GUANLING, Guizhou, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday gave up searching for more survivors, six days after a rain-triggered landslide buried 99 people in a southwest China village, citing mounting concerns to head off the outbreak of disease as well as the slim chance anyone could have survived after nearly one week.Only 42 bodies have been recovered at the landslide-hit Dazhai Village in Guanling County, Guizhou Province. But rescuers said it was unlikely to find any more survivors six days after the disaster amid the humid and hot weather.Police said they have begun to cremate the bodies after extracting DNA samples. Also, rescuers said life-detecting equipment found no traces of life while 20 excavators failed to uncover any body after turning some 400,000 cubic meters of mud at the site.On Sunday, police cordoned off the site and treated the area with disinfectants to prevent the outbreak of epidemics.Excavators that had been combing the ruins for six days were replaced by trucks carrying bleaching powders, disinfecting materials, and vaccines.Zhu Zhengming, deputy chief of the provincial health bureau, said the medical team faced increasing pressure as viruses and bacteria reproduced faster in the ongoing lingering heat. For the sake of the health and safety of rescue workers, they must leave the site, Zhu said, ordering quarantine personnel to disinfect the ruins every six hours for four times before it is completely sealed off for three months.Meanwhile, the government of Guanling announced on Sunday that families of each victim are entitled to cash compensation of 5,000 yuan and 500 kilograms of rice.8 Wang Mengzhou, the Party chief of Guanling, said a memorial service would be held near Dazhai Village on July 5 -- exactly one week after the landslide engulfed Dazhai and buried 99 local residents.Downpours drenched much of south China in late June, leaving 266 people dead and another 199 missing in eleven provinces, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction said last Friday. Rain-triggered landslides and mud-rock flows were responsible for 80 percent of the casualties.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday announced its decision to provide an additional 50 million RMB yuan (about 7. 37 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies to the Pakistani government as "the latest developments suggest that the flooding in Pakistan may pose an unprecedented humanitarian challenge."The announcement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at a plenary General Assembly session on flood-devastated Pakistan, which entered its second day here on Friday. Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations Li Baodong speaks at the plenary General Assembly session on flood-devastated Pakistan at the UN headquarters in New York, the United States, Aug. 20, 2010. China on Friday announced its decision to provide an additional 50 million RMB yuan (about 7.37 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies to the Pakistani government as "the latest developments suggest that the flooding in Pakistan may pose an unprecedented humanitarian challenge.""The first batch of relief supplies has arrived at the affected areas on Aug. 19, which included 30 tons of food, 1,200 tents, 1, 000 power generators, 23,800 blankets as well as medicine, mineral water and water purification equipment," Li said. "The rest of the relief supplies will be delivered on Aug. 20.""The Chinese government will continue to do what it can to provide assistance to Pakistan in the light of the developments of the disaster," he said.Immediately after the flooding occurred, "China acted promptly to provide humanitarian support and assistance to Pakistan, showing the profound friendship between the Chinese and Pakistani governments and people," he noted.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province. Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province. The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province. However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met Monday with a delegation from the Ethiopian House of Federation, pledging closer links between the two countries on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties.Meeting with the delation led by Speaker Degefi Bula, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), described bilateral ties as an example of friendship between China and African countries.Since the two countries established diplomatic relationship 40 years ago, China and Ethiopia had seen consolidated and progressive friendly cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect and equality, said Wu.The establishment of a comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2003 set the direction for the future development of relations, said Wu.Wu said China was willing to work with Ethiopia to tap cooperative potential and boost traditional friendship.Wu said parliamentary exchanges between the two countries had played positive roles in promoting nation-to-nation relations.Wu urged the two countries to deepen cooperation between special committees and friendly groups within both parliaments in a bid to introduce new energy into China-Ethiopia ties.Degefi expressed his appreciation for China's assistance to African countries, including Ethiopia, saying the Ethiopian government and parliament highly valued relations with China and would learn from China in its economic development, technological progress and national unity.Ethiopia would make joint efforts with China to enhance cooperation in areas like agriculture, science and technology, and infrastructure, said Degefi.
