SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans could see a bit of relief from rising housing prices, according to a Zillow housing report.The report claims that 20 percent of listings in June saw a price cut, compared to only 12 percent of homes that had their prices cut a year ago. Similarly, the increase in home values has slowed, and is expected to see even slower growth over the next year.While the rise in home values has seen a slight decrease, they’re still on the rise. The median price in the county is now 3,700, up 6.6 percent from a year earlier."Now with prices being so high, we decided to move to Arizona where prices are more affordable," said Eric Oster, who rents an apartment in the Kearny Mesa area.Zillow expects that rate of appreciation to decline to 4.7 percent by next year. Still, the cooling home price growth is being offset by higher interest rates, which increases monthly payments. "The key is, if you're going to buy a home, the biggest question is - can I afford the payments, and if you're stretching yourself too thin it doesn't matter what the market's doing," said Bridget Potterton, a San Diego Real Estate Broker.The median home value in the US is currently 7,300. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reported new signs Friday of the potentially dangerous disease tularemia on a trail in Sorrento Valley.Several batches of ticks trapped along Lopez Canyon Trail tested positive for the disease, also known as rabbit fever.The first group of ticks with the disease appeared last week, officials said.County officials posted warning signs for hikers. Vector Control will also expand tick trapping in the area.The best way for people to protect themselves from tick bites include insect repellent for humans and pets, and long-sleeved shirts and pants.Tularemia can be treated with antibiotics but it can be fatal. 679

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed off Thursday on his .3 billion 2020 budget previously approved by the super majority of the city council.The budget funds the largest infrastructure investment in San Diego’s history and includes more funding for homelessness programs, road repairs, tree trimming services and housing reform.Faulconer appeared to be most excited about the expansion of the Clean San Diego initiative, which aims to clear debris from across the city.The mayor announced during his signing ceremony that million will go toward the expansion of the CSD program, and more crews will be hired to clean up areas citywide 24 hours a day, seven days a week.“We’re restoring pride back in our neighborhoods with every cleanup job, and now we’re investing more resources into ‘Clean SD’ so we can do even more for our communities,” said Faulconer.Funding for the program was more than doubled from Fiscal Year 2019 after Faulconer requested an additional .5 million for its budget.Since the program started in May 2017, more than 3,600 tons of debris have been removed from neighborhoods, canyons, and the San Diego River.Other efforts in the program include an increase in street sweeping in the East Village, sanitizing sidewalks, and graffiti removal. 1302
