SHENYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China mobilized helicopters for the first time in a highway medical rescue drill in northeast China' s Liaoning Province, the provincial bureau of transport said Thursday.The rescue drill took place at 10 a.m. on the Shenyang-Dalian highway where a bridge collapse and traffic pile-up purportedly injuring dozens was simulated.Two helicopters, an S-76 from China' s Ministry of Transport and an Mi-17 from Shenyang Military Command, were dispatched to rescue those acting as wounded in the blocked section inaccessible to rescue vehicles.The rescue workers were airlifted to the crash site and successfully extricated two "trapped" bus passengers within three minutes before transporting them to nearby hospitals.More than 300 people participated in the drill organized by China' s Ministry of Transport and the provincial government of Liaoning.

LUOYANG, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed economic restructuring, agricultural production and the role of grass-root party organizations during his visit to the city of Luoyang in central Henan province.Hu visited state-owned enterprises, research institutes and talked with local farmers during this trip from Friday through Sunday.At Citic Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., the largest manufacturer of mining machinery in China, Hu learned that the company had shifted focus from manufacturing to research and development. He said innovation is the lifeblood of a company.He also visited a tractor manufacturing plant and a bearing producing company, both enjoying rapid growth thanks to restructuring. Hu asked officials at the two companies to continue with their restructuring and their ongoing expansion through innovation.Hu also visited two research institutes. At China Aviation Lithium Battery Research and Development Center, Hu asked the center to seize the opportunity as the new energy industry is booming and the market demand for lithium batteries is expanding.At another research institute, Hu stressed the role of talent in scientific and technological research.Hu also urged the province to to do a good job in agricultural production this year, as Henan contributes the largest share of crops in China.Hu urged village-level party organizations to serve the interests of farmers while visiting a local village.Hu visited farmers at a corn field and asked about the yields and price of corn. Hu told farmers that supporting grain production is a long-term policy and the state will again boost such support in the future so farmers can earn more and increase their wealth by planting grain.Hu said China would continue to give priority to the development of rural areas, agriculture and farmers during the 12th five year plan, China's development blueprint for the next five years.Hu noted that China's grain yields have increased for 6 consecutive years, and this year the summer yield of grain is another good harvest, despite earlier bad weather.Hu said, however, that Henan, as China's bowl of grain, should take on the responsibility to safeguard the nation's food security and enhance its agricultural production capacity.While visiting a local village, Zhouli village of Mengjin county, Hu requested village-level party organizations to work for the interests of farmers.Hu added that the party organization plays a critical role in improving the standards of living for farmers.Zhouli village was relocated to its present site to make way for a water conservation project in the Yellow River in 1995. Since then, the per capita annual income of local farmers rose from 680 yuan (100 U.S.Dollar) to its current 4,950 yuan now, and farmers now have access to running water, cable TV as well as other public services.Hu said the government would continue providing favorable policies to farmers so they might lead better lives.At the end of his visit, Hu urged continuing efforts to transform the economic growth pattern, adjust the economic structure, increase the amount of indigenous innovation, continue to promote energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection as well as reform and opening up.

PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. Greece is one of the countries with biggest commercial fleets.The Chinese envoy added that the Greek government and Greek Navy attach great importance to the visit by the Chinese naval fleet. TORONTO, Canada, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao laid out on Sunday a three-point proposal for promoting a strong, sustainable and balanced global economic growth, calling for joint efforts of the international community for global economic recovery.While addressing the fourth G20 summit in Toronto, Hu said in his speech titled "Work in Unity for the Future" that the world economy is gradually recovering with the help of the concerted efforts of G20 members and the entire international community.However, he warned that the recovery was unfirmly established, unbalanced, and still facing "quite many uncertainties," such as the expanding sovereign debt crisis, drastic exchange rates fluctuations of major currencies and persistent volatility in the international financial markets.Seeking to address these problems and materialize a strong and balanced growth worldwide, Hu laid out a three-point proposal."First, we need to turn the G20 from an effective mechanism to counter the international financial crisis to a premier platform for advancing international economic cooperation," said the Chinese president."The complex world economic situation makes it necessary for the G20 to play a guiding role. We need to take a longer-term perspective and shift the focus of the G20 from coordinating stimulus measures to coordinating growth, from addressing short-term contingencies to promoting long-term governance and from passive response to proactive planning," he said.

HARARE, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe said on Friday Zimbabwe's stone sculpture on exhibition at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo has particularly proved popular among Chinese visitors.Assistant curator Thomas Pasirai who recently went to Shanghai as an expert to help set up Zimbabwe's exhibition in the African pavilion, told Xinhua in an interview that the Chinese were fascinated by Zimbabwe's stone works."The Zimbabwean pavilion is fantastic and the Chinese are very excited about our pavilion to the extent that we have got some Chinese who are being photographed with some of the life-size stone works while others get excited to the extent of kissing the works," Pasirai said.He said Zimbabwe was in a unique position in that it was one of the few countries that produce stone sculpture different from other African countries."Other African countries do wood work and other materials but with us it is that stone sculpture which is particularly exciting the Chinese," he said.The National Art Gallery shipped about 80 pieces of stone carvings that are on display at the Shanghai Expo. These were sourced from various artists and different studios in the country, Pasirai said.Other products being marketed include basketry, wooden drums and stools.Organizations such as the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority are also exhibiting."By the end of this month we will be having exhibitions like trophies and stuffed animals," he said.Pasirai said Zimbabwe's pavilion was exceptionally designed according to the Great Zimbabwe, the amazing ancient ruins from which Zimbabwe derive its name. The ruins, in scripted in 1986 as the UNESCO World Heritage site, is among Zimbabwe's great tourist attractions.The other side of the pavilion shows the mighty Victoria Falls while the other shows pictures of flora and fauna and the different projects being undertaken in Zimbabwe to improve the lives of communities, Pasirai said.He said Zimbabwe was highlighting these projects in keeping with the theme of the Expo, which is "Better City, Better Life" from where Zimbabwe has adapted its theme "Transforming our Communities for A better Life"."We are doing this to enable the Chinese to understand us more. We want them to understand that Zimbabwe is a beautiful nation where they can enjoy the flora and fauna."Zimbabwe is sharing exhibition space with other African countries in the African pavilion where it is neighbors with Zambia and Uganda.There is also a selling bazaar where exhibitors from different African countries are selling their wares.Pasirai commended China for the excellent way it had created the Expo, noting that China's design culture was very advanced.China's promotion of the green environment and the general hygiene on the streets also caught Pasirai's eye who hoped Zimbabweans will emulate some of the hygienic standards in the Asian country."The Chinese do have a culture of management of waste from an individual perspective and I hope our people will learn from them, "he said.Zimbabwe will send about 60 small and medium enterprises to exhibit at the Expo which started in May and ends in October this year. The entrepreneurs will go in batches of 10 per month.More than 200 countries and up to 80 million visitors are expected to descend on Shanghai for the six-month exposition, and Zimbabwe will get a chance on August 11- a national day set for it- to showcase its economic, tourism and business potential to the world.Each participating country will have a day set aside for it to market itself to the outside world.Apart from marketing various products, Zimbabwe has said it will take the Expo as an image building opportunity after years of negative publicity from the Western media.
