LOS ANGELES, Calif. – During her first show of her 18th season, Ellen DeGeneres addressed the toxic workplace allegations made over the summer and apologized to those affected.“As you may have heard, this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation,” said the talk show host in a clip released Monday morning. “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.”DeGeneres said she knows she’s in a position of privilege and power and realizes that it comes with responsibility.“I take responsibility for what happens at my show,” she said. “This is the ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ I am Ellen DeGeneres, my name is there, my name is there, my name is on underwear.”DeGeneres said the people at the show have had a lot of conversations over the past few weeks about the workplace and what they want for the future.“We have made the necessary changes, and today, we are starting a new chapter,” said DeGeneres without saying what the changes would be.This was the first time DeGeneres addressed her viewers publicly since BuzzFeed and other news outlets reported about the dozens of current and former employees who said executive producers engaged in sexual misconduct and harassment at the show. Other workers detailed accounts of racism, fear and intimidation, BuzzFeed reports.Three executive producers of the show have been fired since the allegations were revealed. At the end of her opening monologue, DeGeneres announced that Stephen “tWitch” Boss won’t be her DJ any longer. Instead, he’ll act as co-executive producer, because DeGeneres says he’s “such an important part of this show.”DeGeneres also addressed reports that she’s not who she appears to be on television. She says she became known as the “be kind” lady, because that’s how she ends her shows. But that put her in a tricky spot, because people are complex.“I am also a lot of other things,” she said. “Sometimes I get sad, I get mad, I get anxious, I get frustrated, I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress, and I'm especially working on the impatience thing because, and it's not going well, because it's not happening fast enough, I will tell you that.”Watch the monologue below: 2361

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The touching black-and-white drama "Roma" that follows a domestic worker for a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City won the Oscar for best foreign language film Sunday.Director Alfonso Cuaron's deeply personal film with dialogue in Spanish and Mixtec gave Mexico its long-sought statuette in the foreign film category. The Netflix-produced film was inspired by Cuaron's own youth. "Roma" won him the best director award and one for best cinematography. The story develops in the midst of the turmoil that rocked Mexico in the early 70s, including the student demonstrations that in 1971 led to a massacre by a group backed by authorities. Society is fraying and the women of the house seem to take the brunt as they try to keep the family of four children afloat. The film beat four other contenders that also told the stories of individuals and families facing tumultuous social and historical times. The other nominated films were Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski's 20th-century romance "Cold War;" German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's artist biopic "Never Look Away;" Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda's's subtle family story "Shoplifters;" and "Capernaum," a powerful neo-realist drama about a Syrian child refugee from Lebanon's Nadine Labaki. The foreign film statue is not given to a specific individual, but to the nominating country. Eighty-seven countries submitted movies for consideration this year.Mexico has competed for the trophy eight other times, most recently in 2011 with "Biutiful" by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, but had never won. 1598

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Two Beverly Hills men, including a Realtor, have been charged with burglarizing the homes of singers Usher and Adam Lambert and other residences by allegedly using open houses to facilitate the crimes, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday. Jason Emil Yaselli, a 32-year-old Realtor, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on 50 felony counts, including first-degree residential burglary, first-degree residential burglary with a person present, money laundering, identity theft, conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The charges include an allegation of taking more than 0,000 through fraud and embezzlement. Yaselli, who was arrested Wednesday by Los Angeles police, was jailed in lieu of .73 million bail. Co-defendant Benjamin Eitan Ackerman, 33, pleaded not guilty Monday to the same charges, which allege crimes between December 2016 and August 2018. The criminal complaint alleges that Yaselli ``allowed defendant Ackerman to use his credit card with the understanding that defendant Ackerman would pay down the principal and interest from the proceeds of the sale of the luxury items taken from 14 inhabited dwellings'' and ``encouraged'' Ackerman to commit the burglaries. The alleged victims of the burglaries included Usher, Lambert, reality TV personalities Paul and Dorit Kemsley and former professional football player Shaun Phillips. In many instances, Yaselli and Ackerman allegedly identified the targets or committed the burglaries during open houses in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Brentwood and Hollywood Hills, according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Morgan. At a Jan. 2 news conference, Los Angeles police announced that more than 2,000 high-end items -- including art work, clothing, purses, jewelry and fine wine -- had been seized from a home and storage unit belonging to Ackerman. ``Ackerman would pose as either an interested buyer or in purchasing the property or he would pose as a real estate broker wanting to show the property,'' Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Cory Palka said at the news conference. ``With the assistance of the LAPD's Commercial Crimes Unit, Hollywood detectives were able to identify 13 separate burglary victims based on evidence recovered from the locker or storage unit and Ackerman's residence. We believe there may be additional victims based on the large volume of stolen property that was recovered and are asking the public's help in identifying additional victims, and most importantly, returning their property to them.'' LAPD Detective Jared Timmons estimated that the items are collectively worth ``in the millions of dollars, multiple millions of dollars.'' Investigators determined that Ackerman -- who has a criminal record -- had signed into open houses on several occasions and asked in one instance about acquiring rare art work, the detective said. Ackerman -- who allegedly went after ``high-value targets'' -- showed up to the open houses while ``dressed to the nines'' and ``acted the part'' without being challenged to confirm his identity or where he was employed, according to the detective. ``He would tour open houses and he would come back later,'' Timmons told reporters. ``... This person is very sophisticated. In a lot of these cases, we see tampered surveillance videos. We're still looking into that. As we said, open houses usually were the main source of that. However, we do have one case where he targeted a family friend, so nobody's off the table.'' Ackerman was initially arrested last September by Los Angeles police, then arrested again on Aug. 16, one day after the criminal charges were filed. He was subsequently released on a .2 million bond and is due back in court Oct. 3, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to require him to stand trial. Yaselli and Ackerman could face up to 31 years and eight months in prison if they are convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney's Office. 4099

