John Cox said. “Poverty has soared, the cost of living has soared, taxes have soared, so we're excited for the chance to change all of that."Republican Gubernatorial  candidates, John Cox of Rancho Santa Fe, and Travis Allen of Huntington Beach have until Sunday to pitch to the nearly 1,000 member GOP delegation in San Diego this weekend, to get the prized official party endorsement.They only get that if they win 60% of the votes cast at the convention tomorrow. With the endorsement, both men say the will be ready to fight head-on against Democratic frontrunner, Gavin Newsom. And if elected as Governor, both promised to rid both the controversial Gas tax increase the State's Sanctuary law. "These are the issues that affect every single Californian, regardless of political party,” Gubernatorial candidate, Travis Allen said. Allen said he has supported President Trump from the beginning.  While Cox did not vote for Trump in 2016, he eventually pledged his support of the President. San Diego (KGTV)- With no warning, a light pole came crashing down on top of a car in Pacific Beach. Neighbors are worried that what they found could shine a light on a bigger problem. “It’s really scary that you can be walking down the street and something could fall out of the sky like that,” says neighbor Kevin Payne. Payne says he was walking in the area on Saturday, along Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue when he heard the loud crash. He says a San Diego lifeguard, who was driving by, stopped to section off the area until crews arrived. The base of the pole is filled with corrosion and rust. Neighbors say to the human eye it would have been tough to spot. “You wouldn’t notice just walking by, you would need to take off the cover of the base,” says Payne. “I think once you took the cover off it would have been clear as day.”In a statement to 10News, the city didn’t pinpoint the cause of the collapse but says the light is scheduled to be replaced this week. In the meantime, city crews will assess the other lights in the area to ensure they are “functional and stable.” The owner of the damaged car was not inside at the time. The city says she will need to make a claim with the Risk Management Department to determine who is liable. 1259

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory through Thursday for the coastal areas and Friday for the inland valleys in San Diego County.The hot weather and dry fuels create dangerous fire weather conditions, keeping fire crews across the county on high alert.“At nine, it already felt significantly warmer than the last couple of days,” said Elizabeth Conniff as she ended her hike at Iron Mountain Trailhead. “It was pretty hot, hotter than I expected, and very dry.”Poway reached nearly 100 degrees before noon Tuesday, nearing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year.Conniff, an experienced hiker, said that she would not recommend hiking during this time.Hotter temperatures are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.“If it’s going to be 100 or over, stay home, and that is from somebody who hikes three or four days a week,” she said.The NWS warns the hot weather could cause heat-related illnesses and recommends that people stay hydrated and out of the sun.Firefighting agencies ask everyone to remain vigilant and be extra cautious about doing anything that could spark a wildfire. 1141
