BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for more efforts to deepen judicial reform in the coming year to better ensure social justice."The year 2011 is the first year for the country's 12th five-year-program period, and is also a key year for us to improve judicial systems and working systems," Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, said Tuesday during a meeting.While urging thorough implementation of various policies of reform put forward this year, Zhou encouraged more opinions and ideas on reform issues for the next year.During the meeting, opinions put forward by the Supreme People's Court were heard regarding the legal procedures for reviewing death sentences, the security system for judicial professionals and the judgment and supervision of people's courts.The meeting also reviewed opinions on procuratorial agencies' legal supervision on civil and administrative lawsuits.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on Friday ordered local governments to begin a campaign to inspect projects under construction to eliminate safety risks in the wake of recent fire accidents.Local authorities should work on "effective prevention of accidents" and improve safety, especially in winter when fire and gas poisoning accidents tend to be more frequent, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Special monitoring should be undertaken of reconstruction work and of projects involving the expansion of existing buildings, it said, urging a "serious" crackdown on illegal practices during building operations, according to the statement.The notice followed the call from the State Council on Wednesday demanding tougher fire prevention measures, after a blaze Monday gutted a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai, killing at least 58 people, and another fire engulfed a 99-year-old building at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Nov. 13.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday urged advancing the nation's health care reforms against all odds in 2011.Li, who heads the State council's leading group on health care reforms, made the remarks while presiding over the eighth plenum of the group.The meeting discussed work agendas in 2011, plans for piloting public hospital reforms, guidelines on training General Practitioners (GP) and other topics.Li said health care reforms had made great headway since they were launched one year ago, and people had received tangible benefits from the reforms. BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen of 17 Vietnamese crew members were saved by a Chinese rescue team after strong winds sank the Vietnamese ship, the Hung Cuong 168, near Minjiang estuary in the East China Sea on Friday evening, the Chinese rescue center said.According to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC), the Vietnamese ship, which was overloaded with 5,200 tonnes of stone materials, had an engine breakdown this afternoon and overturned at around 5:00 p.m. due to high winds, with 17 crew members falling into the sea.Being alerted about the accident, China's East China Sea Rescue Bureau and the local maritime search and rescue center in the coastal Fujian Province sent professional salvage vessels and helicopters to the scene where they rescued 13 sailors, as of 6:18 p.m.The rescue team is still searching for the remaining four sailors, according to the CMSRC.