LOS ANGELES (CNS and KGTV) - Amid whipping winds and dangerously low humidity, fire crews continued efforts to snuff to the Getty Fire in the Sepulveda Pass Wednesday, fearful that the extreme weather conditions ignite new flames. At 5 p.m., mandatory evacuation orders and warnings were lifted in all areas with the exception of an area bordered by Kenter Ave., Sunset Blvd., Mountain Gate Ave., and a section near Sepulveda Blvd. and the 405 freeway. As of Wednesday evening, the fire was listed at 745 acres, with 27% containment. But forecasters said the area could be blasted with winds ranging from 30 to 50 mph, along with occasional gusts of up to 70 mph. RELATED: MAP: SoCal Fires burn in Santa Ana conditions``Adverse weather conditions will be the biggest challenge for firefighters,'' according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. ``In anticipation of the extreme Santa Ana wind event, the LAFD has recalled and staffed additional resources for any emergency that may arise over the next 24 hours. These resources will be strategically placed in key locations that have a history of being prone to wildfire.'' The National Weather Service issued what it deemed an ``extreme red flag warning,'' which went into effect at 11 p.m. Tuesday, amid predictions some mountain areas could be blasted with gusts of up to 80 mph. The warning covers the bulk of Los Angeles County and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. ``The peak of the event is expected to be Wednesday when damaging wind gusts between 50 and 70 mph will be likely for the wind-prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with isolated gusts to 80 mph in the mountains,'' according to the weather service. ``This Santa Ana wind event will likely be the strongest we have seen so far this season. These strong winds combined with a long duration of single- digit humidities and dry fuels will likely bring very critical fire weather conditions, making this an extreme red flag warning event.'' As of Wednesday, the Getty Fire, which broke out around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning alongside the San Diego (405) freeway near Getty Center Drive, had destroyed 12 homes and damaged five others. One firefighter sustained a minor injury. About 760 firefighters were battling the blaze. Despite the attention focused on the Getty Fire, the Los Angeles Fire Department dispatched three strike teams to Ventura County Wednesday morning to help fight the Easy Fire that erupted in Simi Valley, forcing evacuations and threatening the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. The agency also sent crews to help knock down a small brush fire in Calabasas. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department also noted that it was monitoring the Easy Fire, but it had not moved toward Los Angeles County as of Wednesday afternoon. The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent Firehawk water dropping helicopters and two strike teams to Simi Valley as part of its mutual aid agreement. Locally, however, attention was focused on the Getty Fire. LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas noted Tuesday that it would take ``one ember, just one ember downwind, to start another brush fire.'' At the fire's height, evacuation orders were issued affecting 10,000 structures, both residential and commercial, in an area between the 405 Freeway and Temescal Canyon Road, from Sunset Boulevard north to Mulholland Drive. Evacuation orders were lifted Monday night for the Mountaingate community south of Mulholland. Evacuation centers remain open at the Westwood Recreation Center at 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd., near Wilshire Boulevard, and the Palisades Recreation Center, 851 Alma Real Drive. Evacuation centers for animals were established at the West Valley Animal Shelter at 20655 Plummer St., the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter at 11361 Pico Blvd. Hansen Dam Recreation Center at 11770 Foothill Blvd. in Lake View Terrace was opened to receive large animals. Authorities confirmed Tuesday afternoon the Getty Fire was caused by gusting winds that severed a tree branch and blew it into a Department of Water and Power electrical line, causing sparks that fell onto the brush below. ``This was, simply put, ... an act of God,'' Garcetti said. Marty Adams, general manager of the Department of Water & Power, told reporters the agency had just completed a brush-clearing operation in the area in July, trimming 248 trees ``in excess of what the state requires.'' He noted that the branch in question came from a tree ``outside of our clearance zone'' but was carried by the wind into the power line. Adams said the power line itself remained intact and is still delivering electricity to the area. The San Diego Freeway, a southbound stretch of which was closed for much of the day Monday, was open through the Sepulveda Pass, but exit ramps between the Ventura (101) Freeway in Sherman Oaks to Sunset Boulevard were blocked. The Getty Center museum was not believed to be in immediate danger from the flames. Officials there said Getty Center and the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades would be closed through Friday to ensure fire crews had adequate access to the area to fight the flames. 5142

LONDON — Shares in the company that owns the Regal, Cineworld and Picturehouse cinemas in the U.S. and Britain have fallen as much as 58% after it will temporarily close its venues after release of the latest James Bond film was postponed due to the pandemic. The company said the Bond delay left it with too few blockbusters to attract customers. Cineworld Group Plc said Monday that 536 Regal cinemas in the U.S. and 127 Cineworld and Picturehouse venues in the U.K. will close on Thursday. Some 45,000 employees are affected. The company says that with major markets such as New York closed and no guidance on when they will reopen, “studios have been reluctant to release their pipeline of new films.” 713
