SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A mosquito caught in routine trapping in the Black Mountain Ranch area has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first appearance of the virus in San Diego County in 2020.County environmental health officials remind people to protect themselves from mosquitoes, which can potentially transmit, disease by following the county's "Prevent, Protect, Report" guidelines -- including finding and dumping out standing water in yards and around homes to keep mosquitoes from breeding.Incidences of West Nile virus were mild in San Diego County in 2019. Three people tested positive, but there were no fatalities and all three people were suspected of having contracted the virus while outside the county.However, West Nile virus remains a potentially deadly threat in San Diego County and the state, officials said. In 2015, 44 San Diego County residents tested positive for West Nile virus and six died. In 2019, 225 California residents became sick from West Nile virus and six died, according to the California Department of Public Health.West Nile virus is mainly a bird disease, but it can be transmitted to humans by a number of species of mosquitoes -- including Culex mosquitoes native to San Diego and, less effectively, by invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes also found in the county -- if they feed off an infected animal, mainly birds, and then bite people.Eight out of 10 people who get infected never suffer any symptoms. The 20% who do generally suffer mild symptoms including headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands. But in rare cases, West Nile virus can make people extremely ill and even kill them.Protecting against mosquitoes has become even more important for San Diego County residents in recent years. Since 2014, three types of day-biting, invasive Aedes mosquitoes have been found in the county. All of these mosquitoes tend to live and breed near people, in yards and even inside homes.Two of these species can potentially transmit diseases not naturally found here. Those include chikungunya, dengue and Zika -- but only if mosquitoes first bite an infected person. In general, that means local invasive Aedes mosquitoes could only transmit those diseases if they found and bit San Diego County residents who picked up the virus while traveling and returned home still infected.San Diego County residents may be more vulnerable to being bitten by mosquitoes around their homes now because many have been spending more time at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. Environmental health officials remind people to dump out or remove any item inside or outside of homes that can hold water, such as plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, garbage cans, toys, old tires and wheelbarrows.Mosquito fish, available for free by contacting the Vector Control Program, may be used to control mosquito breeding in backyard water sources such as stagnant swimming pools, ponds, fountains and horse troughs.Wear long sleeves and pants or use insect repellent when outdoors. Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. Make sure screens on windows and doors are in good condition and secured to keep insects out.Report increased mosquito activity, or stagnant, green swimming pools and other mosquito-breeding sources, as well as dead birds -- crows, ravens, jays, hawks and owls -- to environmental health's Vector Control Program by calling 858-694-2888 or emailing vector@sdcounty.ca.gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities asked the public today for help in identifying a man who robbed a South Bay financial-services office two weeks ago.The thief handed a demand note to a teller at the Mission Federal Credit Union branch in the 500 block of Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista shortly after 9 a.m. Nov. 27, according to the FBI. In the written message, the robber claimed to have a gun, though none was seen.The bandit, who fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, was described as a roughly 5-foot-7-inch Latino in his 30s or 40s, wearing a white-and-blue-checkered long-sleeved shirt, a blue Chicago Cubs-logo baseball cap and black-framed glasses.Anyone who might be able to help the FBI track down the thief is asked to call the federal agency at (858) 320-1800. 786

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - After reviewing options provided by the state of California regarding the coronavirus epidemic, the San Diego Air & Space Museum will close beginning Saturday, a spokesman said.Because of higher case numbers, San Diego County now sits in the purple tier of the state's four-tier coronavirus monitoring system, the most restrictive state rating. Many nonessential businesses will be required to move to outdoor-only operations. These include restaurants, family entertainment centers, wineries, places of worship, movie theaters, museums, gyms, zoos, aquariums and cardrooms.Amusement parks are closed. Bars, breweries and distilleries will be able to remain open as long as they are able to operate outside and with food on the same ticket as alcohol."We continue to highlight our internal/daily COVID-19 health safety protocols as the gold standard, in conformance with the CDC, the state of California and San Diego County," the museum's David Neville said."Accordingly, our staff looks forward to reopening at the soonest opportunity and is continuing efforts to work with the county and state to use valid science doing so. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages will kick off its first housing project of the year Tuesday at the future site of 82 affordable housing units.The project will convert an old E-Z 8 Motel at 1010 Outer Road into the housing complex for homeless residents. The project's kick-off ceremony will include a name dedication for its community funders and a 17-feet-tall banner unraveled from the building's top balcony, reading "Hope Lives Here."The city of San Diego plans to open a similar facility nearby in the Egger Highlands area by refitting a Super 8 motel that was the site of regular drug use and prostitution. The facility will include 82 beds and counseling for low-level drug offenders, many of whom are currently homeless. The California Coastal Commission voted to allow the project to move forward last month.Father Joe's Villages' ceremony will include remarks by president and CEO Deacon Jim Vargas and one of the organization's clients who has dealt with homelessness. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An annual reading program by United Way of San Diego County helped nearly 500 students in the City Heights neighborhood improve their literacy skills, the nonprofit announced today.The "Readers in the Heights" summer reading initiative included 479 students from elementary schools in the City Heights area, a sharp increase from the program's 40 participants just two years ago. The program is intended to combat "summer slide," when students lose literacy gains they made during the school year. According to United Way, 86 percent of students assessed at the beginning and end of the program maintained or improved their reading comprehension."We use proven assessment tools to measure impact and they show that these literacy practices have made significant progress in student reading," United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki said. "These practices help close learning gaps and open new worlds by creating happy, excited and confident readers."United Way partnered with the San Diego Unified School District, the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Police Department, PrimeTime SAY San Diego and Words Alive to produce the program.Members of the literacy group Words Alive trained members of the program's staff on how to implement evidence-based reading practices across the program's seven sites, including four elementary schools in and around City Heights. The students totaled nearly 10,000 hours of literacy learning during the 20-day program and received a total of 900 free books."Research shows that children who don't have access to books, camps or enrichment programs during the summer recess can lose more than two months of reading skills and can fall behind almost three months in their learning," said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Each year, the Readers in the Heights literacy initiative works to increase summer learning opportunities, and with the help of partners and volunteers, we are able to make a huge impact over four weeks.
