Iron Man is coming to life! Well, maybe not the superhero himself, but his iconic suit is being recreated. A group of engineering students and the Discovery Channel teamed up to make a real-life Iron Man suit.Adam Savage, host of Savage Builds on the Discovery Channel, recruited Craig Brice, a professor from Colorado’s School of Mines, who is known for his teachings in 3D metal printing.Jesse Adamczyk is one of 14 students selected to work on the Iron Man Project, and he was excited to be working with Savage.“We got to start working alongside Adam Savage and started fitting pieces around him and working right next to him. Right next to this legend,” Adamczyk says.Marvel Studios sent the students computer-generated imagery from the hit movie. Each piece of the 250-piece suit of armor was created from 3D printers and made out of titanium. They poured titanium powder into the printer and used a laser to cut out each piece.“The hands of the suit were very challenging,” Adamczyk says. “The hands, each had 30 parts, and the actual hand was about this thick of material.”This creation was such a phenomenal undertaking, because until recently, 3D printed metal parts were used only in military aircrafts and commercial vehicles.After three months of work, the team even impressed themselves with their capabilities. Adamczyk says the final product was incredible. And if the suit wasn’t cool enough, the group even put jet packs on the arms to make it fly, just like the one in the movie. 1509

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An 11-month-old Tennessee boy left in a bathtub without supervision has died and his mother is facing charges of murder and abuse after telling authorities she left the child to have some “me time." A hospital spokeswoman says the boy died Friday morning. An arrest warrant says 32-year-old Lindsee Leonardo told police she left the boy and a 23-month-old sibling in the tub Wednesday so she could smoke a cigarette and have some “me time." She told police she was away for about 10 minutes and returned to find the child floating on his back and not breathing. The toddler wasn't injured. 620

Jenny Bennett found her toddler floating in her family's pool, face-down, fully clothed. The 18-month-old had crawled through their home's pet door. An ER nurse, Bennett started CPR and rescue breathing on little Jackson while her husband called 911.Jackson was declared brain-dead after four days on life support."People automatically assume it happens to bad or neglectful parents," Bennett said.She spent two years going over and over the mistakes she made and finally decided to go public as an advocate for swim safety in her community of Tomball, Texas.Bennett thought she had taken the right precautions. She had two doors separating the house from the pool: a storm door over the back door and tight cover on the pet door. "We understood a doggy door was a risk for him to make it to the pool. We made it very clear that the dog door remains locked."But that day was unusual. She had to pick her husband up from work after his truck broke down and grabbed her three kids. With no time to let the dogs out, she opened the dog door and left the house. "I was too impatient to wait for them."When the family returned, she forgot it was open."There was a lapse in supervision. Kaylie Kempsell takes photos of babies for a living. “They’re really my passion. Newborns are what drives me,” Kempsell said.As a former NICU nurse, Kaylie knows the best practices when handling a newborn. She’s a pro in more ways than one. However, with more amateur photographers taking on newborn photography, Kempsell says everyone involved needs to be aware of the potential risks a baby can face.“There are a lot of things that go into newborn photography that the average person may not realize,” Kempsell said.According to NICU Neonatologist Dr. Susan Hwang with Children’s Hospital Colorado, it’s important to make sure the infant is breathing comfortably.“They are at risk of blocking off their airway if they happen to drop their heads and/or if there’s something placed in front of their nose or mouth from which they’re unable to shift their head position to allow them to get enough air during that photo session,” Dr. Hwang said.You’ll also want to make sure the baby’s body temperature is well regulated. If the baby is wrapped in too many blankets, it could get too warm.“Similarly, a baby shouldn’t be too cold, so if the air conditioning is ramped up during your photo session, the baby should have an additional layer.”And then of course, if the baby is on a surface above the ground, he or she should be watched at all times. Especially since babies can easily startle.“Often times in newborn photography, you notice that babies are on baskets or tables or are surrounded by other objects. You have to make sure the baby is secure and is not going to roll off,” Dr. Hwang said.Kempsell says she also makes sure there aren’t any tripping hazards, and if she’s using a prop, she thinks through potential hazards like splinters or lead paint. What many may not realize is that a lot of the unique poses newborn photographers achieve are done with photoshop.“During one photo we have an assistant holding the baby above their head like this on the top, and during another photo we have somebody holding the baby underneath their chin, usually by their wrists,” Kempsell said.In addition to her experience in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Kempsell has a certification for newborn photography safety. However, no overarching organization requires it.“So anybody can pick up a camera and start taking newborn photos and start charging for them,” Kempsell said.That’s why it’s good to look for photographers who have gone through some training.Stephanie Robin is the co-creator of APNPI. The organization started offering training courses for newborn photographers in 2017. “Our initiative is to educate photographers primarily in safely handling newborns,” Robin said.The safety course covers newborn physiology, newborn reflexes, safe environments for studio setting and how to handle birth injuries or pre-existing diagnoses. She thought to create the educational tool after noticing as a newborn photographer herself that babies could be placed in dangerous scenarios.“They’re human beings, and they’re actually in their most vulnerable state,” Robin said.To become an active member of the organization, you have to pass the course and the exam that follows. However, Robin notes it’s really only the complex poses to be concerned about.
