NEW ORLEANS, La. – Just before the lunch rush at one New Orleans restaurant, the hottest spot is the kitchen. The place is Café Reconcile: a restaurant that caters to both customers and its employees. “It’s not your typical job. It’s not the typical restaurant,” said Chef Eugene Charles Temple, Jr. “We come in here to change lives.” The café specializes in teaching culinary skills to disadvantaged young people, by training them to take on all aspects of restaurant work. It goes far beyond that, though. The café offers counseling and teaches classes on life skills – like how to open a bank account. “No one’s forcing them to come here,” said Gerald Duhon, Executive Director of Café Reconcile. “They want a change in their life.” Ahmaad Lott felt that first-hand. “To be honest, you know, I wasn’t in a great situation,” Lott said. Several years ago, he was facing mental health issues. Lott got help and eventually rose through the ranks at Café Reconcile to become a trainer to others dealing with similar circumstances. “That was me a few years ago,” Lott said. “I barely know this young person, but to know their story resonates to my story so deeply, and in a way that, you know, we can share our experiences and grow together.” Several thousand young people have graduated from Café Reconcile since it began more than two decades ago. However, the issue of “disconnected youth” is not limited to New Orleans. A 2014 Tulane University study found that, across the country, there are 6.7 million disconnected youth, costing the U.S. economy billion a year in lost tax revenues and needed social services. “The way we look at it is our young people don’t have anything wrong with them,” Duhon said. “What they have that many young people do not have is support—and particularly support around the barriers that are in their life.” It’s a support for which Ahmaad Lott says he’s grateful. “That gave me that avenue, that gave me that channel to really make something of myself,” he said. BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. – The governor of New Jersey has announced the state’s first death from the new coronavirus. “We are sad to report the first death in a case of COVID-19 in New Jersey," said Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement Tuesday. "Our prayers are with the family during this difficult time. We remain vigilant to doing all we can — across all levels of government — to protect the people of New Jersey.” The deceased is a man in his 60s from Bergen County who had a history of traveling between New Jersey and New York and had a history of working New York, according to Department of Health Commissioner Judith M. Persichilli. He was admitted to Hackensack University Medical Center on March 6. He eventually suffered two cardiac arrests.Including the deceased, New Jersey now has 16 cases of the novel coronavirus. DENVER – The man who was detained after driving his car through a crowd of protesters rallying for Breonna Taylor says he had no intention of hurting anybody and was only defending himself after his vehicle was surrounded by demonstrators outside the Colorado State Capitol building in Denver Wednesday night.“I was driving to go pick up a client and I saw a commotion, I saw police lights at 14th and Lincoln and so when I was there, at the Capitol, I wasn’t really looking left, I was looking right to see the accident and by the time I turned, I started getting surrounded by people,” said Jonathan Benson, who claimed demonstrators yelled, kicked and even used a hammer on his windshield as they tried to get him to leave the area.Video from AIRTRACKER7, as well as from reporters on the ground, showed the small crowd of protesters surrounding Benson’s vehicle and blocking his way. The driver, who was going north on Lincoln Street, had slowed down as he reached the protesters in the area, eventually pulling up and parking his vehicle in front of the Capitol building. CHICAGO, Ill. – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) celebrated its 110th anniversary this month. Just days later, they filed for bankruptcy protection. The move came as the organization was hit with dozens of child sexual abuse lawsuits dating back decades. “The boy scouts have had the problem of pedophiles targeting their troops since the very earliest days,” said attorney Chris Hurley with the Chicago based law firm Hurley McKenna & Mertz. The firm has represented more than a dozen former boy scouts who claim they were the victims of sexual abuse. “The Boy Scouts approach over all those many years was to keep it secret, to suppress the information, not share it with the community and not really addressed the problem,” said Hurley. The problem, however, has been known for decades. Court records revealed that since the 1920s, the BSA compiled “red” lists of adult volunteers identified as potential child molesters. They were known as the “ineligible files” or “perversion files.” One serial pedophile, who was twice convicted in Indiana before preying on hundreds of boy scouts in Illinois, was Thomas Hacker. He was convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 100 years in prison, where he died. Hurley settled 18 cases brought by Hacker’s victims. “I interviewed Thomas Hacker in prison and asked him why he chose the Boy Scouts. And what he told me was. ‘It was just so easy. They really didn't do anything to stop me.’” Two weeks ago, the Boy Scouts of America announced a five-year-partnership with an