CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - For the first time, a local coaching legend is speaking out, 5 months after he was banned from the campus of Coronado High.Retired water polo coach Randy Burgess is accused in a complaint of molesting a former middle school student.A mural of Burgess remains over the pool his water polo teams has used during his 3 decades of coaching, which includes nearly 20 section championships for high school boys' and girls' teams. Three of his players have competed in the Olympics.It's a legacy now in danger."My feeling is beyond frustration. A lot of hurtful things have happened," said Burgess.In May, the former middle school student - now 18 - filed a complaint with Coronado unified.In it, the teen claims during the 7th grade while playing for a club polo team that shared the pool with Burgess' teams, Burgess hugged, kissed, and eventually raped the child, in places like bathrooms and Burgess' car.The school district removed Burgess from the classroom in April, before denying the claim in May.Burgess says his attorney learned the District Attorney's office has declined to prosecute, but 10News is still working to confirm that."My immediate response was this was a case of mistaken identity.  My coaching and teaching career never paralleled with this this individual," said Burgess, who denies ever interacting with the student.Burgess tell us he doesn't know why someone would make up such a claim. He's now suing for reinstatement to teach physical education at Coronado High. In 2015, he retired from coaching, but was still mentoring coaches."I've told my children and my athletes: It's not always what happens to you, but how you handle it. I'm trying to live through those words now," said Burgess.It's not the first time Burgess has been named in a complaint.In 1995, a city supervisor sued him and the city of Coronado, claiming Burgess berated his players, made sexually inappropriate statements in front of students and sometimes allowed male swimmers to swim naked.Burgess says that case was settled with a confidentiality clause."I can only repeat to myself that the people who know me, know me, and the others will come up with their own conclusions," said Burgess.In a statement, Coronado Unified declined to discuss personnel matters, but did say "...the District takes such claims very seriously.  When the allegations became known, the District followed policy and protocol by taking immediate action to protect the safety and security of District students and staff ..."10News reached out to the lawyers representing the former student but have yet to hear back. 2638

New York-based Colgate-Palmolive say it's reviewing its Darlie toothpaste brand, which is popular in Asia. Prior to 1989, the brand was known as Darkie and featured a singer in blackface as its logo. New Jersey-based B&G Foods, which makes Cream of Wheat hot cereal, said it’s reviewing its logo, which features a smiling black chef holding a bowl of cereal. Cream of Wheat's packaging includes an image of a black chef. In early advertisements, copy refers to the chef as "Rastus" — a term now considered a slur. The name refers to a minstrel show caricature of a stereotypically happy black man. Uncle Ben's rice, which also uses a black man's portrait on its packaging, said it planned to "evolve" the brand, but did not offer specifics.And Chicago-based Conagra Brands says its female-shaped Mrs. Butterworth's bottles are intended to evoke a “loving grandmother.” But the company said the packaging could be misinterpreted. "We stand in solidarity with our Black and Brown communities and we can see that our packaging may be interpreted in a way that is wholly inconsistent with our values," the company said in a statement. CINCINNATI — Linda Zgoda has been volunteering at Hamilton County polling places for more than 20 years. She said it's important to her."I feel like to have honest elections, you have to have good officials," Zgoda said. "I feel like it's a civic responsibility for people to work at the polls."She pays close attention to details."It was initially when we had the signature poll book that I became aware that my neighbor was still on the rolls," she said. "Then after it had been on for so long, I became curious about it."The curious thing, in this case, was the fact that her neighbor had been dead for 14 years."I'm concerned that by someone being on the rolls, someone could improperly vote in their name," Zgoda said.She contacted the Hamilton County Board of Elections and was told a family member needed to turn in her neighbor's death certificate to have that person removed."Since this has been brought to our attention, we did more research, and we've been able to obtain some more identifying information, and that person has now been canceled," Hamilton County Board of Elections director Sherry Poland said.Poland said the state and county usually do a more thorough job of removing deceased voters from the rolls, but this time was different."We did receive a deceased Ohioans report at that time (in 2004), and (it) included his name but didn't include his address," Poland said. "The report did have a date of birth, but we didn't have a date of birth on file."Poland said her office has about 790 Hamilton County voters who don't have their date of birth or identification on file because those people registered at a time when they didn't have to give that information.When asked if there might be more deceased voters on the rolls that the state might have missed, Poland said that she thought it was highly unlikely because more identifying information is required from voters now.She said that no one tried to vote under the name of Linda Zgoda's deceased neighbor in the time that it had incorrectly been listed on the rolls.The Hamilton County Board of Elections is working to get more identifying information from all voters in the county, she added. 2198

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Zoo and the owner of a local canoeing business helped rescue more than 50,000 honeybees thought to have been living in a garage since the early 1990s.The bees were about 2 miles from the zoo, in Avondale. Experts think the bees had been colonizing a garage wall for 25 years, entering and leaving through a small hole near a window.That long time period might explain the colony's large number: Honeybees typically live about three to four weeks, while the queen lives three to five years.Dirk Morgan, owner of Morgan's Canoe and Morgan's Natural Buzz Honey, used a specialized vacuum to safely suck up the bees for transport. The vacuum has a weak air flow, just enough to draw in the honeybees but not so strong they'd be harmed.He also carefully cut out the brood -- which has all the young, eggs and larvae -- and put it into a new hive. That's so the bees won't have a reason to return to the garage."When these bees end up at the zoo, they'll have a home where they'll be taken care of, we can use them for education, put them in an observation hive to show kids the miracle of a bee being born," Morgan said.Rather than reaching for bug spray, experts hope you'll call someone to have honeybees rescued if you find them on your property. Kari Bruskotter, member of the Butler County Beekeepers Association, said it's a win-win for professional beekeepers to remove a swarm: You get the hive out of your space at little to no cost, and they get "free bees."Although rates of colony collapse disorder, which devastated the global population of honeybees at the turn of the century, are declining, Bruskotter said, their numbers still haven't recovered. Exterminating bees in your space further reduces the population -- which, in turn, drives up the price of bees when keepers like Bruskotter try to purchase them.Finding them a new home, on the other hand, helps everyone."You get them out of your house and you get the satisfaction of knowing you're contributing to keeping our bees healthy," Bruskotter said. "Pollinators are required for a lot of the fruits and vegetables we eat; your plate gets very boring if we don't have natural pollinators around." 2214

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - After seven long months of dealing with the pandemic, it's easy to assume that the general population is growing tired of COVID-19. The mental strain has been non-stop and now seasonal depression is expected to add to those stresses."There is one word that I would say now, it is fatigue,” said Douglas County Health Director Adi Pour about how people are feeling regarding the pandemic. “There is no question, the public is fatigued."Mental health experts worry that seasonal depression will only add to the already prevalent pandemic-related stresses."It just multiplies it, it stacks,” said CHI Health Mental Health Therapist Tim Hron.Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, has to do with changes in serotonin levels in the colder months, directly affecting your mood. It's a condition that affects about five percent of adults in the U.S. and typically lasts about 40 percent of the year."It can present itself with fatigue, depressed mood, some of those other typical symptoms of depression but just more in that seasonal time frame," said Hron.Hron also says it's important to reach out for help if your symptoms last longer than two weeks.
