A University of Maryland football player who died of heat stroke this summer did not receive proper medical care, and some members of the training staff made mistakes, according to preliminary results of an independent review.Jordan McNair, 19, died June 13, two weeks after taking part in a workout at Maryland's outdoor practice fields, CNN affiliate WJZ reported. Last week, the university placed its head football coach, D.J. Durkin, and members of the athletic staff on administrative leave pending the investigation into circumstances surrounding the death.The preliminary findings of an external review, which will be made public in September, found that an emergency response was not followed in McNair's case and the care the university provided was not consistent with best practices, Athletic Director Damon Evans said Tuesday.McNair's heat illness was not promptly identified, and athletic training staff did not take his temperature and apply a cold-water immersion treatment, Evans said.The university has also parted with its head strength coach, Rick Court, Evans said."We will honor Jordan's life and we will ensure that a tragedy such as this never happens on our campus again by working every single day to provide the safest environment for our student-athletes on and off the field," Evans said, fighting back tears.Evans announced the preliminary findings hours after he and university President Wallace D. Loh met with McNair's family and shared the findings with them.The two officials apologized to McNair's family during that meeting in Baltimore and issued public apologies Tuesday.Loh said he told the family the "university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes that our training staff made on that fateful workout day."Loh said he also told McNair's family: "The university owes you an apology. A police officer in Columbus, Ohio, was arrested on Thursday on two child pornography related counts, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said.Officer Raymond Rose, 29, was arrested on two second degree felony counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity related material and for pandering obscene material involving a minor. Rose is accused by O’Brien’s office of illegally filming a nude minor on July 20, 2020 inside a Columbus residence.O’Brien said that Rose was a member of the police’s patrol division for five years.WCMH-TV confirmed that Rose was placed on administrative leave and does not have arrest power during his leave.“When criminal activity is discovered, our duty is to investigate and pursue the appropriate action based on the evidence,” Columbus Division of Police Chief Tom Quinlan said in a statement to WCMH. “The fact that it involves one of our own does not change that. A trip to the grocery store can be a difficult and stressful outing for a senior. So, two high schoolers from Maryland jumped in to help their own neighbors, and now their idea is spreading across the nation.The students, just 15 and 16 years old, are coordinating hundreds of free grocery deliveries for seniors in need during the pandemic.“We’ve learned there’s a huge problem, unfortunately, when it comes to senior hunger,” said Matthew Casertano.Casertano and his friend, Dhruv Pai, started by making grocery deliveries to their own grandparents.“I saw the fear in their eyes every time they went to the grocery store,” said Pai. “There was a trade-off they had to make between the necessities and their personal safety that I wanted to avoid at all costs.”“We knew we couldn’t rely on the goodwill of people wearing masks, keeping social distancing, so we had to do the shopping,” said Casertano.Then, one afternoon on the carpool ride home, the teens had an idea. “We thought, ‘What about people who don’t have grandchildren who can’t do the shopping for them?’” said Casertano.That’s when they started Teens Helping Seniors, where any senior in need can email a grocery list for teens to pick up at the store.“We will coordinate a volunteer in their area who can service that request in a one to two-day turnaround,” said Pai.The teens do all the shopping, and then drop off and sanitize each order. It’s a simple favor that means so much to those they help.“I thank you, and I thank God for you, for making such a unique individual as every human being is, but you’re showing it, you’re showing your heart,” said Marie Cavill, a senior who fractured her back during the pandemic. Cavill has physically been unable to leave her home, but she is also frightened to go out and risk a possible COVID-19 exposure.The teens said they were shocked by how many volunteers this program now has. They have 26 chapters in the United States and one chapter in Canada, with more than 600 volunteers. A public school administrator in Nashville has resigned following the disclosure of a secret recording where he plotted to bypass filters designed to protect children from exposure to lead in their water.Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) executive director of facilities Dennis Neal, resigned Friday, according to MNPS communications director Olivia Brown.
