BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Singapore-flagged tanker Pramoni, hijacked off the Somali coast last month, was escorted by a Chinese vessel to the safe waters on Friday, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry."At the request of the Singaporian side, the Chinese 'Chaohu' navy ship successfully conducted the escort mission," said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry Friday night."All crew onboard the Singapore-flagged chemical tanker are safe and sound and emotionally stable," the statement said, without specifying the route or length of the escort mission.The cargo ship, with five Chinese sailors among the 24 crew onboard, was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Jan. 1."The Chinese escort mission provided the released vessel with necessary supplies and medical assistance," the statement said.Pramoni's captain thanked the captain and crew of the Chinese vessel helping with the escort.China sent its first escort mission to the Gulf of Aden off Somalia in early 2009. Its fourth mission is now part of a multinational coalition of warships patrolling the pirate-infested area.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- China's supreme court and procuratorate vowed Thursday to step up anti-corruption efforts after a string of high ranking officials fell in last year's clean-up campaign.Prosecutors will focus on work-related crimes, commercial bribery and crimes that seriously infringe on people's interests this year, Prosecutor-General Cao Jianming told lawmakers in his work report to the parliament.More attention will also be given to criminal cases behind mass incidents and accidents, cases concerning construction projects, real estate development, land management and mineral resource exploration, Cao told nearly 3,000 lawmakers at the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC).These areas are where corruption usually hide.Officials acting as "protective umbrella" for gangs will also be a focus of prosecutors' agenda this year, Cao said.In the work report of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP), Cao said the country's prosecutors launched graft probes against 2,670 officials above county level last year, including eight at the provincial or ministerial level.The eight high-ranking officials included Huang Songyou, former vice president of the Supreme People's Court and Wang Yi, former vice president of the state-run China Development Bank.Also on the list were Chen Shaoji, former top political advisor of southern Guangdong Province, and Wang Huayuan, a former provincial official in eastern Zhejiang Province.Altogether, prosecutors investigated about 41,000 people, down 3.3 percent, in more than 32,000 cases, up 0.9 percent, for embezzlement, bribery, dereliction of duty and other work-related crimes last year, according to Cao's report.Among the probed, more than 18,000 were "extremely serious" corruption cases, while 3,100 were grave cases in connection to dereliction of duty or infringement of people's rights, it said.More than 9,300 government workers were implicated in cases of dereliction of duty, malfeasance and infringement of people's rights, Cao said.Nearly 3,200 bribers were punished "in an effort to strengthen crackdown on bribery offering crimes," he said.Cao said the authorities seized more than 1,100 on-the-run suspects involved in work-related crimes, with more than 7.1 billion yuan (about one billion U.S. dollars) embezzled or received in bribes recovered.NPC deputy Zhu Yong, also a political and law official in the provincial Communist Party committee in the eastern Anhui Province, said strict anti-corruption measures, such as auditing on officials who are leaving their posts, have produced fruitful results in fighting corruption.However, Zhu said some officials are still vulnerable to the temptation of bribes, and so fighting graft remains a challenge.Fighting graft is a very difficult task worldwide and cannot be efficiently addressed in a short period of time, Zhu added.VOWS TO CLEAN UP JUDICIARYChief Justice Wang Shengjun said courts will take actions on judicial corruption to prevent abuse of judicial power this year after Huang Songyou, former vice president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), was jailed for life in January for taking bribes and embezzlement.Huang was convicted of taking more than 3.9 million yuan (about 574,000 U.S. dollars) of bribes from 2005 to 2008.Wang said nearly 800 court officials were punished for violating laws last year.Courts at all levels should "learn a lesson" from the case of Huang to pinpoint rooted problems on the management of judges and supervision of power, he said.Prosecutor-General Cao said the authority will "never relax its efforts" in the crackdown on judicial corruption.An extensive anti-gang crackdown in southwestern Chongqing municipality since last year revealed a grave situation of judicial corruption. About 200 judicial and public security officials in the city have been found to be implicated.Wen Qiang, former deputy police chief and head of the justice bureau of Chongqing, stood trial last month. BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military and international relations experts on Wednesday said that a recent Pentagon report playing down Taiwan's aerial combat capability was a front for more advanced arms sales to the island, which would seriously violate a Sino-U.S. agreement that Washington endorsed 28 years ago. "Any further arms sales, especially if the U.S. sells F-16 fighters to Taiwan, would increase already strained tensions with China," Prof. Tan Kaijia with the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army told Xinhua. The report delivered by the Defense Intelligence Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense to the Congress has stressed that many of Taiwan's 400 active combat aircraft were not operationally capable due their age and maintenance problems. It also specified that Taiwan's 60 U.S.-made F-5 fighters have reached the end of their operating life and some of the island's F-16 A/B jet fighters needed improvement to increase combat effectiveness. The Pentagon's report came as Taiwan continued to voice its need for advanced U.S. weaponry such as 66 F-16 C/Ds, a substantial improvement model on Taiwan's current F-16 A/Bs. But the U.S. side excluded the fighters from the latest arms sale package. According to media reports, Taiwan currently operates 60 U.S.-made F-5 fighters, 148 F-16 A/Bs, 56 French-made Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets and 126 locally produced Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF) aircraft. "If the U.S. equips Taiwan with new F-16s, replacing the second-generation F-5s, it would significantly increase the island's aerial combat effectiveness for F-16's compatibility to other U.S.-made weapon systems such as airborne early warning and control aircraft through Link-16 Multifunctional Information Distribution System," said Prof. Tan. According to the Communique jointly issued by the Chinese and U.S. governments on Aug. 17, 1982, the U.S. side states that "its arms sales to Taiwan will not exceed, either in qualitative or in quantitative terms, the level of those supplied in recent years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China." "Comprehensive performance of the F-16s is far beyond that of the F-5s and the qualitative parameters of the F-16 C/Ds also exceed those of the F-16 A/Bs," said Tan. Selling such arms would "be an overt offense" against the Aug. 17 Communique, and promoting such a move by an elaborate report would not give any justification for the U.S. since the F-16 C/Ds would not be considered as a defensive weapon in any case, he said. Guo Zhenyuan, a researcher with the prominent thinktank China Institute of International Studies, told Xinhua that previous U.S. arms sales to Taiwan were covered by the front of "providing Taiwan with arms of a defensive character" to ease the backlash to the bilateral relationship from the Chinese side. "The U.S. side should know that the sooner it stops selling arms to Taiwan, the more willing China would be to work with it on global and regional issues," Prof. Jin Canrong with Renmin University of China said.
