SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday morning, coffee enthusiasts will sample a rare coffee grown for the first time right here in San Diego.The geisha coffee bean, generally grown in Panama, is a rare coffee bean known for its unique flavor profile. The variety grown in Oceanside has tasting notes of jasmine tea, honey, key lime pie, and elderflower, according to Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, who are offering the coffee.?The bean's exclusivity is also reflected in its price. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some professors at the University of San Diego are using the impeachment inquiry public hearings as a teaching tool.Instead of listening to their professor lecture about constitutional law, students at USD watched history unfold.Sophomore Bryson Patterson says, “Although we are studying war powers now that this has come up, we get to see the constitution in action. So, we get to live it, going on which is pretty cool.”Casey Dominguez, a Political Science Professor, is allowing students to watch the impeachment inquiry hearings during class as part of today’s lesson plan, hoping to help them understand what’s happening.Dominguez adds she hopes her students, “walk away from our class feeling they are competent to figure out what’s going on. And come up with informed opinions about it.”A lesson some of her students say has already left a lasting impression on them. Charlie Young, a Junior adds, “it’s the perfect opportunity to happen in college. Where we have professors to walk us step by step through the process to understand what’s happening and help guide us through the process deeper than what the political ends would tell us.” 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's Department released data Friday giving insight into coronavirus-related enforcement over the past month in the department's jurisdictions.From June 10 to July 9, SDSO reported 673 COVID-19 related disturbances, violations, and citations — broken down into two citations, 74 disturbances, and 597 ordinance violations. SDSO says group disturbances and ordinance violations are calls made to the department and deputy-initiated incidents. Citations include Government Code 8665 and Health and Safety Code 120295, which both make violations of health orders a misdemeanor with possible fines and jail time. 650

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scripps Research is partnering with transit and healthcare workers to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.Scientists started analyzing data from smart watches and fitness trackers in March to detect if someone is infected with a virus like COVID-19 before they are aware of it.“When your heart beats faster than usual, it can mean that you’re coming down with a cold, flu, coronavirus or other viral infection." Jennifer Radin, PhD, Epidemiologist at Scripps Research says sleep and activity levels are good indicators as well.Dr. Radin is leading the study and said the coronavirus was the impetus to get the project off the ground. Dr. Radin said detection is key to save lives and stop the spread."If we can know where these hot spots are quicker and faster, public health officials can respond quicker," she said. Currently, she said data from the CDC takes a couple weeks. The activity monitors allow scientists at Scripps Research to have instant access to trends.The study chose frontline workers because, "due to the nature of their jobs, transit and healthcare workers are at higher risk of exposure to COVID-19 and other contagious respiratory illnesses,” Dr. Radin, PhD, said. Monica Valencia is a Senior Transit Store Clerk at MTS and lost her father in law Friday to COVID-19. He just turned 60 and had symptoms a week before he was admitted to the hospital. She said two weeks after he was admitted he was gone."I want to do anything and everything I can so every other family can avoid this situation." She said she was glad to hear about the study and hope it helps in the future."We have to start somewhere and we have to start documenting things, and starting here it's only going to help things moving forward," she said with determination.Fitbit donated 500 wristbands that scientists distributed to San Diego Metropolitan Transit System workers and nurses and physicians at Scripps Health.So far they study garnered 34,000 participants and Dr. Radin hopes to bring in even more data.
