GRANTVILLE, CA (KGTV) - A temporary relocation is becoming permanent for one Navy sailor.A driver backed into a hydrant in February causing flooding to 10 units at the Mission Heights Condominiums in Grantville.Cody Downs was among the affected and hoping to move back in after his apartment was repaired, all while others affected moved out.The active duty sailor says he was told by the management association in February that he could likely move back in by March. “It was just missed deadline after missed deadline,” said Downs.On Tuesday, Downs signed his 30-day clearance notice after the owner he was renting from told him they were selling the unit because of mounting delays from the management association and contractor.“I was intending on living here for the foreseeable future,” said Downs, “to have that taken away from me without any regard or any doing is just devastating.”The management company for the building First Service Residential could not provide a comment but said over the phone that repairing the affected apartments was ’98% resolved.’Downs is searching for a new place now, but he just wishes he didn’t take them for their word. "There was no verification process and I just kept giving trust and trust and maybe in a way I was the betrayed fool,” said Downs, “at the end of the day I lost my home.”  1375

HAMPTON, Va. — Students and teachers across Hampton Roads are preparing to start the school year virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That means empty classrooms for a lot of teachers in the area, including Kecoughtan High School."Now it's a little bit different because you're looking around and going, 'Hey, they're not going to be filled,'" said Mark Mingee, a history and government teacher at the school and a 20-year teaching veteran. "I'm going to be looking at a screen to see their faces, as opposed to seeing them right in front of me."But Mingee is making his classroom a little fuller. He created a fundraiser where people can donate to a scholarship fund and have their picture shown on a desk.Mingee, an avid sports fan, said he got the idea after seeing several leagues around the world fill empty stands with cardboard cutouts."You started to see these images on screens various places, or in the transition of cardboard cutouts of people in the stands," he said. "The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, if I'm going to be in my classroom, and I want there to be people around me, the best thing to do is try to emulate that in some way.'"So far, he said many friends, alumni and current students have taken part."We're used to, as teachers, having each one of those seats filled. So, as it appears those seats are filled, it makes you feel like a normal, everyday moment in class," Mingee said. Grand jury recordings of the Breonna Taylor case released on Friday reveal initial interviews police conducted with Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker."I'm scared. I don't know what to say," Walker told investigators on the same day his girlfriend was shot and killed in their apartment during a drug raid by Louisville Metro Police.Grand jurors listened to a series of interviews police conducted with Walker.Walker said he and Taylor were watching a movie when the first knock on the door happened. As more knocks came, Walker told investigators the repeatedly yelled, 'Who is it?' with no response."She's yelling at the top of her lungs, and I am too at this point. No answer. No response. Nothing," Walker said. "I was scared to death."Knocking continued as they were getting dressed. Walker told investigators he grabbed his gun at that point."It's the middle of the night, [someone is] knocking on the door and not even saying who they are. What are you going to do if you're at home with your family, and somebody is knocking on your door, and you don't know who it is after you've asked?" Walker defended himself when investigators questioned him later about the gun.While walking to the door, Walker said he saw the door come off the hinges."I let just let off one shot. I still can't see who it is or anything," he recounted.Attorney General Daniel Cameron has said Walker's bullet hit Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly's thigh, but Walker's attorney has disputed the fact.Walker told investigators he and Taylor dropped to the ground when police began firing, and the gun fell from his hands. When the shooting stopped, Walker said he saw Taylor bleeding near him."She's right here bleeding, and nobody's coming, and I'm just confused and scared. I feel the same right now," he said.In questioning, investigators asked Walker about his and Taylor's history with law enforcement. Walker told them Taylor's record was clean while he had recently done jail time for a DUI. As investigators pressed Walker to answer why he believed police might be at Taylor's apartment that night, he responded that he didn't know. He said he thought someone was trying to break in."As I said, I and her have no dealings with the police," Walker said.