organization that provides services to male survivors of sexual abuse. The BSA isn’t talking but issued a statement in which president & CEO Roger Mosby wrote: “We sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed in Scouting. In addition to implementing strong policies to prevent abuse, we are dedicated to supporting victims when and how they need it.” Sweeping new legal changes extending or eliminating the statute of limitations for victims to sue their abusers have been passed in more than a dozen states like California, New York and New Jersey. That’s led to more survivors coming forward and filing suit, but with last week’s bankruptcy filing by the BSA, everything’s been put on hold. In its filing, the organization estimates its assets at between billion and billion. “The bankruptcy is really an attempt by the Boy Scout organization to control the damages and control hopefully how much money they have to pay out and to get a cut off for any more claims,” said Hurley. A portion of those assets will likely go to compensate victims. But anyone who has not filed a claim by a looming deadline could be barred from future settlements. “The bill has come due. BURLINGTON, Vt. – Almost every morning for the last 35 years, a 21-car-train pulls into Burlington, Vermont, with roughly 1,500 tons of wood chips that help power the city. Wood burning represents 30% of Burlington’s power grid, and 20% comes from solar panels and wind turbines. In 2014, when Burlington opened a hydro plant, that took over the remaining 50% of the city’s power grid and marked a historic moment – Burlington was now the first city in the U.S. to run 100% on renewable energy. “We had our challenges at the beginning,” said David MacDonnell. “There were a lot of growing pains that we went through.” MacDonnell knows firsthand about the path to the city’s energy milestone. He moved to Burlington in 1983 and began working for the city’s electric company, Burlington Electric Department, in 1984. MacDonnell started as an operator at B.E.D.’s McNeil Generating Station. “When I came, the plant was still in construction,” said MacDonnell. At McNeil’s, at that time, Burlington Electric was just starting to experiment with wood as a possible energy source. “It was very groundbreaking stuff at the time,” MacDonnell added. The idea stemmed from the company looking for a more cost-effective energy source, and wood proved to be that. But over the years, the company and the community realized there were added benefits. “The fuel budget last year was million and if you think about it, we get our fuel with in a 60-mile radius of this plant. We keep a lot of money local for the community. You know the mom and pop stores, loggers, and truckers. That really supports the whole area,” MacDonnell explained. With wood as the first renewable energy source, Burlington has also been less affected by the volatile fossil fuel industry so customer rates have been stable for more than a decade. “Burlington Electric has successful achieved the 100% renewable energy goal without raising rates for over a decade now, so we prove it is possible to maintain rates,” said Paul Pikna, a senior generation engineer at Burlington Electric. “One could even argue, if you count inflation, we’ve decreased rates over the decade.” But perhaps the biggest benefit in the successful application of wood as an energy source, is that it started the energy revolution in Burlington and now, in an era of concern about climate change, many point to Burlington’s energy grid as a model for other cities to consider. “It’s very satisfying for me to know that I worked at a place for my whole career that really amounted to something that I consider a very positive for Vermont, the country, the world,” said MacDonnell. After three decades with Burlington electric and helping it pave the way for renewable energy, MacDonnell is preparing to retire. He leaves feeling like he made more than money in his career, he made a difference. “You have a sense of pride knowing that you are doing something that is a difference. I have kids and grandkids and we want to make sure we leave this planet in good shape for them.” Burlington hit the historic milestone running 100% on renewable energy five years ago, and now at least four other cities have hit that milestone too. Those cities are Aspen, Colorado; Greensburg, Kansas; Kodiak, Alaska; and Rock Port, Missouri. Within the next decade, a dozen states are hoping to get there, states like Minnesota, Massachusetts, and even California. However, while other cities and states are trying to catch up to Burlington, it’s moving forward with the next step that is a more ambitious energy goal. Burlington wants to be the first net zero energy city in the country. Essentially, the city wants the total amount of energy it consumes to be equal to the total amount of renewable energy it creates. “About a month ago we rolled out a roadmap to go from where we are today to net zero across the thermal ground transportation electric sectors by 2030,” said Burlington’s Mayor Miro Weinberger. “The exciting thing about the roadmap is that we can get there with technology that is available today and are largely cost effective today.” The move forward, for Burlington, is not about energy bragging rights, but about data suggesting this move is critical. “All the climate models suggest we need to make substantial progress by 2030 and much more dramatic progress by 2050,” added Weinberger. 4376
