SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Challenger Middle School teacher Christopher Kelly is the SDCCU classroom hero. Kelly is a fresh face in the teaching world with only four years on the job, but is already making a tremendous impact in his students' lives. Kelly uses a mix of positive reinforcement and entertainment to keep his students engaged in their eighth-grade math class and eager to learn. "I do talk like a talk show host," Christopher Kelly said. "I think it's kinda fun, and I think it keeps them more engaged that way they pay attention more." Kelly became a teacher to create a positive and secure space for kids to learn and grow. "I think that everybody in this world that has been successful has had somebody help them along the way," Kelly said. "I just want to be able to help some people who maybe haven't had that yet." Kelly's attentiveness toward his students is one of the reasons eighth-grader Olivia Toledo wanted to recognize him for his hard work. "When I need help, I know that I can go to him, and he will help me until I get it," Toledo said." He keeps us engaged by telling us to just keep going and never give up." His students and staff say Kelly is a teacher who is making a difference in his students' lives. "When you get recognized in a big way like this, it feels really good; it makes you feel really special," Kelly said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The pomp and circumstance will be virtual this year, but the money incoming Mayor Todd Gloria and the nine City Council members will take home is very real.Starting Thursday, the city will pay its mayor 6,000 a year -- more than double outgoing Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s roughly 1,000 salary.Meanwhile, City Council salaries will jump from ,000 a year to 4,000 overnight. That's a 65 percent raise; it increases to 5,000 on Dec. 10, 2022.The timing may seem odd, given the pandemic's impact on jobs and our economy, and the fact that major city general fund revenues are projected to be about million under budget this fiscal year. But it turns out San Diego voters authorized these pay increases back in 2018 via Measure L, which voters passed with 78 percent approval.In a statement, a spokeswoman for Gloria said he would accept the full salary."Nearly 80 percent of San Diego voters agreed that the adjustments to the salaries of San Diego elected officials was the right thing to do. (AP) -- Starbucks is adding plant-based meat to its U.S. menu for the first time.The Seattle-based coffee chain says a breakfast sandwich made with imitation sausage from California-based Impossible Foods is now available at a majority of its U.S. restaurants. The sandwich comes with egg and cheese and is served on a ciabatta bun.Starbucks said earlier this year it would add plant-based meat to its menus worldwide as part of an effort to reduce its environmental impact.In April, it began selling lasagna, pasta and wraps made with Beyond Meat crumbles in China. San Diego (KGTV)- Starting today, additional background checks are now required for people to buy ammunition. The system roll-out is leaving some store owners frustrated. "It's going to be a lot harder for us to come in and buy ammo," says customer George Garcia. The state law went into effect today, but it wasn't until 7 a.m. that the software went live. "It is frustrating because we had to wait until the day of for the law to go into effect and the system to be in place," says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. "Then we still have to train staff properly." The store must keep a record of the sales for five years. The customer must have California drivers license or ID and pay an additional fee before they can even get their hands on the ammo. "The basic ammunition eligibility check Is a dollar every time you buy. That is for people who have purchased firearms in California before," says Rudolph. "Then there's the standard one, that is . That is for anybody that has not purchased a firearm in California."Some activists believe the new law could save lives. A statement from San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention says in part: "This will help to prevent felons and those with illegal firearms from getting quick and easy access to high quantities of bullets, while allowing responsible gun owners who pass background checks to continue to purchase bullets."They also say the new law will make it harder for those planning mass shootings to stock up on ammunition. 1539
