The average pork price has dropped to 12.61 yuan this week, 9.61 percent lower than the peak price on August 9, said China's economic planner after pork prices nearly doubled in the past eight months due to short supply and mounting production costs.The prices have seen a consecutive drop for the eighth week, down by 3.45 percent from the end of August, as the piglets raised since May and June grew ready for the market to add to the pork supply.Pigs daily butchered in 36 major cities have increased by 12.6 percent from August, and the supply is expected to keep rising, said the National Development and Reform Commission.But the Ministry of Commerce said the decline in the pork prices would probably stop as demand surges during the ongoing National Day holiday and feedstuff prices stay high.The soaring pork prices is a major contributor to the general food price hikes that drive up the consumer price index to a 6.5 percent increase in August.
A vice-governor of China's central bank, Xiang Junbo, is expected to take the helm at the Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) to steer it through its shareholding reform in order to secure a market listing.It is not clear what post the People's Bank of China's Xiang will take but Caijing magazine, a leading financial publication, reported that the 50-year-old would be appointed as the governor and the chairman of the board upon the accomplishment of the shareholding reform.Analysts say the new appointment will not lead to immediate moves such as inviting strategic investors or financial restructuring as the bank is widely known to be the worst hit by massive lending to the rural sector, with a non-performing loan rate of 23.43 percent at the end of 2006, far higher than those of the other three state commercial banks, which have all been listed in Hong Kong and domestic A share markets.Before being promoted to the post of vice-governor of the People's Bank of China in July 2004, Xiang spent eight years with the National Audit Office. His background will be constructive to strengthening the risk control of the ABC, analysts say.China initiated the reform of the "big four" banks after the first national financial work conference in 1997. LONDON, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The Center for Creative Business in London hosted on Thursday Creative Exchange with China, exploring the possibilities of business ventures between the two countries in the creative industry. The conference, which is aimed to help creative businesses from both China and Britain to get to know each other before exploring the business potentials of the rising industry, has attracted some 200 creative entrepreneurs, creative business managers and executives, policy makers, practitioners academics and researchers. In his keynote speech delivered at the conference, Michael Bichard, rector of the University of the Arts London, said within the next two years, Britain's creative industries sector is expected to overtake the financial sector as the country's most significant economy. At the same time, China will move ahead of Germany as the world's third largest economy. "If we remain isolated, we would not be able to achieve our creative goals of building global brands. To make collaborations effective, it takes much deeper look into the respective industries instead of superficial ones," he said. Bichard, who is also chair of Design Council UK, hopes that Design Council would cooperate with China not only academically, but across the business to develop tomorrow's creative industry. However, Bichard noted that creative exchange is not just about money, it's about understanding. The Olympics is a strong link between Beijing and London. Bichard urged for enforcing the bond, saying "two countries together can achieve great things." Hong Kong' benchmark Hang Seng Index plunged 5.18 percent on Monday to close at its lowest level this year, drawn by growing troubles in the global credit markets and weakness in the Chinese mainland bourses. The Hang Seng Index fell 1,152.50 points, or 5.18 percent, to close at 21,084.61 on Monday, its lowest level in nearly seven months, amid worries on the near collapse of U.S. investment bank Bear Stearns. Over the weekend, the subprime mortgage crisis claimed another major victim -- Wall Street's fifth largest investment bank Bear Stearns. Wall Street fell sharply on Friday on the news, followed by Asian markets. The benchmark Hang Seng Index opened at 21,318.03 and fluctuated between 21,041.26 and 21,473.40 during the session. Turnover was at 94.37 billion HK dollars (12.16 billion U.S. dollars), up from last Friday's 88.28 billion HK dollars (11.32 billion U.S. dollars). Three of the four major categories lost ground. The Properties lost most at 5.73 percent, followed by the Commerce and Industry at 5.58 percent and the Finance at 5.32 percent. The Utilities, the only gainer, edged up 0.21 percent. Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said on Wednesday that China is fertile ground for an online advertising exchange akin to the one the US Internet titan is buying. The comment was among insights Yang shared with more than 1,000 Chinese and US technology entrepreneurs gathered in the California city of Santa Clara to discuss opportunities and challenges presented by the meteoric growth of China's economy. "On the whole, we feel our move to partner with Alibaba so far looks like it's the right strategy," Yang said. "It is too early to tell whether we are successful or not." "The best strategy still seems to be Chinese and US companies sharing best practices ¡ª we all benefit." Yahoo is buying New York City-based online advertising exchange Right Media in a move to counter Google's move to acquire the DoubleClick Internet ad-targeting firm. The California online search titan, which owns 20 percent of Right Media, said it will acquire the remaining 80 percent of the company for 680 million dollars (500 million euros) in stock and cash. The ad exchange serves as a place where advertisers can easily "hook-up" with websites or online services that cater to desired customer demographics. While announcing on April 13 that it was buying New York-based DoubleClick for 3.1 billion dollars, Google revealed plans for the Internet ad tracking and targeting firm to create an open exchange similar to Right Media.
